Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Another one right here. iPhone 3G experiencing random lock-ups that are only fixed with a hard reset.

Welcome to the big wide world of main stream consumer products Apple... thank god my Windows 7 laptop doesn't do this

To all the Apple fan boys... relax... I'm joking.

just wanted to add my name to this list of ongoing bollocks. I've had probably around 15-20 complete shutdown/black screens since I upgraded.
How a piece of software like this was released publicly I cannot understand.
    Apple? Response please...

Same random shutdowns here. Also, I've noticed that the MobilePhone service crashes making the phone unable to receive any calls. Additionally, 3.1 seems to be pretty RAM hungry and drain your batteries much more quickly than before.

    It's a very serious problem.

When you receive a call while the which blocked iPhone and who calls feels free line and
will believe that we feel the telephone.

we can write to apple a feedback, apple notice to 20.000 feedback

It is a big ******* problem. i went on more than 24 hours without the phone getting a fit and then it had 3 in a row this morning. it would probably help everyone having this issue filled in a feedback form.

do you people know how many reports it takes to make it an issue that apple engineers will actually look at? what is the critical percentage of users having an issue to make it an issue? i mean, we can go on ******** about it but if it's only a couple of hundred cases out of thousands or millions, who cares?

and if it were only the lockup or freeze. BUT IT DOESN'T TAKE CALLS in the meantime. I am extremely dissatisfied and angry. should've stuck with the bleeding blackberry.

Same problem here. Random shutdowns that I don't notice. Phone hangs when entering slide to unlock screen, which is great when a call is coming through. And general slow response across the phone (yes Apple force me to get a 3G-S).

Lost a deal for £10k as I missed a call, do I invoice Apple direct for this?

    PLEASE FIX!

Settings -> Safari -> Fraud Warning -> Off

Setting this up stopped all freezing-unresponsive-shutdown problems.

Did it this morning and I have not faced even one shutdown. Please try and post your feedback.

I too am suffering the same random shutdown/freeze issue. Mine appears to have been fine for three days and then I enabled syncing of Genius Mixes - not sure if that's related but it's the only thing that has changed - and now my phone is locking up.

I'll also try turning off the Safari fraud warning and see if that makes a difference.

Also left feedback using the link posted earler, the more feedback they get the better.

The only solution is to downgrade to 3.0.1 using DFU mode and iRecovery. I had about 8 comas per day since the 3.1 upgrade despite doing everything already suggested in this topic including restoring. It now works again perfectly under 3.0.1. So either downgrade or wait for the next update

This seems to have fixed the freezing and sluggishness problems. Definitely turn off the "Fraud Protection" (gee, protect my unworking iPhone from my own random link clicking) and see if that helps.
