Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

No offense to anybody here, but to those that think an upgrade to iphone 3Gs is a practical solution, Have you not been paying attention?!?!
If this is the crap we can expect when a new model is out, when the 3GT-new-ehanced is out and your 3GS 3.whatever upgrade at the time is broken, do you plan on paying extra to upgrade to the latest and greatest?
Pardon me, but if I buy a 2008 honda and the thing has problems and the dealer says "we could fix it, but why don't you buy 2009 honda instead". I'm heading to toyota. Not going near the honda. Same with this, if they don't fix 3.1, there aint no way I'm going near another Apple phone.

Both models (3G & 3GS) have been commented on as having this problem which is reasonable given the same firmware is used on both models. So the upgrade conspiracy is looking a bit thin, especially as Apple are still selling both models. So the only advice is to keep reporting your issues here and at the Apple feedback page (bug report) and then wait until the fix is released, although its been a long wait for this one!

Me too... I was wondering whether going back to 3.0 is a good option? I don't dare to restore because of backup issues that I wrote about elsewhere in this forum.

I don't know what to do, Because I downloaded all my apps on my phone and not through Itunes can I get them back? will a back up work? I mean what does a restore actually do? in terms of what it is doing?

they have been suggesting to restore to NEW....which wipes it all out...back up your photos and files FIRST...(non itunes backed up stuff).

I have done three of these....

Makes no difference.....works better for a day...then coma

I have also ran Edge...still coma....

I have also chanted...held a voodoo fire pit dance....and spoken kindly to the iphone for the last 24 hours.....no change.

Apple has really screwed over the consumer on this one. I hope someone actually exposes the issue in the media.

The denial....run around....swap out to a new phone only to go coma hours later....not introduce a quick update that at the VERY least allows for a 3.01 downgrade automatically......and on and on and on.

I love this dam device but it appears that Apple can no longer meet expectation of support. They do not understand telephony 101.....and that is "99.999% reliability....dial tone just happens....no one cares how or why...and for that matter email/push has entered the same level of expectations. But you do not have to even consider losing email.....or web....its all of the lost PHONE CALLS which for business users...are linked to REVENUE...IN A DAM RECESSION which is hard enough already.....and Apple has really screwed the pooch!

You will find most mac/apple related media do not criticise Apple. As a consumer with a product that has not been fit for purpose since the 9th September 3.1 release I will continue to complain until it is resolved and have a good think about the impact this has when I consider my next phone purchase. The iphone might have been unique when first launched but many other products are now equal or better in some areas (cheapest Nokia performs better as a phone).

Here is another log on the fire! ATT reps say that they are NOT aware of any problems with this and are shocked that I have any mention of this...... they sure have some gall as they have the same phone as we do, I wonder is they were told to keep quite about this?

Apple is acknowledging the issue. I just spoke to them and the rep was open about the fact there is a known issue. That helps a little. (very little) Nothing more frustrating than when they play dumb. Hopefully the fix is coming soon.....

I've turned off my Exchange email and Auto-lock and I haven't had any shutdowns since.

I can't get work email on my phone now, though. But I'm almost wondering if that's for the best.

Just wanted to share my disgust with the 3.1 update. This is the only Apple product I own and is discouraging me from ever buying another one.

Mine finally went into coma/zombie zone after being ok for a few days...ugh. Hope this gets fixed soon. how annoying.

Reset my network setting this time and now it works.

There is another thread going (not as many pages as this one) with the same problems:

I'm curious, if you go to Settings-Safari do you have fraud warning enabled?

I didn't think to turn off some of the indexing features. I've heard that fraud warning runs in the background when the phone is asleep, but it would also make sense that some indexing might be going on too. Thanks for the tip, keep us informed of how it goes!
