Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update
Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?
On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.
so here is my response to apple's insufficient customer service
Hi, i have been having issues with my phone for about a week now. the phone will not wake up when it is asleep sometimes, about twice a day. all the physical buttons on the device will be unresponsive (power, home, volume, vibrate). the only way to wake the device up is to reset it using the power and home buttons. i know others have experienced this issue and you can see all their posts here
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2152619&tstart=0, on YOUR support forum. we all believe it has something to do with your great new 3.1 software update. it is hard for us to remedy this issue ourselves because you make it harder for us to downgrade to the more stable 3.0.1 software. i would also like to say that i have been to 2 apple stores 4 times in the last 3 days with this problem and i have done everything your apple GENIUSES told me to do with no avail, one even opened it up and checked for loose connections and my device looked fine. i feel the customer service of these geniuses are not as good as i believe they should be. one more thing i would like to add is that i purchased my phone in june and i also have the apple care plan so i am still under warranty.
took me 5 visits to the apple store to get mine replaced, running on 3.0.1 now and everything is back to normal. now i want mms which was supposed to be offered on 3.0.1 but now i need to get 3.1, i rather just wait till they actually finish working on 3.1 before i update for mms

In the UK and I think many other countries there is a legal requirement to allow mobile users free and unfettered access the emergency calls. This so-called coma mode potentially puts Apple in contravention of the law or else puts 02 in contravention and they can have recourse against Apple for causing the breach.
Apple, O2, is that comment of any interest?
hey send that as a bug report, apple does not even read these threads anyway
I've had the random crashes too. I sent it to Apple, got a new one (refurbished), updated it to 3.1 and restored it completely (with data from my old iPhone) and it works without any crashes for one week now. So it has to be some kind of hardware issue!
I read back on a bunch of your posts about your vista problems. I understand you are having problems with Vista and feel microsoft is not responding as fast as you would like. But what you are leaving out (unless I missed it) is have you restored your pc as new? Because if your restored as new pc is acting up, then it is up to the manufacturer to fix it (ie HP). If you installed vista on a home built pc or out of warranty pc, then there is no guarantee your hardware is compatible with vista. There are too many factors that could be causing your issue. With pc's and vista there are millions of hardware software combinations that could be causing issues. It would be near impossible for them to isolate your issue. That is why they make factory restore disks. Or reinstall vista, formatting your HD. Obviously there is a software/hardware conflict.
With the Apple iphone, there is only 3 possible hardware configurations and only 1 current OS for apple to support. Apple never lists the bug fixes when they release patches or service packs.
Trust me I will vote with my wallet. Applecare has taken good care of us, but we have experienced too many issues with our apple products (not just our iphones). MS has not been my best friend either fwiw.
I understood your point, I was just countering that MS does admit most faults they find. Sometimes though, the fault is impossible to find (like yours). You have some options at your disposal to possibly fix the problem.
With Apple, and this issue, they keep their mouths shut, and prevent solutions, which of course they have to do, cause if they allow solutions, it's admitting there is a problem. Microsoft offers a more open, public environment. This is great, but causes problems with hardware/software compatibilities. They have to be public with their issues/fixes.
With apple, they are a closed environment. They have limited proprietary hardware and software. There compatibility lists are short in comparison to MS's. Apple has far less of a reason to not get it right. Apple can't blame anybody but themselves. MS can always blame HP, HP can always blame Adobe....blah blah blah.
So I believe MS is good at admitting mistakes when appropriate. You will never see that kind of openness with Apple. Doing so would be too much of an image issue.
Same issue for me. After updating to 3.1 iPhone randomly shuts down.
It happened several times today and each time I had to hard reset it.
It always happens after I manually lock the phone or it times out and locks on its own.
All in all quite annoying and doesn't seem like an issue were restoring and reapplying the update would help, though I might try it in case Apple doesn't issue a fix.
Same thing has happened to me 5 times, restore has not helped. I am using the iPhone and everything seems fine. I lock it, then go to use it again either a few minutes or longer and it just doesn't respond at all. Screen doesn't turn on; nothing. Have to reset it and it comes back to life. Haven't been able to isolate it to an app yet or any other function. Also happens randomly. Last night it happened 4 times within 20 minutes. Happened one time this morning and it's been fine since.
Same here. I upgraded my 3G to software 3.1 last night. Right at the upgrade onset I got the 2006 error that required a reload of iPhone OS, then I restored all my content. Went to bed, it worked fine for about 4 hours this morning and as of about an hour ago, it shuts down after about 5 minutes of inactivity. I then have to hold down home and the wake/sleep button for 10 secs to make it reboot.
I haven't, my guess is they're swamped with problems with this update. I'm going to try to wipe all of the apps off, then restore the os then re-install all of the apps. No guarantees but I'm hoping this will help. I have noticed that virtually everyone that has posted has a 3g, not the S.
