Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Well, I just spoke to a product professional after calling 1-800-myiphone and they are now sending me a replacement 3G overnight.

Funny this was that the man I spoke with has been having the same problem with his iPhone 3G having random shut downs. He said they have a laundry list of "fixes" they are trying to address (with some sort of software update) and this is one of them.

    @Mehlski

I've been having random shut downs too. None of the other problems (knock on wood). Perhaps the fact that you are getting them everytime that you're not using the phone has to do with the method in which you let it go into standby mode. Have you tried different methods (e.g. pressing the power button versus allowing it to timeout into standby mode)?

    Are you still under warranty?

I guess I spoke too soon regarding my fix turning off all push, fetch, wi-fi, and bluetooth options. The issues have come back, though they don't occur as often.

yes, I'm still under warranty. Just bought the 3G 2 months ago. They did waive the $29 charge for overnighting me a new phone as well (I don't have the apple protection plan and don't live near an apple store).

3GS 32GB 3.1 Just froze again now. This is the second time in 3 days. This time I am not going to try to reboot it. I want to see if it comes back on its own. Apple has got a serious problems here. Im using my trustly Blackberry Bold as my main phone now. This thread is almost up to 500 posts now not to mention other threads that are related.

I am another user with the problem. I've been freaked out finding my iphone totally dead and unresponsive twice now, starting the first day after installing 3.1.

Then seemingly randomly, the phone clicks back on again after I have panicked for a while. I am relieved to find out I am not alone.

I never messed with my phone such as jailbreaking. I never had this problem before the 3.1 update. I also updated my partner's phone the same time as mine; he has not noticed any problems. The software installation went fine on both, the only thing I can think of is that on mine, on a subsequent sync (after the sync that installed 3.1) the sync got stuck and I disconnected the iphone and then later re-synched it. It seemed fine, it otherwise seems to be operating normally and in fact is picking up my wifi faster than it was with 3.0 and 3.01 (but not as perfectly as it did BEFORE 3.0), but a couple of hours after that interrupted sync, was when I got my first "coma."

My 3G also froze up last night.

Keeping fingers on power and home button did the trick. The only thing that occured before the freeze was a push notification from AP News. I tried to bring up the AP app several times lafter the re-boot but AP News kept crashing. I tried this morning and AP News came up without a hitch.

Since last night's freeze I have not experienced any freezes. (knock on wood)

Don't know if it's related, but I've also been having some network issues, which range from misteriously disappering network bars to very little cell network in places where before I had no problems whatsoever, full bars...Also since 3.1.

I want to throw my lot in as well since for the first time my iPhone 3G shuts crashes.

4 times since the update to 3.1.1 the phone crashes after using the ear bud mic pause button to halt the playing of an audiobook.

I've experienced the same issue. My iPhone has shut down at least 8 times in total. 3 of those After several resets to factory settings. I too have too restart the phone by resetting it.

My wife experiences this same issue yesterday after taking a photo with the camera on her 3G. A tech support call (to me) and a reset by holding home/power for 10 seconds resolved it (at least temporarily).

Same problem here, only every once and a while I get it back but it acts like its taking a picture from the home page.

I am on my second iPhone 3Gs and have made 3 trips to the Genius bar. We did full restores, resets, and even set it up as a new iPhone with different name, etc. They try this and send me home to test it out. Then within the hour the phone auto-reboots and is sluggish -- sometimes restarting several times in a row with the double and triple vibrate patterns occuring.

My discovery so far is as follows:

It seems that it is something related to my contacts folder syncing. I have about 3000 contacts and many have some long note fields. I created a sub-folder called iPhone and loaded about 50 of my most used contacts. Then I sync with only this folder. So far so good.

It was completely rebooting, shutting down, freezing and acting very random whether I had it plugged into my Macbook or unplugged. (I think from the over-the-air sync with Moble Me.

Are these symptoms similar to what has been going on for others?
