Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

3.1.2 seems to have solved the coma problem. My iPhone is working fine again.

Still I am flabbergasted Apple did not announce an anticipated release date. If one cannot issue an official delivery date its very common to issue a scheduled date. It is absolutely necessary to keep your customers informed about developments, moreover if problems are being reported by them.

In case Apple wants to be taken seriously by the business market proper information regarding scheduled maintenance (if you may call it) is common and essential. Personally I do not see any reason why Apple should not publish a schedule with anticipated OS updates for like a year or so.

I do not expect fixed dates; "scheduled or earlier than" would be just fine.

Good News My iPhone is Working!!!
    I upgraded to 3.1.2 @ 4:30am EDT & my phone hasn't coma once!
I know it's a little early to call it a cure but so far MOST EXCELLENT!
I'm just glad to have my "old iPhone" back! I can't believe I'm going to say this,
THANKS APPLE (they didn' pay me, I'm just happy to have my phone back)

Hey folks - things happen. Apple messed up here. Obviously there was a lack of testing before release of the latest OS. It sucked - no doubt. However, Apple's track record is pretty darn good overall especially compared to the competition. It's water under the bridge for me...just happy my phone is working again.

I think djhaloeight was saying he had only a couple of comas before 3.1.2, and the main symptom was the loss of network connectivity. I used to have 4 or 5 a day, but have had zero since upgrading to 3.1.2.

Updated to 3.1.2 last evening and haven't had a problem with losing connectivity or the phone going into a 'coma' since updating. This patch appears to have fixed my issue! YEA!

Did 3.1.2 not fix anyone elses random shut down issues? I updated at noon yesterday and everything was fine until 7pm when it randomly shut down and acting like it was before the update. I plugged in my phone this morning to itunes to try and restore and now it's just a blank white screen! It's actually worse than before I ran 3.1.2. Anyone else having this issue?

I am not jumping to 3.1.2 yet ..... can anyone confirm that internet tethering continues to be disabled on 3.1.2 as it was for 3.1.1 ...... i think my 3.0.1 with mms and intern tethering still seems to be a tried n tested platform .... 3.1.2 better prove itself before I give up tethering

I updated to 3.1.2 and have not had any comas since...also I did get a new phone yesterday and hadn't experienced any comas with the new phone prior to updating, but that was probably only 3-4 hours before the update. I am happy that Apple put this update out and said that it resolves the coma issue, but working in the IT field I would like to see some detailed notes on what exactly the issue was. Also, I hope going forward they are more cautious before rolling updates out to the masses...I know I certainly will before updating. I know coming from a Windows world I am always the first to test out new OS's, new updates (sp's, patches, etc) but always have backup machines just in case. With my iPhone I have had the impression from all the Apple fanboys and girls and all the media press and advertisements that Apple is spot on when it comes to their OS's and their updates, but this taught me a valuable lesson even dealing with Apple. I guess after having an iPhone since gen1, I was excited for MMS, you know that new feature...lol, so I rushed out and got bit by the 3.1 bug. Oh well, my image definitely has changed for Apple, but for now I will stick with my iPhone...but will be more open to switching down the road if this happens again. I can deal with a bug here and there, but please next time at least acknowledge there is a problem and please make sure company wide the same information is being communicated to your customers as this was just a mess.

The mysterious random total shut downs have ceased since I upgraded to 3.1.2 last night! No more battery malfunctions. No more waking up in the night with a sizzling hot iPhone against my leg. No more coma. The phone seems to be slightly faster as well. This was a positive and necessary update.

well.. i had two coma's in the past 6 days after my accidental upgrade from 3.01 which other than the comas it worked better than it ever had.. oh by the way my petition is online at iPaperWeight.info so hope some people can sign in and get some sense of how many have been dealing with this bug.

Sad to say... that less than 10 hours into 3.1.2, my phone is behaving worse than 3.1 last night.. lots of stutters; while typing an sms, a random 5 second pause before i can continue... repeatedly.. it took me over a minute to compose a 7 word sms.

    see my video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45ky4mAYM5M&feature=player_embedded

whoa; ok the freakiest thing i've EVER seen on an iPHone just happened.

I was tapping an email when for a tiny fraction of a second the boot screen with the large apple appeared.. i wasn't sure exactly what it was actually or if i just imagined it... but 10-20 seconds later, it started flipping back and forth between the Firmware install black screen with apple logo and the progress bar.. like 20x/second! and it lasted about 20 seconds.. about 3 seconds too short for me to capture on video!

So..I guess my vote will be 'not perfect'.

geez i really hope i don't have to retrograde again that was a bit of a nightmare; i don't have intel mac, makes it far more difficult.

Your video doesn' look much different from the responsiveness of my phone short of the cursing and threats of throwing it across the room.

I updated last night (around midnight)and within 2 minutes my phone had crashed. A reboot brought it back to life but no apps worked. This morning I did a complete restore to a new phone setup and after it had finished the home screen only showed 2 apps. Another reboot and all of the Apple apps were back and working. I then did a sync and added all of my contacts, apps and music. Throughout the day the phone has been working (as far as I know), but one or two unusual things have happened (screens appearing when they shouldn't) and I still can't use 3G or I get the "No Service" message. So still not working 100%.

By the way what happened to update 3.1.1 - we seem to have jumped straight to 3.1.2?
