Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Please. Another one from AirTel India. This does not seem to be a problem with the carrier or phone, but the OS update.

    Apple. Please fix.

I don't have a solution, just adding my name in hopes of attracting some official attention. I have a 3G with the 3.1 software. I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.1 on my MB, as well as iTunes 9.0. My phone has locked up on me 3 times since upgrading the iPhone OS, requiring a hard reset each time to bring it back to life.

Just wanted to post my update here. I've submitted a feedback report to Apple with no response. I switched off wifi and I've been stable and happy since. I'd like to be able to use my wifi, so a fix for this would be nice. I have not done any restores or removed any apps. Aside from not being able to use my wifi it's actually been faster and better than the 3.0 update. I work in IT and understand that the true definition of an upgrade is to take out old bugs and put in new bugs and it seems like it's a small subset of users that are affected with no common thread other than the 8GB 3G hardware, but you'd still think this would've come up during the QA process. I'm out of warranty at the moment so I'm sure support won't do anything other than try to sell me a new 3GS but if enough of us submit the feedback reports then maybe it will get enough attention to get fixed in the next update. Seeing as I'm not seeing widespread reports on engadget.com, theiphoneblog.com, wired.com, etc I'm not thinking this is a big enough issue to get a patch out quickly. My hope is that we'll get a patch on 9/25 and this will be included in that.

Actually it is not just 8gb hardware, my 16gb 3G has all these problems regardless of what I turn on and off( WiFi, Bluetooth etc. ) plus I've read reports of 3GS users having the same problems.

In fact if you look through this rather long thread you'll see it's across the board (not every user just hardware base) on iPhone hardware according to people posting here.

    This is what I did;

Turn everything off. I'm currently only on EDGE. Nothing else, no bluetooth, no wi-fi no nothing.

I also noticed (on saturday) that Push Notifications was on after updating to 3.1, I didn't turn it on, so I guess the update did that by itself. After turning off Push I've had no crashes for 48+ hours.

Also came across this; http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2009/09/13/apple-offers-clarification-on-mobile- safari-anti-phishing-feature/

And wonder if that "passive" updating can have something to do with the phones freezing up. Unlikely, and a longshot, but thought I might bring it to the table anyways.

I posted earlier, and I recently tried the same thing that mlfnk did. I've turned bluetooth, push, fetch, and wi-fi off. I haven't had coma mode for awhile. Of course I'd like to be able to use these features again sometime, but in the meantime this has completely bypassed coma mode.

Actually there is NO known solution for that problem. And I'm very unhappy with apples communication policy.

I'm using the iPhone in our company as a business phone. Now all the Win-Nerds laugh about this...

    Twice frustrating.

OK, spoke to an Apple tech, who forwarded the call to an iphone specialist, who then told me that they are aware of the problem and an RTI has been submitted to their engineers. Unfortunately there is no fix at this point. He suggested I restore the phone to new, and try differnt things that have worked for other people on this board (disabling notifications, push, calendars, etc). So, at least they know about the issue and hopefully we will have a fix soon.

I am very happy that Apple took the time to calm down their users and advise them that they are aware of the problem.

    Uhhhh....

    NOT

    Thank you ddarman.

Thanks for this information. Maybe they'll learn from that major problem and don't seed a software which is Not Even Beta!

I've had the same problem. Snow Leopard with iTunes 9, upgraded an iPhone 3G (8GB) from 3.0 to 3.1 (skipped 3.0.1).

Has anyone had this occur with iTunes 8? When reporting having the same problem it might help to list that too so we can see if there's a trend. That's the only difference I can think of that hasn't been listed here (3G, 3GS, normal apps, full wipe/restore, all seem to have had the problem).

kmarchand, the only "commonality" seems to be that everyone on this topic had updated their software on an iphone 3G pr 3GS to the current version. There has not been one fix that has worked for everyone, nor is it isolated to a particluar model (8GB, 16GB or 32GB, black or white). Sorry to disappoint.

I didn't expect to find a commonality. I just didn't read anything here or in other posts about whether anyone had NOT upgraded to iTunes 9 and had the same problems when updating an iPhone using iTunes 8. Since they were both new at the same time, the problem could be one or the other (i.e. a fault with 3.1 vs a fault with iTunes 9's sync/update mechanism).

Gathering a bit more info while waiting for Apple to get around to this couldn't hurt.

After a "reboot" following this "coma state" of my phone, I don't have to unlock the sim-card. Could it be a problem with the light sensor? I'm thinking about the possiblity that the os is still running but nothing to see on the screen ?!?
