Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

When I did my upgrade it was through iTunes 8. I've since upgraded to iTunes 9 and the problem existed with both versions.

I also sit corrected on the hardware commonality. Weird too how some things are working for some and not others. For me it was disabling wifi. For someone else it was disabling MobileMe. Usually you'd see some commonality in the workarounds but there doesn't seem to be a silver bullet area to isolate the problem.

I have the same problem as well. A couple of times per day my phone will not wake up from sleep mode unless I do a reset. Apple, please provide an immediate fix!

I had the same problem. Had no issues for a whole day, then the next day I got the problem you read about in this thread. I was wondered if maybe the file iTunes had downloaded was corrupted so I downloaded a .ipsw I read about in this thread:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9942918&#9942918

    I haven't had a issue so far. "

So far so good! Tomorrow will be the true test. I am putting my guess as that a lot of us got corrupted firmware during the crush to get the latest and greatest.

    Drum roll please......Fail

Well ladies and gentlemen, I have not resolved my issue. Around 2 PM EST, my phone was paused while listening to a podcast and when I pressed the button on my headset, it would not resume. It had indeed went into it's narcoleptic nap for a few minutes and then came back with a press of a button. I just am just owning up and admitting I was completely wrong. :P

Best of luck to you all!

Having this problem with 3.1 as well. I'm currently trying to resolve it by turning Wifi off. Just another hat to toss into the ring.

Haha, well turning Wifi off didn't work for me. Just as soon as I had posted, I tried to turn on my phone, and sure enough, dead in the water.

Well I have found some hope ... I have turned off Wifi, and turned off 3G. Know it has only shut off once a day lately, instead of the 3 or 4 times I was getting. Does anybody think that maybe there will be a new update on the 25th for adding MMS and possibly a fix too?? God I hope so

Could we please have a downgrade link please Apple? Just while this issue is being fixed, I'm pulling my hair out every time I do anything on my phone, just replying to a text is stressful and labours. Please help!

My 16GB 3G was in restore mode Saturday night after an unsuccessful attempt at downgrading to 3.01. I normally sync to my work computer, but I restored to 3.1 with my laptop, using a fresh download of 3.1 and set it up as a new phone. It worked perfectly the rest of the weekend. I put all my apps and music back on this morning at 7:00. It's no after 1:00 and still haven't had any problems.

I understand a restore and setting up as a new phone doesn't seem to work for everyone, but so far, it's fixed my problem.

Add me to the list. Since I upgraded to the latest OS my iPhone 3G battery suddenly drains in no time at all. It won't turn on or turn off; I just get the red drained battery icon. I have to charge it before I can use it or restart. I now have to keep my iPhone plugged in several times a day. This needs to be fixed asap. Worked perfectly before 3.1.

Just to put my hat in the ring. I have had the same issues upwards of 4 times a day since I upgraded. I use my phone for work and this is crazy. I keep having clients calling me, and I don't even know it. My old phone never left me out in the cold like this. Tisk Tisk Apple. I know Steve has been out of the office, but that dosen't mean the kids can just play. Put all the $$$ from all the marketing into fixing these issues.

    Hi,
I think I have something to wait for Apple's update...
It seems to arrive when the iphone is "doing something" if you push the upper button (checking mails, sending informations via mobileme...). If you push upper button when the iPhone is doing nothing...then nothing happens. Maybe that why it doesn't "die" if you let him go to standby mode by itself... I have tried this today, and guess what? Everything was all right
I hope it will help lot of people...
    Good luck.

Follow up to my Apple appointment. The guy did not hear of the problem, actually opened up my phone and said their was a lose wire. However it must have been from him opening it up, since the "coma" is completely different symptoms then the screen wire being loose (hard reset turning it back on). After a bit of arguing about why this would be happening he ended up giving me a new 16Gb 3G iPhone with 3.0.1 on it.

I suggest if you can go to an Apple store and complain about this issue so they know that we won't sit by and be at the mercy of their firmware upgrades. My best suggestion is to annoy them until they do something. Use the warranty they gave you and complain until something is done. Phone's should be usable at all times, not at the firmware's earliest convenience.
