Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

This has been my experience as well. My iPhone has been freezing since 3.1 update and running hot / low battery life. I also noticed that push was enabled for my Exchange account after the update. Turned it off and so far I've not noticed any freezes or hot-ness and have better battery life (24 hours currently).

Well I'm down for the count for good this time. The Genius Apple engineer noted that I had the infamous red dot located on my USB port interface (which indicates water damage). So from this point on it's a hardware problem as far as they are concerned.

raising hand to be added to the list of problems....updated iTunes, but didn't reboot. plugged iPhone in to charge and agreed to the update. It attempted 3 times to update, and during the last attempt my phone alarm went off. I couldn't get it to turn off, then it turned itself off, and then said i needed to reset to factory settings. I feel like my problem is related to what's been described here. I have not had my laptop and phone in the same place together for a few weeks. So unfortunately now i have lost a lot of data. Why after 4 days is there nothing posted anywhere to warn us? to fix it? And, my phone is frozen, so I can't even put in a call for support to call me! boo on you Apple.

My iphone 3g had the same problems after the 3.1 update so the best solution i have for you iz to first setup a genius bar appointment on the apple website (if your apple protection plan is still valid) then go to the apple store. in the first session theyll opt to wipe out your phone, which they did mine but it still continued to randomly shut down. So you setup another appointment and you go in and you tell them your still experiencing the same problems and hopefully the give you a BRAND NEW device. Thats what they did in my situation, hopefully youll have the same outcome.

I just want to add myself to the list of having the same problem.

I know software problems occur but the way Apple handles what is considered mission critical situations to people is totally unacceptable. Guess what Apple, people use these phones for business. After 5 days, surely you can post something acknowledging the problem and let us know if you are working on a fix. By the complete silence, I must assume that we are on our own. Guess what, I need a working cell phone. If Apple does not have the decency to immediately update us on the situation, I will have no option but to resolve my problem of getting working cell phones.

I was in the same boat. Upgraded to 3.1 on Friday. By Saturday my 16gb 3G was randomly shutting down throughout the day. I spent Sunday afternoon and evening restoring to 3.0.1 and restoring all of my settings and accounts. Thanks for the HUGE pain in my butt Apple.

I too was finally able to restore my iPhone 3G to 3.0.1. It took a while to figure out how. But it is doable with the help of Google.

I still think Apple needs to provide a solution to this problem.

Count me in. It happened twice since my update from 3.0 to 3.1. Then i completely restored with 3.1 and it seems not locking forever anymore

I encountered this issue for the first time tonight; freaked me out for a little bit. Also had one battery drain incident since the 3.1 update. Other than these issues, 3.1 is solid and I've noticed better battery life...particularly with internet radio apps.

To add my voice, I have the same issue on a 2G and a 3G. The update causes the phones to freeze and two to three times a day crash and shut down.

As you can imagine that's not good enough from a quality software house. Is this a worrying trend in Apples Quality Assurance processes?
