Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I have the feeling the team pushed this update to be ready for the september conference of Apple. Perhaps they shouldn't have done that...

Anyway, officially their is a problem with this update. Is it possible that someone from Apple will actually respond to us in this forum? Or we wait and we add more post to this thread?

Same trouble hear. 3G has shutdown completely twice. Once while using the Messages app and it timing out. Then again this morning in Safari while manually locking the iPhone. I know 3.0 has some problems to but going to use my phone and seeing it completely off is a problem.

I know this update was geared towards the 3G S but Apple needs to still support the majority of users which are 3G.

    Please fix.

My iPhone has died again and has become a brick. It was just random. I had to hard reset in order to get it to respond.

Count me in. My iPhone 3G (8GB) is very unresponsive since 3.1. I also had random shutdowns.

Apparently a possible solution is to not use wake/sleep button.

For all the day there is no shut down.

Apple...Please Fix immediately...You can see all of us here are disappointed with your latest update. Being a Senior SQA Eng., this update should not have gone out to the public without testing all test cases.

Having all of the same issues as everyone here has posted, my important phone calls from Doctors are not getting through to me.

I am also getting the Blue Tooth issue where my device (in-ear), is draining the battery.

Hope to see an update very soon.

    HI Guys,

Just wanted to post to add to the count (maybe then Apple will even comment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

3g 16gb same issues, happens every 5 mins at least and needs a hard reset every night just to keep it working at this poor level.

Come on Apple this is an OS for hardware that you have build, its not like you can say that there is no way you could test all configs!!

Very confused users here at the moment I feel.

Add me to the list of people with this problem.

Conclusion: There are two possibilities causing this issue.
    1. Apple has released a malfunctioning update (3.0) which they refuse to recognize in public.
    2. The hardware is faulty.

(Sidenote about Tmobile: I purchased my iPhone in Tmobile store, Amsterdam. When I informed them about the issue and that I have followed most of the advices given here, they were willing to send the mobile phone off to repair but *not to lend me another phone meanwhile*. Had to use my additional insurance for that. And the other phone is not working. So now I am paying Tmobile 50+ Euros for a month when I can not use my phone because of theirs / Apples screw-up.)

Not only am I having the phone die (not as often as some of you, but it still does), but I'm having another weird problem. I use the phone to sleep to music with each night. I set the time to "sleep the ipod" and then go to one of my apps to pick something to listen to. Now, for whatever reason, it won't always shut off!!! PocketTunes won't shut off, AOL radio won't shut off. Iheartradio will. Shoutcast won't....and on and on. Since the 3.1 update, I've waked a couple of times at four in the morning with the music still going. I then checked it out and found out it won't shut off.

Of course this is on top of all the other problems....losing all my data, even though it was backed up, and on and on and on. AND THEN Apple support acting like I didn't know what I was talking about. "Take the phone to an Apple store" they say!! ARRRGGGGHHHH. Now I know the reason I stay with PCs. The closest Apple store is over 200 miles away!!!

Same issue here - I noticed that my exchange e-mails were slower initially and now the random shut downs. I cannot see any link to calendar syncing or manual sleep.

    This is very discouraging news!

I am also getting the shut-off issue. Or, at least it appears shut off. The phone will buzz with an incoming email. I press the home screen and nothing. Not sure if it really is off or just not responding. The silent button doesn't buzz the phone when toggled, so it's note getting any tactile feedback. I took it in to the Apple store yesterday and the "genius" behind the bar does a hard boot and says "fixed". Bah! I already knew I could do that. The boot up time is now excruciatingly slow.

Today, when doing my sync, iTunes says my computer is not authorized so I had to "re-"authorize it. That's now 3 out of my 5. It's done that for the 3.0 and now 3.1 updates. At least when it hits 5, I know I can de-authorize all and start over. It just exemplifies another issue.
