Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Add me to the list of dissatisfied iPhone 3G 3.1 "upgrade" customers. My phone goes into coma mode about once a day, though it has sometimes happened more than once a day. I never know when it will happen, it just does. Tried all the solutions on here short of downgrading, but since I'm out of warranty I haven't even bothered taking it to an Apple store so I can be treated like a fool by some snot nosed "Genius" and accused of causing the problem myself.

I'm biding my time til my contract is up, and then considering a switch to an Android phone. If Apple doesn't make this right soon I'm never buying another Apple product as long as I live, and will advise my friends and family to do the same. This is very poor customer service.

My iPhone is having the same issue. Since updating to 3.1 and getting the AT&T MMS update (I did both on the same day) it's been turning off randomly. The only way to turn the phone back on is to hold both buttons for 10 seconds until the apple icon shows up. This issue is extremely annoying and I've missed calls and texts because of it. I've tried restoring the phone multiple times to try and resolve the issue, but the bug persists. I'd like to see an update to resolve this bug.

Im with you MacGyver..if Apple does make this right soon (by the end of the week, its already been > one month) I will never buy another Apple product again and I will also advise my family and friends (who rely on me for this type of advice) never to buy one of their products either. There is no excuse for their absolutley horrible customer service.

My friend's 3G has been doing this. Her phone is out of warranty. She took it back to the Apple store, they verified she had tried a restore, and then gave her a replacement 3G phone. It has gone into a coma one time since then. She has experienced a few dropped calls, and some texting that wouldn't go until she rebooted. However, it's much more stable than it was. Don't let the warranty issue keep you from going the Apple store - I think lots of people have been exchanging them.

Here is some bad news again: unfortunately my reported miraculous raise out of mysterious random total shutdowns and coma's did not last long... its back again!

Thought so, its definitely a bug in 3.1 and I am sick of it. My iPhone turned into a very unreliable piece of **** that makes me look like a fool. When I met this nice person last weekend it took me over a minute to get her number in my iPhone as it had to come out of another coma. Ahum.. Apple, thats NOT cool!

Apple please! What are you doing on this mater? Are you in fact working on it? It is absolutely and totally amazing not great nor cool to have your customers struggle in the dark.

Is it THAT hard for Apple to announce a scheduled release of 3.1.1. or 3.2? Is the problem THAT hard to determine? So why not back to 3.0.1? Why is iTunes blocking that? Whats going on Apple!!???

This is really starting to **** me the f off. I can't go one day without my phone going into a comatose mode at least 5 times. There's a 50% chance that every time I put my phone to sleep, it's not waking back up without a hard reset.

How long is Apple gonna make me wait have a decent working phone again? You would think that this would be a huge red flag for them and that they would try to fix this ASAP.

APPLE wants you to buy there new 3GS phone.... end of story, its clearly obvious that its happening to the majority of 3g phones and its just in time for the 3gs..

dirty marketing tactics? call me paranoid, but it just maybe the case! lol

(apple) sit in silence for a while and wait for people to upgrade to 3gs... then fix the problem when sales die down. lol

Well I am happy to see this thread, I guess I'm late to the party... My phone has been doing the same thing for about a week now, since I updated.. Never had 1 problem with this thing before.. I am hoping they resolve this soon, I am very surprised to see no resolution yet. I still love my phone, but this sure is a pain in the ***. Glad I saved my first ever post for this

If you want action, take ten minutes out of your life and start writing a letter!

To submit a story idea to one of the ABC News shows listed below, write a single page letter including your name, phone number, and address. Include photocopies of backup information. On the outside of the envelope, write "Story Idea." If a producer is interested in your story, he/she will contact you. Here are the show addresses:

If you are having major problems, take my advice and go to the Apple Store and have them look at it, probably best to take it when it is down, as you can walk-in and they can get you to see a tech guy on site and they are really cool.

That 3GS conspiracy is nonsense - if your 2 year contract is not up yet , you can't upgrade!

I just got back from the Apple store and they took care of the problem - my phone has been down for over a day, so they replaced the phone and all is working well (On 3.0.1) . They were pleasant to work with, but they don't know the exact cause of the problem either. They do know there is definitely a 3.1 problem as the main thing you have to tell them is you upgraded and your phone is messed up.

Personally, I dont think all these turning off of this, turning on that is helping, i think it has something deep down in the OS that is messing with the battery and/or temperature stuff.

After my visit to the Apple Store, I am VERY happy with Apple's customer service!! Of course, still not happy with the 3.1 OS , not going to touch that as my replacement phone is on 3.0.1

    Good Luck all

We can add another person to this list. I am one of the unfortunate ones that this is happening to.

Funny thing is, I updated to 3.1 when it first came out, and, the "Random Shut Downs" didn't happen at first. It seems that within the past 2 weeks, it's happening more and more.

Last week, it even happened a few times in the same day.

I dunno. I hope they fix it
