Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I did the firmware update to 3.1.2 (7D11) about 6 hours ago with no problems (update did take a while) but other then that it went smooth & I have all functions back at normal 3g speeds. I haven't noticed any battery drain in fact I'm still at 100% since this morning. I notice web browsing hangs a little, if you picture the progress bar it zooms to about 10% progress then hangs & then zooms to like 60% open & then hangs & then completely opens up. I could be wrong but I don't remember it doing that before. Anyway, those few things are just "chicken $hit" stuff compared to the real problems we had with 3.1 so I'm happy with what I've got now.

The GPS blue dot is 6 feet from where I'm sitting. Hasn't done that since we bought our Iphones. And I'm inside a windowless room.

I still think the issue is the modem firmware 05.11.07, which is left unchanged in 3.1.2. Think I'll stay on 3.0.1.

I wouldn't reject 3.1.2 based upon the 05.11.07 modem firmware. I was one of the ones that saw the comas and downgraded to 3.0.1 (which leaves the modem firmware alone.) I can confirm from this that it is not the modem firmware that is a problem. One weekend I didn't reboot between Friday 8am and Monday 8am and can confirm that even with 5.11.07 modem firmware, the phone stays connected to the network properly (phone calls ring and don't go to voicemail.)

I was experiencing this issue once or twice a day, without any of the WiFi or Network issues.

Updated then synced some App updates as well, no sign of any problems so far.

Glad Apple issued a patch update, but sad I can't install it while travelling for next 2 weeks.

I really wish they would test the firmware more extensively prior to publishing it.

go to a kinko's :-D (and use one of their macs in 'guest' mode).

(if you don't need your photos and music, that is). i think backup will save your contacts n calendar (or in my case... better: mobile me).

I'm about to 'bite the bullet'; my friend from madison just went to install on 3.12 on his 3G and it crashed 1/2 way through the install made an iPaperWeight out of his phone...

fortunately he had another mac in the house, and 2nd attempt in a new user on a different computer worked... he lost all his applications though (semi his fault for never syncing).

My 'magic phone' that started working did have another coma about an hour ago (only two in 4 days), but i'll put on 3.12 because i want to get my phone back to normal (apps and data!).

    wish me luck.

hopefully it will be 'in memorandum' but i still want to get people to sign my petition to get some demographics and some sense of an idea how many people were bugged by this issue (for a whole month).

check out the search page; it was about 12,000 this morning, 14,000 tonight.

No problems since updating to 3.1.2 this morning. Turned all my settings back to normal. 3G on (off had prevented hangs in 3.1, at least for me) Turned the auto lock back on. No crashes/hangs, or loss of cellular connectivity. That had been my primary problem. Not being able to text or call in/out. Only had the hang/coma problem once or twice. But regardless, its back to normal.

about 90 minutes in... still restoring from backup; yikes.

no hiccups with 3.12 though.. unlike my buddy. FW update went smooth; restart than carrier update and another restart.. probably been doing the restore from backup for a bit over an hour. OUCH and i still have another hour or more to restore pictures and music to look forward to!

what was apple thinking of when it dropped firewire for the inferior usb!?

oh yeah.. $ (bean counters win again)

Same here, I updated to latest firmware about a week ago with no problems. However, shortly after I had latency issues & an occassional shutdown. Today it has been horrible!

Apple has released an Update that is downloadable today which suggests it will fix the problem. I have updated. We will see what happens.

    djhaloeight, are you serious?

+Only had the hang/coma problem once or twice. But regardless, its back to normal.+

If this is the case, then it is not fixed.

I notice that quite a few people have mention updating the carrier software - how do you do this? Is it not done automatically when you update the iPhone firmware?

Its an AT&T carrier update, so US only. As far as I know O2 have not issued one. It would appear in itunes just like a firmware update. Usually only for unique network settings for SIM such as MMS settings or similar.
