Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I have also experienced the blank screens that everyone refers to on my 8Gb 3G iphone.

I have disabled the Auto Lock and turned off Auto Brightness (which was not work effectively since the upgrade) and for two days now, not one blank screen. I am wondering if there are issues with the Power Management inside 3.1 - I guess we will have to wait and see.

So, I've done a complete restore and it seems a little better... only one crash yesterday. Most importantly, I called Apple and their tech was very helpful. He told me that he had heard about the problem and would escalate to engineering (I'm probably using the wrong lingo). He told me that my phone was still under warranty (9 more days!!!) and set up an appointment for me at the local Apple store. He also reminded me that I could still purchase AppleCare for $69.00 for a year's coverage if I wanted to...

If you haven't tried a full restore (ie. putting into DFU mode and running iTunes to restore as a new phone) give it a whirl. It may make things more stable until they release a fix. I've tried (MANY times) restoring to 3.0.1 but haven't had any success. I can't get iRecovery to work which seems to be a key component in the downgrade process on Macs.

I ranted earlier on this list complaining about Apple. I think they did mess up with this release but I am impressed by the service I've received once I contacted them directly. I'll post back here after my visit to the Genius Bar.

I haven't gotten the "coma" for the last 3 days after I did a complete restore and set up the phone from scratch (i.e. no restore from backup). However, just got one. I've tried all the various remedies suggested on here but nothing seems to help. It truly is random...

Maybe I have a solution...I understand that is a bug of Safari, maybe with introduction of new function about "phishing". So now before I took iPhone in stand-by always I close Safari, but before I close all the pages and also the last page, so Safari is really closed. After my test I've not more problems!!!
So maybe this will be a momentary solution...

Finally, I believe, I got what is happening. With this release apple should have changed the triggers for the temperature sensor shutdowns. Probably, because of the reports of iPhone explosions around the world. My phone was fine until the upgrade and then I saw 3 'comas', out of the blue, but after that I got really 3 calm days, until today, when the system entered in a coma twice in a row. I connected it to the laptop and got the messages from the console as soon as it went back. Here it is what caught my attention ...

Wed Sep 16 10:10:19 unknown com.apple.BTServer[1775] <Notice>: Warm reset complete!
    Wed Sep 16 10:10:19 unknown com.apple.BTServer[1775] <Notice>: Running /etc/bluetool/iPhone1,2.deepsleep.script.
Wed Sep 16 10:10:21 unknown com.apple.BTServer[1775] <Notice>: Warm Halt Entered!

It seems to me that it is entering in halt state because some configuration is telling the hardware is too warm.

The next time I got the error I will put the iPhone in front of the A/C unit to see if it comes back a few seconds later. Anyone who can test this will be very helpful to clear this up.

I updated to iTunes 9 on my MBP, then updated my iPhone 3G to 3.1, was 3.01.

I've never had problems before. But now I notice lag for a lot of operations.

And I've had the black screen, unresponsive iphone three or four times. Like others the iphone goes to Auto-Lock or I manually Lock it. Then the phone is unreponsive to button inputs and charging (never tried sync). Hard reset (Home and Lock button for X seconds) rebooted fine....

One more to the line. 3G iphone 16G and os 3.1 seem to be lethal combination. Really annoying. I have tried disable all syncing and push actions. No change. Disable phishing, maybe little less freezing but to be honest i am pretty sure it is just luck. Something major has broken down in sleep mode. Freezing happens after received text message, phone call or push. Freezing seem to be totally random.

After having some little difficulties and annoyances with snow leopard i am less than impressed with apple. Apples pc-mac ads seems funny to me in ways that apple did not mean them. I am considering strongly changing to another products. If this is really something that testers has reported to apple, it is really strange sense of quality to publish this update.

Ok, a few more observations. I was having this problem constantly, 5 or 6 times a day right after the update. I hadn't had a coma all weekend that I knew of but I wasn't as interested in what my phone was doing this weekend. Yesterday I had two in a row about 20 minutes apart. I didn't do a reboot, I decided to wait and see. In both instances the phone finally responded to the home button approximately 10 minutes after going comatose. In each instance I checked the memory usage in the App Box application. Right after coming out of the coma it showed virtually all of the memor in red as "wired". Anyone know what this is? After the second coma and waking up I did a hard reboot. When I checked the memory usage it showed almost none as "wired". Not sure what this means if anything. I haven't tried a complete restore because of all of the stories of phones being bricked by this update. Anyone heard anything positive from apple?

I finally got frustrated enough to call Apple support yesterday. I explained what was happening and I was told that I needed to take it to an Apple store so I scheduled an appointment for tomorrow where I assume I'll be getting a replacement phone. I really doubt the replacement will be any better unless it has the older software installed. I asked the Apple support technician on the phone if he had heard any reports of this issue and he claimed that I was the first person he had talked to with this problem. My home button has now started to become unresponsive along with the random shut-downs and I'm at a point where I can't take it any more. I will update with my results after my trip to the Apple store tomorrow.

My phone and my husband's phone (3G) have both randomly shut down multiples times DAILY after the update. I have done one restore already, and it hasn't helped AT ALL. My husband just got off the phone with Apple, and they recommend -- guess what?-- a full restore to fix this.

Sure, next time I have hours to spare to babysit the computer restoring the phone and re-installing my Apps and music, sure....
Besides, it didn't work the first time I did that.

Very frustrating. Hope you're listening, Apple. Don't make me regret buying these phones.

the guy i spoke with at Apple yesterday was aware of the problem, as it was happening with his own 3G as well. He said they are aware of these bugs in the new 3.1 software that people have been experiencing.

They were sending me a replacement 3G today as well.
