Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Well now I cannot get it to turn on at all. Held down both buttons for over a minute. I know my batt is fully charged. Any ideas. Id rather not exchange it until Apple fixes the bug.

same problems here (freezing, not responding)

this seems to be only occuring when i'm not connected to a wifi network, on my trip to munich this days it happend a lot (2-3 times a day) when i was in the city but never when i was at "home", where i was logged into the wifi network.

i have no calenders synced over the air nor contacts and am not using mobileme.
16gb 3g here. worked fine until the 3.1 update.

Here is a list of the crashes I have had on my iPhone.Your crash reports are available on Macs in the following directory: Users/<yourname>/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/<youriphone>

There were very few crashes recorded until I upgraded to 3.1. I think in the last 5 days I have recorded more crashes than in the last 6 months.

Update for me, I did a Restore in iTunes of the phone and then recovered from my last backup. Not only did I have no coma's for the day, but the battery life is significantly better than it has been, the battery has yet to hit 20% after 14 hours of use and I typically have to plug in in the middle of the day to boost the battery.

It sounds like not everyone has tried the Restore since it hasn't worked for some people, but I would encourage you to at least try it.

I'm sure I don't need to explain the details of the problem. It's the same thing. Randomly "suspends" the phone. Hard reset required and has happened 4 times in the last 4 hours.

The only apps I have been using were Tweetie and possibly Safari/SMS.

Yet another case of random shut downs. No pattern to the behavior that I can detect. Also some other odd symptoms that showed up at the same time: apps that crash on launch, and notification buzzes going off when there aren't any new notifications.

Does any of you have the app AppBox Pro installed? Cause I deleted it this morning and restarted my iphone and I haven't have anymore crashes. Maybe os 3.1 + AppBox Pro = crash?.... Just a thought....

Looks like TUAW has picked up on this issue. Lets hope it gets out to the wider world and receives some publicity, then perhaps we get can a faster solution from Apple or at least some acknowledgement.

And Apple won't even allow us to downgrade to the more stable 3.0.1 software. Bummer. If they would at least allow a downgrade, then we could have stable iPhones until the next fix.

Apple, this is ridiculous. Acknowledge the problem! I am an Apple fan with many of your products. I want to know that you are working on this...I want the respect for you to acknowledge it before you mysteriously fix it in a minor update that does not list the issue.

I own many iPods, 3 Macs, and have owned each generation of iPhone: My wife has the 3GS I have the 3G. This will not bode well for my future business if you do not acknowledge the issue.

I'm not kidding...we, your customers, deserve an answer!

I wrote this on my 17' Unibody Mac. I earn my living on Windows and I love my Mac but I could choose to go back if this is how we can expect to be treated.
