Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Just wanted to add my "me too" to this thread. I went to the Genius Bar Sunday and was told the I could buy a replacement phone for $199 (I'm off warranty) or I could have a complete firmware restore done there at the Apple store (to insure a "good" copy of the firmware). I returned yesterday after backing up my contacts and had the firmware restore performed, then spent all of last night syncing apps & media back to my phone.

    This morning, another unexplained shutdown.

I've got a call with Apple support scheduled for 1:15pm. I'll report back with any news.

I had two semi-comas yesterday that was able to get out of, and I noticed that I had a black screenshot in my photo roll. Has anyone else noticed a screenshot as a result of a coma? That could explain the battery drain.

I've had the same problem too, 3 times in two days... I talked to support yesterday and they told me to just restore the phone through itunes. I did it and it has not done it again, yet. She didn't know of anyone else having this problem. I guess they don't read these post. Let you know if it makes it through the day.

Another "me too" here. Very frustrating as you do not know its in a coma state until you go to use it. I also saw a black photo in my camera roll and actually heard the camera shutter sound once right before it locked up.

I've seen a few messages that mention something about the camera, so I thought I'd check my Photos app. it says "Camera Roll (1)" but when I select it I get "No Photos". Not sure if the camera has anything to do with Comas, but this is an issue (saying there are pictures when there isn't any).

Mine too - 3g 8gb, auto-offs then goes unresponsive (4-5x in last 24 hours). After a while starts responding again and it appears all my button presses during the time it was off are queued and then executed when it comes back on. Have not tried a hard reset yet.

I had the random shutdown with my Iphone 3GS and I my wife experienced it on the first generation Ipod touch after I passed it on to her. Strange enough the IPOD touch never had an issue until I updated it to 3.0/01. I returned my iphone 3GS and was given a new one and I have not seen the shutdown issue since. I did however see a problem where the back lighting refuse to come on in full after depress the menu button on the bottom of the phone.

Suggestion: On the Mac you sync the iPhone with, open the Console application. On the left sidebar, go to Files>CrashReporter>MobileDevice>xxx iPhone (where xxx is the name of your iPhone).
There you will see any crash reports, which will help narrow down what is causing your crashes. Each crash incident logs here with the name of the app and the date/time as part of the crash log.

I was getting several Springboard crashes.

[Sorry, don't know the procedure to find this info if you sync with a PC]

This isn't a solution, why did you accept a new 3G with old software? The problem is in the new software from what I can tell - are you going to load 3.1 and submit your findings?

Add me to the list. My iPhone 3G has been going into a coma repeatedly since upgrading to 3.1. Note that if you have an alarm set and the phone goes into a coma in sleep mode, the alarm will NOT go off. Thankfully, I did not have any early appointments on the morning when I discovered this.

Per suggestions earlier in this thread, I turned of fraud warnings and switched from push to manual fetch for my Exchange email. Hopefully, that will help until this issue is fixed by Apple.
