Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I have the same problem. I had no idea what was wrong until I checked the forums. I updated on Friday and today it crashed, a hard reset is all that worked to bring it back to life.

Ok so I went to Genius bar 2 weeks ago where I learned that my iPhone 3G had water damage so they could not do anything. Now this same problem is happening to me after I updated to 3.1, so Apple should honor that glitch in the firmware and replace my 3G right?

Updated on Wednesday night. One shut down Thursday afternoon. Two shut downs Friday. FIVE!!!! Saturday and as of today I am up to shut down number SEVEN. I've had to do a hard reset each time. This is getting to be a bit annoying.

I doubt changing the hardware will help any since I've seen reports from 3GS users as well, it points to software rather than hardware at this time.

Another one to add to the list.
    16gig 3G phone
Like others, I've been trying to find any sort of pattern for two days now.

Only thing so far is it hasn't locked up when connected to my PC (was trying to see any errors with the iphone config utility at the time of lock up) but of course it won't lock up when I'm watching it....
I did a restore, etc. and it's still locking up
And, like a few others here, it's my primary phone (no land line) so I've had to leave it hooked up to my computer when I'm home to keep it alive and not miss calls. So far that's worked but is a major pain.

I had the same problem. Had no issues for a whole day, then the next day I got the problem you read about in this thread. I was wondered if maybe the file iTunes had downloaded was corrupted so I downloaded a .ipsw I read about in this thread:

So far so good! Tomorrow will be the true test. I am putting my guess as that a lot of us got corrupted firmware during the crush to get the latest and greatest.

I thought too that my iPhone 3G was noticeably warmer but was not sure if I was imagining it due to paying more attention to it's state due to so many problems.

Very unlikely to be a corrupt firmware file as the file itself would have been validated against a checksum when we updated the iPhone - a corrupt file would have refused to install and would have thrown up an error.

That being said, I restored my phone on a different computer, running a different operating system with a fresh firmware file and the issue still occurs for me.

Interestingly the only thing so far that has caused my 3G to not lock up or randomly shutdown is to leave it plugged into either mains supply or USB. Which makes you wonder if indeed somehow it is battery power monitoring related.

Clearly this is totally useless since it is a 'mobile' device and not a stay on mains all the time making it useless as a mobile device. But I wanted to mention that so far it has not locked or crashed since being attached to power for over 9 hours now.

Forgot to add that whilst being plugged in all the user interaction lag totally disappeared thus far and it is very responsive again.

My only other theory is over heating causing the lock-up and shutdown, which would also point to something causing the CPU to loop it's self to oblivion since I noticed the heat when doing something that requires a lot of number crunching like games previously, but it is not as if the heat is so hot that you'd think it was any warmer than say a warm hand around the device. (not heat like my MacBook Pro for example that is clearly hot).

Let me remind you that the md5sums on the update I got from Apple and the update that you are using are identical. Therefore, if anything, re-running the update may be what is benefiting you. Some weird, silent, inconsistent error when installing the firmware, could better explain why everyone with a 3G running 3.1 isn't experiencing this problem, though I don't think that's what it is.

Has your phone been docked/plugged in a lot lately? I've never seen this problem when the phone is plugged in, and further more, I've never seen anyone report the problem during that time.

Also, FWIW, my phone seems to be getting more stable (but it's also been in the charger a bit more often... but I mean, no crashes since Friday night.
