Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I have a 3GS 32. I got the coma every couple of days. Went the last 10 days without a coma. Updated to 3.1.2 yesterday. Went out to dinner with coworkers last night and my Iphone went in to the coma. The problem is when my 3gs goes into the coma I can hold the buttons down for several minutes and hit the power button and cannot get it to boot up. I usually have to wait a few hours and it will let me boot it up. It never over heats or anything. Walked down to the Apple store and spoke to a manager who replaced it. Now the replacement screen looks a little washed out. The whites look darker and bluish. I have a 3g to compare it too and its very obvious. Also it has a couple of small specs of dust under the screen.

I have an apt today to swap it out again. Not sure if they will do it but I can prove the screen looks worse and has some dust you can really only see under bright light.

I updated my iPhone some minutes ago, lets see how it goes, anyway, since 3.1 I lost "Set Time and Date Automatically", I guess it is maybe a carrier problem, any ideas on that issue will be apreciated.

I've been having problems with the coma for about two weeks now. I had to bring my phone into the Apple store twice where they practically blamed it on me and replaced my phone. The new phone went into a coma too. After finally calling Apple and speaking with someone, it was acknowledged that there was a problem. I was told to sit and wait for the update.

I just updated my phone to the 3.1.2 version and it still isn't fixed!!! About 40 minutes after the update it went into a coma. I called AT&T a few days ago when it was working and told them that I refused to pay for service that I wasn't able to utilize. I'm at my wits end with this issue. The apple store is 45 minutes away from me. I can't keep running up there when there's a problem

    What to do!??!

Since the 3.1.2 update I have not had any further problems. Luckily my only issue was the random stop making/receiving calls/data. Since the update I am good to go - so far. It's been nearly 24 hours and I have not had a problem. This is the longest I have gone problem free since the 3.1 update - so here's hoping

I should clarify. I mean I had the cellular connectivity problem the most, and it only hung/coma'd once or twice BEFORE the 3.1.2 update. Since the update, I've experienced NO problems at all. Phone is back to the way it was on 3.0.1.

What to do? Waste one last hour and one half of your life going to and from the Apple Store, have a (gentle) table-thumper and point out that you've wasted enough of your time, have done everything requested so far and STILL do not have resolution.

Don't thump the table too hard or be abusive but if you're not dealt with promptly then request to see someone 'in authority' and explain your investment in sorting out your issue to them and that you expect them to show a similar 'investment'.

You'll probably be dealt with in a civil manner and promptly (unless you've been too 'direct', in which case the police might be called)....

In any case, because you've been 'through the mill' and are still polite, you'll probably get attention that will help you without causing you too much further pain.

    Good luck!

I updated to the 3.1.2 software yesterday and all is well (so far)! Everything seems to be working as well as it did with 3.0! It's been over 24 hours and not a single issue. And I like (finally) being able to use MMS!

Thank you, Apple, for fixing this. I just wish you would have acknowledged the problem instead of treating us like we were crazy, irresponsible, or worse. All the hassles of deleting software, reloading, exchanges of hardware, trips to the "Geniuses" and the like was such an unnecessary and frustrating process.

I wouldn't be thanking apple for anything. They shouldn't have released such buggy BS software. With the amount of money we pay for our devices PLUS the monthly service costs, we should not have to deal with things like this.

I think you can get it working.

Put your phone in DFU mode before restore it's critical to success. Search with google or YouTube to find directions ni think you'll be successful if you do.

still having similar problem after the update. can't wake with home. and a non-driver that can't go to apple store. thank the cosmic muffin i can keep ipod running and still use the phone. also, i can wake from coma by holding down the top button for 6plus seconds, which goes into some sort of reboot mode. it used to require a top AND home button. AuGH.
