Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I had a similar issue. Did you try a clean install using 3.1.2? Make sure you setup the phone as a new device than sync you apps, music, and contacts. Make sure you don't restore from backup because you might have a corrupt file in the backup like I did.

Yes , i did a clean install , actually i didn't install any old apps , only sync my contacts and music . a brand new clean 3GS 3.1.2 , and its still have the Coma .

Changed the SIM for other carrier ( to see if the problem is my carrier ) , worked fine for one hour , after that the Coma came back again like before !

People talking about having it 3 times a day , am having it All the time ! Am i the only one ? is it an hardware issue ? cause it its an hardware issue , i can't replace it cause there is no warranty here in kuwait .

This is unacceptable. Regardless of hardware or software the broad range of problems and the shear number of people experiencing this particular problem is completely ridiculous.

As i see it the freezing and random reboot is a software issue considering it happened to people around similar times, so i would not be afraid to either make a phone call to apple and tell them, specifically tell them, that the software has corrupted your products ability to function up to the expected standard and is causing a great deal of hassle. Make sure they understand that this did not happen in previous software updates to make your case clearer. Be mildly angry because you have the complete right to be.

So after all this time, there is still no fix for this issue??

The main reason for my wife to get a cell phone was for emergencies and now the iPhone 3G dies in the middle of the day after a full overnight charge, making it useless in an emergency. I agree with the previous poster, this is ridiculous and unacceptable. Can I just take the iPhone 3G back to the Apple store and have them downgrade to 3.0?? My wife really likes a lot of the new features, but not to the expense of having a working phone!!!

After reading this thread for weeks now, I finally decided to downgrade to 3.0 using the link mentioned here numerous times. I'm so glad I did. The headache of basically starting over without the benefit of a backup restore OUTWEIGHS the headache of multiple shutdowns and missed calls per day. The new features of 3.1 coupled with iTunes 9 are nice, but not worth the major bug we're talking about here. I'll upgrade to 3.1.x only when the coast is clear. I'll be checking this forum to make sure there are no bugs this time. Sheesh!

I still love Apple... I'm institutionalized, I guess. But I love it somehow.

I upgraded to 3.1 on the first day it was released, but I immediately encountered this coma problem. After enduring it for a few days and trying practically everything that was suggested by the good people here, I downgraded back to 3.0.1 and the problem disappeared.

I upgraded to 3.1.2 on the 9th and I haven't faced the coma problem since. I think a few people here has noticed that their phone is more responsive after upgrading to 3.1.2 and I noticed the same thing on my phone too.

3.1.2 looks good so far. I has fixed the coma problem for me.

I am on my FOURTH replacement iPhone 3G. Each time I've called about this same problem.

Each time I called, Apple tried to pin the blame on something else: My computer, a corrupted podcast (no doubt a Glenn Beck joint, since I subscribe to Maddow, Olbermann, and Obama's Weekly Address), a bad battery (probably made by another company and co-branded with Apple's logo), and a bad SIM card (clearly ATT's fault).

I told the Apple reps about this forum, on THEIR website, but they said all 2000 or so of you firetruckers =) are crazy, and have a vendetta out for poor misunderstood Apple. But it's NEVER their faulty operating system.

Last time I called, after 6 hours of restoring my iPhone (fortunately, contrary to their stupid instructions, I didn't wipe my old phone before restoring it to the new one - the new one came with an old OS), I told them I would have to call the FCC and the Federal Trade Commission, and that I had sent a letter to my attorney telling him if I died with my iPhone in my hand, he was to sue their maker for every mother-loving dollar they had. Those instructions still stand. I'm a diabetic and a heart attack survivor; I NEED my phone to work 24/7/365.25 -- not just LOOK like it will work. I might not live long enough to shut it down and reboot it again and again and again.

But I have just updated my OS to 3.1.2 per a post from earlier today. I hope it works. I am about sick of this. Considering everything Apple does to its hardware is of Apple's own doing, because they lock it down so tightly and restrict your access to proprietary content only, why does no one at Apple ever seem prepared to accept responsibility for putting out firmware that's so bad you'd think they were outsourcing their coding to the idiots in Redmond, wink-wink?

I am really amazed at this repeated FAIL.

Exactly the same happening to me. Upgraded to 3.1 on my 3g and random shut downs every time I lock the iPhone or it locks itself. I have to do hard reboot every time and since I have lots of apps, it takes ages to boot up. What can we do about this? Has someone called Apple support or visited an Apple store?

For heavens sake! If you had even read just a handful of the previous messages on this thread you would know that:
YES, the problem was reported to Apple many times
YES, many people visited an Apple store with the problem

    AND...

What you can do about this is upgrade your phone software to 3.1.2 which specifically fixes this problem (amongst many other things).

I´ve been reading all this posts for weeks, since I upgrade to 3.1. I tried just about anything suggested on this posts. My carrier suggested changing my iphone 3G 16GB fo a a brand new one. In fact, they are just about to change it. Last week, on the 8th of october, I updated to 3.1.2.

Clean install (really clean). I is as good as it gets. No problems whatsoever. No comma, no battery problem, no wifi problem.

Come on guys, it´s the same phone, is it not? Just do it!

    Problem solved!! 4 days already!!!!!!!

I'm one of PLENTY for whom a 'direct update' of 3.1.2 from 3.1 (.0?) did not solve the majority of the problems.. However, i did stumble into a solution that may work. i've JUST applied it to my own phone and will report updates over <a= http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2193390>On This Thread.

If your phone still acts like shown In THIS MOVIE (hyperlink), than you still have 'the bug' even if the coma is cured.

I think there is a fix = a clean install but a normal method of 'clean install' including DFU unit doesn't seem to be enough. I may have stumbled accidentally into a 'deeper cleaner' install.

My phone went from useless with 3.1 to useful with 3.01 (but sluggish) to useful (in-fact best ever responsiveness) but with occasional coma and 3.1, to 3.1.2 and sluggish with many issues like does not alert me of voicemail and i didn't get caller ID or ring on those calls that went to voicemail!

anyhow; go check out my post 3.12 thread listed above and see the last post i put on about my 'hack' install. Go view the video if you haven't yet; it exactly shows the type of problem the phone has if 'infected' with the comabug, or the 'postcoma bug' not exactly sure what to call it.

The random shut-downs are happening to me continuously, and it has become a very serious and dangerous issue. I rely on my iPhone for complete phone service (no home phone). The other night, I had to call 911 for a very serious emergency when my phone suddenly decided to shut itself off. I had no access to another phone nearby and was caught in the middle of a horrible medical emergency with my child.

This is simply unacceptable. What makes me even angrier is that AT&T/Apple wants to charge me $499 to upgrade to the new iPhone if I upgrade before 12/26/09, yet I am stuck with a phone that only sporadically works.

Updated to 3.1.2 when it came out and so far no more coma's. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm having similar issues as everyone else. Phone shutting off on own. Getting warm. Battery draining at ridiculous speeds. All since the 3.1 upgrade. Some days are better than others. Two days ago no shutting down, battery fine. Today 3 shutdowns and battery dead. Ironically, I've not used my phone, but for two short calls today.

I hope apple recognizes this and does something SOON!! I'm actually tempted to switch to Sprint and try their options. YES, it's getting that frustrating. Who wants a "cool" phone that doesn't work and you miss calls because it has shut down and you didn't know it?

I updated my phone, and it seems to work perfectly now. It's like getting a brand new phone! I'm a happy updater.
