Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

    This is straight from 3.1.2.....

    iPhone OS 3.1.2 Software Update

This update contains bug fixes and improvements, including the following:

    • *Resolves sporadic issue that may cause iPhone to not*
    *wake from sleep*

Totally agree, usual thing, "my phone is ok...", never heard of that problem, its needs to be reset (again), its your bad phone please replace etc etc...

I loved the one from the apple "genius" where he told the customer that it was a loose wire! Its in one of the earlier pages in this thread. This just proves that these so called genius/support people have as much knowledge about product failures as most people here.

The reason why people post issues about defects here is that they have an issue not that they have imagined it!

I just installed 3.1.2 at 1PM PDT. The firmware and carrier upgrade installation went smoothly and the iPhone rebooted, but I did notice the Silver Apple logo stays on longer now before the phone restarts.

*However, 3.1.2 has not proved to resolve any of my 3G networking connectivity issues in Northern California.* Comments:

    I turned 3G ON (Settings > General > Network > Enable 3G > ON)
    I turned Wi-Fi OFF to test 3G data connectivity (Settings > Wi-Fi > OFF)

    *NO 3G Connectivity indication.*

I manually rebooted iPhone (Held Top/Home button for 7 seconds until Silver logo appeared)

    *Still NO 3G Connectivity indication.*

I reset Network Settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings) which caused another reboot.

    *Still NO 3G Connectivity indication.*

    I turned 3G OFF (Settings > General > Network > Enable 3G > OFF)

*"E" indicator returns. Phone returns to normal operating functionality (data access now available)*

    I turned Wi-Fi back ON (Settings > Wi-Fi > ON)

*Wi-Fi indicator returns. Phone remains normal (data access remains available)*

I'll keep experimenting but I've noticed no difference with my iPhone in my 3G network in Northern California. *I'm staying on EDGE for now.*

I put in a support request and an Apple person contacted me. He asked me a bunch of questions about when it happened, etc. He said he was having the same issue with his own iPhone. He finally said Apple had no clue what was going on! It used to be only every couple of days or so. Yesterday I think I had to reboot 4 times! Twice so far today!

Just like everyone else on this subject. Phone kept putting it's feet in the air and blacking out after 3.1 update. Genius did a wonderful PR job and rebuilt the phone and wished me well (should have gone to Specsavers and looked up this site. Would have saved him a lot of time and bother if he just told me it was a bug).

well I had charged my phone up to 100% when I heard of the update; did it and all seemed to go fine. But noticed it SUCKED my battery down horribly fast. I'd say within the first 45 mins it went from 100% to 83% Never did that before. Haven't had any 'coma's' as of yet

The 3.1 made my life a mess and I did a roll back to 3.0.1 a couple of days ago and my iPhone is now reliable again. I will wait a couple of weeks before updating. Since my trust for Apple went out the window during this issue and not acknowledge the problem officially I'm not that convinced that this update is completely OK.
I'm just awaiting response from the daring which already updated your phone (or are about to do so).

Amazing! It's taken Apple a month to release an update for a problem that, according to them, doesn't actually exist!

Somehow this 3.1.2 update is going to fix the water damaged phones with the loose wires, faulty internet connections that caused wonky firmware installs, and corrupt backups!

    Seems perfectly reasonable to me!

I hope that 3.1.2 has solved most people's problems. Unfortunately it hasn't sorted mine. I updated and within a couple of minutes my phone went from 4 bars signal strength to " No Service" without the phone moving an inch. When I try to reboot the phone I just get the USB cable and a message telling me to restore. Nice one Apple, but you really need to try harder.

Anyone who tried the 3.1.2 update please report the version, carrier, and modem firmware numbers since the update. Found in settings; general; about.

I still think the issue is the modem firmware 05.11.07, which is left unchanged in 3.1.2. Think I'll stay on 3.0.1.
