Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

    ME TOO

As many others, I turned of fraud warnings and switched from push to manual fetch for my Exchange email. Seems to work... I'm going to genius bar the day after tomorrow, it's really hard to work beeing in trouble all day long with the obsession if your iphone is still alive or in deep coma...

Maybe unrelated... but, it happened AFTER 3.1 update..

My iPhone 3G completely lost signals for both voice and bluetooth. It said "searching..." in a aread where I always got full bars. And, it wouldn't pair with my bluetooth headset. After several attempt to reconnect, I had to reboot my iPhone. I NEVER had this problem before the 3.1 update.

Just off the phone with Apple concerning the unexplained shutdowns since the upgrade to 3.1. The first level of technical support is as helpful as they can be, but if you're out of warranty the answer from them will be that you need to pay $199 for a replacement phone in order to resolve the problem. Explaining that you are not the only user experiencing this problem will do nothing for you -- as the technical support representative explained to me, the 400 or so replies on this thread are meaningless compared to the millions of iPhone users out there. Please note that I am not adopting this view (not all of the millions have updated their software, all users affected by this problem will not realize it b/c the phone "wakes up" from its coma after nine minutes or so, not everyone who becomes aware of the problem will reply to this discussion, etc.), but this is the response that I received from first level technical support.

If you express dissatisfaction with this result (as I did), you will be given the option to have the call elevated to a product professional. YOU SHOULD DO THIS IF YOU ARE OFF-WARRANTY. The product professional with whom I spoke was extremely knowledgeable about the iPhone and the various ways to reset it. Unfortunately, he had not heard of the problem which many of us are having and offered to discuss the issue with an engineering person. In the meantime, he walked me through various reset options, including removing and dusting the SIM card. Then he said that he would discuss the issue with engineering and suggested that I monitor the phone over the next several hours to see if the resets we performed solve the problem.

If this process doesn't solve the problem, the options for those of us off-warranty are limited. Some reference on this and other threads has been made to having one's phone "captured" by Apple -- I believe this refers to having Apple request that you send in your phone so they can study the problem and having a replacement shipped to you at no cost. However, such a "capture" does NOT appear to be a common response to a problem such as this, and I do not believe that insisting that Apple "capture" your phone is necessarily a viable option in every case.

So that's where I am. I plan to monitor my phone by checking to see if it will turn on every ten minutes or so, and then e-mailing the product professional to whom I spoke to let him know what's happening. If I hear more, I will let you know.

    Good luck,
    Charlie

I've been having the same issue since I "upgraded" to os 3.1. Went to the apple store, and they gave me a new iphone 3g. Guess what? It keeps on happening on this new iphone. I've restored it as "new phone" 3 times having the same problem. Annoying!!!! Now I have to check my iphone every 15 minutes to make sure is on and I don't loose any calls.

I know this has all been hashed and re-hashed already. But after reading a few forum posts about people experiencing improvements after completely deactivating push, I'm going to try that and monitor my phone.

    Coma/crash count so far today == 4.

Here's hoping it won't go up.

Had another crash after turning of fraud notification and switching to manual fetch on Exchange email account. I also noticed that the phone heats up a lot when these lockups occur. Oddly, when it comes back, the iPod controls appear on the screen.

Tried disabling wifi - failed to make a difference.
Tried disabling background notifications - still get comas.
Now disabling exchange push - set to manual for exchange, fetch for gmail. We'll see.

"It just works..." about as good as Vista.

You are all luckier than me. The phone only stays on when I am actually using it. It is driving me crazy. How can we reset it and get the 3.01 software back on it in my itunes and iphone.

    HELP

My 3G seems to go dead overnight after the update. The battery will indicate 100% at midnight so I don't charge it. At seven the next morning, the battery is totally depleted to below 5%. No applications were left on and all push turned off. It has done this 3 nights in a row since the 3.1 "update."
