Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I'm having this issue as well. I was going to call Apple tomorrow but if the hold time is that long maybe I'll wait.

This whole thing really irritates me. Its a minor issue, but it isn't some obscure one that came out of left field. Apple should have tested this better. On top of that Apple hasn't issued a press release, forum announcement, nothing. I wouldn't be half as upset if they would just give us an update on the situation.

    I have the same problem.
    The iPhone randomly shutdown.
Also, sometimes the battery is suddenly empty for no reason.

I will tag this topic to be notified of any new replies... I hope someone will respond quickly!

I can't use my phone anymore
The problem started exactly when 3.1 was installed on my iPhone 3G

Happening to me too. And it's definitely not a WiFi issue as I rarely have my WiFi turned on. I had 4 shutdowns yesterday, and another one overnight that completely drained my battery.

It looks like the fix mentioned by @MultiSync (turn off MobileMe calendars) worked for me too. Previously the phone was reaaalllly slow with many spontaneous reboots. I have a LOT of subscribed calendars and I think it was indeed trying to synch them (this is new behaviour) as it was asking me for authentication information for the calendars. I did a restore- probably not necessary in retrospect- and turned off the calendar syncing. Things seem okay now so far.

    Interesting.

My calendar is synced using this step by step: http://www.ianfernando.com/2008/sync-google-calendar-with-iphone-3g/
    NuevaSync with Google Calendar.

I will turn off this feature and see if it helps.

I have an appointment at my local Apple Store today to see what they can do. Maybe they'll know something. If they do, I'll post it here.

Have to add (previous post uneditable) that it was a difficult upgrade, on an XP with updated iTunes will lock at operation 13, progress 0% - multiple times
Had to switch to W 7 Enterprise without iTunes and install iTunes 9 then it restored the firmware flawlessly; switched back to XP and restored from backup - OK; synced - OK; restored from backup again; 99% progress bar full and stalled (1:30 AM). Rebooted, iPhone showing Restore Complete. All settings restored , less the icons placement.
    Sleeep.

Actually doesn't shut downs, is doing some task (what I ignore which is) which make it unresponsive and very slow to react. Yesterday, mine was unable to bring the screen on, but I left it for a while, like 30 mins, then I try again and it act normally. Maybe this task is working on is the MobileMe syncing.

Exactly the same issue with the lock-out and inability to wake from sleep. Have to press Sleep/Wake and Home buttons down until Apple logo appears. iPhone 3G since July 2008 without a hitch up till now with the 3.1 upgrade.
The phone is neither in sleep mode nor is it completely shut down...it just goes into a coma. Unfortunately callers hear a normal ringing tone when they try to call when phone is in coma mode, but the iPhone neither rings nor registers a missed call when finally woken again.
Tried several Restores, it works for a while, then the problem starts again.
    Come on Apple--FIX IT PLEASE!!

Well, it happened to me again but like someone said before I think its in a coma, not shut down. I couldn't get a response so as a test I called my iPhone from my office phone and it rang but the phone just sat there doing nothing. I left a message and after a few minutes the phone magically woke up!!! I knew it was back because the screen flashed and I was able to unlock and get it to work. The carrier info on the top left was originally blank and then it found a signal, so maybe it has something to with the network causing it to go into a coma. After another minute I got the indication I had a voicemail (the fake one I left) so at least that is coming through. Interesting.

Same issue here. happened 5 or 6 times in 2 days. only a hard reset or 5 minutes resolves the issue
