Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Apple specifically states that the 3.1.2 update fixes the problem so I don't know what everyone is complaining about now that the update is out. I just updated tonight, but I have already noticed a much more responsive phone.

just update like a normal person and be happy.

All, I have been having this problem for a month now. I called Apple, they said restore. i did that. Nothing worked. Then they asked me to go to the store. They restored as a new phone. Same problem. Then I restored it as a new phone again. Happened again. So now I am at the very edge of just either asking for a replacement fix or just switching to another phone.

Had phone crash after 3.1 - Apple replaced due to current issue.
Had 2nd crash after 3.1 and then 'upgraded' to 3.1.2 - started crashing and draining battery fast. Apple replaced. 3rd phone still doing same-crashing on opening any app (even settings). How many times do you need to restart/restore/rebuild?

I made the Update a couple of days ago, it worked without any problems - since yesterday, suddenly it startet too with total shut downs!
    Is there any solution?

I hope the body of opinion on here carries some weight as at present I want to throw my iPhone through the window! Lovely wonderful piece of kit that I was proud to show off and now, since I updated the software its massively unstable, crashes, shut downs and generally 75% unusable. Tried four times today to send an e-mail and every time it crashed before I could finish. Phone calls stop half way through as the phone locks up. I am more bitter and twisted because it used to be so good but now..... I hope Apple are working every hour that God sends to sort this out because I need a fully functional system as soon as possible.

    Me again
Now, I am at home, started my iPhone again and saw, who tried to call me up: The Number was +215. I phoned swisscom up and they told me, they don't know what number this was, but I should never answer and never call back…

Just adding my woes to the list of complaints. Random shut downs after upgrade. Can't even force re-start. Just have to wait until I phone decides to come back on.
Sometimes comes back on w/ full battery- sometimes- no battery.
Happens when phone is charging. Happens overnight. Happens at random times. Is happening right now. Powered down at some point last night. Tried restarting every way possible. Tried charging. Tried syncing. Tried removing sim card. Won't come back on. Bad iphone. Bad...

Just upgrade to 3.1.2 (which totally fixes the problem this thread is about) and get on with your life, for goodness sake!

PLEASE just read the thread properly. The "coma" bug has been fixed in 3.1.2. Just upgrade and stop complaining about a problem which is now ancient history.
