Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

NO, it doesn not fix the problem. "Fraud Warning" is off at my iphone since 2 days. Random total shutdown still happens...

Having this problem as well - posted in another thread but since this seems to be the most popular one related to the issue I'll put my name down here too.

I am having similar problems as others. My phone hangs and the touch screen seems unresponsive.

No solutions here, just yet another user having the same problem. Phone works fine, then I lock it, when I go back, it's unresponsive. Hard reset works like a charm until it happens again. This started a couple of days after I upgraded to 3.1 (for some reason the pull-down for OS at the bottom of the comments window does not list iPhone OS 3.1 as an option?). It happens about 2-3 times a day.

Another one to add to the list - its so **** annoying that my phone worked perfectly well before this update. May I suggest to apple that testing the updates would be beneficial.

Count me in too.. It didn't happen right away. The first time it crashed was last Saturday (got the update the 2nd day it came out)but since then its been happening often. Around 7-10 times a day (like many here I use my phone A LOT).

I hope Apple comes out with a patch soon! This is just unacceptable! I have to keep checking to see if it's still alive and I'm getting my important messages which of course makes it more likely that a crash will happen! AAARRRGGGHHH!

I did what someone told here previuosly: turn off the Push on the exchange account, and since them I haven't suffer of another shutdown.

    Hope they don't come back.

I also started having the mysterious blackouts yesterday, after having updated the phone late last week. However, in my case things have gotten a bit stickier.

After about 3-4 "blackouts" with me resetting the phone, the phone would no longer 'reset.' Upon being reset, it started giving me the USB cable and iTunes icon "connect me to itunes" screen ... but with no ability to make even emergency calls.

I'm writing because when I went to restore, iTunes (version 9.0) pretty quickly reported that the phone could NOT be restored due to Unexpected Error (28). Tried a second computer with the same result. I eventually found my way to DFU Mode, and was able to reinstall the system once. However, the phone then failed to sync properly, and so I went to restore it again. However, it went right back to Unexpected Error (28) with that attempt. I've since tried DFU mode at least 5 times, and also tried a different computer and different USB cable, and can NOT get the phone to restore at all.

I have a Genius appointment, but just wanted to give a heads up that in my case the resetting/rebooting from the blackout screen seems to have rendered the phone inoperable.

Oh, one more thing ... this phone is only 2 weeks old and has been cared for VERY gently in terms of physical handling. I dropped my old iPhone about 2 weeks ago, and replaced it with this one at my own expense since I was such a klutz. My point, though, is that this phone, while a 3G, is physically a brand new device and well cared for. It had worked perfectly prior to the 3.1 update, and I'm no engineer, but it sure would surprise me if it's a hardware issue as "Error (28)" purportedly implies.

ucking ****. the plot is getting thicker and thicker.
i wonder: in a couple of weeks, unless there is a software fix to this issue, apple service will be flooded with these phones and then they can't do anything else but physically replace the phones. how lucrative is that for apple? cheaper than paying engineers to do their jobs on the firmware?

I am having the same problem! My phone has shut off nearly 10 times since the update last week.

Apple told me to restore the phone "as a new phone" to make sure it was anything in my backup. I did that last night, set everything up again, and now it shut off twice this morning.

This is very frustrating! Apple has graceously provided a free instance ot tech support for this issue since my 90 days of support expired some time ago.

Any suggestions? Do you think it's the 3.1 update or could it be hardware?

Update: Making the following (temporary) adjustments to iPhone settings and my usage patterns have significantly decreased the number of "coma" episodes for me. While this is not a fix, it lessens the annoyance to about 1 coma/day for me.

    1. Set Auto-Lock to Never (found in Settings -> General). This will require you to put your iPhone to sleep manually by pushing the sleep/wake button.

    2. Before putting iPhone to sleep, exit out of any and all apps (i.e. my iPhone is on the first home screen before I push the sleep/wake button).

    3. Disable (Google) Calendar Subscriptions on iPhone (optional, I have my calendar subscriptions turned off, but I'm starting to doubt whether that's a contributing factor).

I hope this is helpful to some of you until Apple releases iPhone software 3.1.x.

yeah same problem here, the phone is very sluggish.
Have had to do a couple of soft resets to get it going again.
Bit of a pain in the back side when one's work relies on this **** brick.
When will APPLE post something here?

I am on my second day of no comas (knock on wood). I have not turned off push or done anything with the settings that other folks have suggested. I have simply returned to the home screen before putting the iPhone to sleep manually.

I noticed that I would leave the iPhone in the Mail app. The iPhone would buzz with a new message arrived and I'd go to read it and it'd lock up the moment I pressed the menu/home button, requiring a hard reboot.

Now that I am going to the home screen before initiating sleep mode, it seems to be working just fine. I'd like to hear if others have the same success with this or if it is just coincidence.

a couple of you guys are now suggesting to quit all apps before putting it to sleep. for the last 8 hours i've been continously listening to music on my iphone and been putting it to sleep and waking it since i'm not using a headphone with a pause/start control button and i need to wake the phone to pause music or start it again. i had the ipod interface on all the time. and it hasn't gone into a coma at all although the ipod app was running all the time.
it went into 3 comas in the morning when i was browing with safari. and i closed safari and went to the home screen before putting it to sleep.
i dunno. nothing seems to give an answer to this issue.
