Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Add me to the list of 3G iPhones not working since 3.1 update. Locks up/shuts down, only hard reboot brings it back. Battery indicator all over the place. Backup/Restore has taken all day long.

I haven't read through all 20 pages but after experiencing the shutdown issue for two days, I read somewhere that turning off Notifications under Settings would work. I also deleted a couple of applications that used it (SportsTap and AP Mobile). Since then (I did this Saturday), I've had no problems at all.

Me too. It's happened three times now.

Also, keypad is no longer working during phone calls (really annoying when dealing with automated services that ask you to make a choice with your keypad). Also, annoying buzzing noise has appeared when making and taking calls (I'm nowhere near any speakers when I do this).

    (Irrritating.)

I ONLY UPGRADED TO 3.1 ON FRIDAY THINKING THAT IT WOUL FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT ALAS IT DID NOT!

WHAT THE **** IS HAPPENING APPLE? OR COULD IT BE AT&T WITH ALL THEIR NETWORK CHANGES GOING ON?

Now the phone is really freaking out. I've got the phone sitting right here beside me on the desk, with five bars. This is the second time today that calls have gone straight to voice mail without even ringing. This is getting VERY frustrating. My wife is in one town, my elderly parents are in another and this is the only phone that I have. I'm beginning to get very angry

Here is a new one for you all. As I am leaving work today, I noticed that my phone said No Service. While signal strength in my building is only decent in spots, I never drop below 1 bar edge. I figured that my signal would return by the time I left the parking lot. Nope! A mile down the road and still no signal. Rebooted at the next light and suddenly full bars.

My suspicion is that Apple has added too many background processes to the phone and ever the 3Gs cannot handle the work load. This goes along with the problem of Mail remaining running in the background after you exit it - even with manual or NO account setup.

Add my name to the list. Seems to go dead just after I have used it though no particular app seems to cause the problem. Hard reset is the only way to bring it back to life. Also battery life is down by half. Lucky to get to lunch time at the mo.

    OS3.2 come on!

Like everyone else, I upgraded to 3.1 last week and BAM. Even if I do a hard boot by holding top and bottom buttons, it won't show the phone rebooting for like 5 mins. and then bam, it loads the OS. Apple, AT&T or both have basically screwed my phone. They have got to fix this crap like NOW! It has happened at least 10 times since Friday. I'm going back to 3.0 because that was the last trouble free release I had. With 3.01 calls would drop all the time and people would call me and it would go straight to voicemail even though I had full bars. But, I will take that over this freeze/crash crap. All this for some lame upgrades. So not worth it. Badd Apple on you!!

I was wondering the same thing. Today I had the "problem" and I tried calling my phone to see if it would wake up but it just went to voicemail. I was busy at work and didn't feel like messing around with it, so I stuck my phone back in my pocket. I pulled out my phone an hour later and it worked fine without doing anything. I thought it might be the screen, but it should have at least vibrated or rang when I called it.

There is something wrong with the battery too. While I used to charge my iPhone every night, after the update, by noon I have to plug it in or it'll run out.

3.1 is a "bag of hurt"!

Add me to the list. I have seen all the problems mentioned -- non responsive dark screen - 4-10 times per day - (seems more frequent today while in Chicago), unusually high battery drains, no ring strait to voice mail...

I also just saw something weird in that the phone was sitting here on the bed in idle (dark screen), but then on it's own, screen turned on to "unlock" screen without any touch or movement.

This might upset some people but the bug causing the "coma" issue was present in the 3.1 betas and Apple didn't catch it. I have been dealing with this problem for a month or so now and it's been very frustrating. There is nothing worse than not being able to count on your phone when your waiting for an important call or text. In some twisted way though I am happy to have company. Welcome to my world!

Also, just to make sure the issue wasn't my phone, I had it replaced. Not even two hours into using the new phone it fell into the coma.

I'm having the same problems too. Installed the update on Friday and I've had to hard reset the phone 4 times since then.... wait, make that 5!!

It just goes blank and doesn't come back to life.

The phone was already a pain because of dropped calls and calls not initiating as they often get stuck on the "connecting..." screen. But this latest update really closes the deal for me. I'm getting a Blackberry again!

So today to add to the problems I am also now having failures trying to send text messages on AT&T with 16gb iPhone 3G.

One thing remains consistent for me....when plugged in it does not crash or coma on me and remains responsive to input.
