Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

When they have a reliable fix - it will be released, that is all you will get.
    Its their style.

Once that is out, then they will see which phones are broken and which just needed patching.

If it is broken, there may be a legal case to be had (in europe).
It has been sucessfully argued that an item that is fit for sale should not break down within 2 years.

I finally called AT&T and told them my problems with my phone shutting down randomly since installing 3.1 They then in turn told me that I needed to talk to Apple's iPhone support people and gave me a number to call. I then called Apple's iPhone support and told the person on the other end the same story. She said she had heard of this issue but that there was no solution to it at this point. She said that they thought that it might be some of their own software that has affected their hardware. She had me send her the crash file for the iPhone and then she set me up with a Genius Bar person at the closest Apple Store.

I went there and they brought my case number up with her notes in it and then swapped out my phone for a "new" one. Granted my phone is a 3G version and that the "new" phone was a refurbished one...but still. Then I went back home with the new iPhone which had 3.0.1 still installed and then updated the phone to 3.1 and then restored the phone from my backup and things are working just fine now. No mystery total shut-downs and weird things going on with my service and all of a sudden being without service in the 3G network randomly.

Anyway, thought I'd share my recent experience. I know it's not a solution though......

Exact same problem here. Though, so far, I've only had 1 completely hang/black screen (requiring a hard reset) on my iPhone 3G after upgrading to 3.1. The hard reset is not a quick process, so I'm glad I've only had one hang so far.

I've seen something like this several times as well. I couldn't figure out what was happening, I thought it was dead, but it eventually came back to life.

I got an email from apple asking for the 'device log.txt' that I captured during my two in a row 'comas'. I hope this helps them to figure out what is happening, and maybe get a gift also .

I am pretty confident that the 'coma' is coming from an inaccurate warm trigger, that could be changed in this version to prevent overheating.

I have an iPhone 3G, just upgraded to 3.1 a few days ago.

I just had a random shutdown 10 min ago. The first time this has ever happened to me ever. No apps were open. I went to go use phone and it didn't respond, so I check these forums and yikes! Had to hold both buttons to restart.

    Nice!

What was strange was mine was happing almost every hour, not just once or twice. So you could see how that would get annoying... Maybe... Just maybe I had a hardware issue? idk, I have a feeling software though.

Also forgot to say that I did update to iTunes 9 before I updated to 3.1. Just an FYI

Also, Just about when I would think I had it nailed and it would go away, say for 12 hours, right when I would think it woulden't do it again, it would do it...

Well at least Apple is watching this thread.
I'd expect a fix within 48 hrs after they get your log...

I can understand the warm sensors shutting it down and making it comatose, but why is the iphone getting warm during sleep in the first place? What network activity is going on that causes it to overheat?

The warm sensors thing may track. This should also be possible to loosely test - has anyone found comas to be more frequent when phones are in their pocket, vs out on tabletop? (I even wonder if this explains why no freezes while USB-plugged in).

I had thought I was noticing a pattern where my phone coma'd significantly more often while at work than home. Had been wondering if that was a network signal issue (poorer there), but the other big difference is my phone is in pocket all day at work, but rarely so at home.

My phone comas just as frequently on the table top as it does in my pocket - doesn't seem to be temperature related.

Maybe I'll start working inside the refrigerator.

Just wanted to say that I installed 3.1 on 9/11 and since then I have been having the random freezes. About 5 a day, sometimes more, sometimes less. This is getting crazy. I never know when it is frozen cause its in my pocket, so I dont know if Im missing calls or what. I hope Apple is reading these comments and has an update for us all by the end of the week or at least real soon. If anyone hears of an update on a fix from Apple would be great.

My iPhone seems to be settling down a bit. A few clean restores and set up as new seems to help, but of course it is difficult to replicate. Visiting the GB tomorrow after a very helpful (no sarcasm) Apple rep "talked me down." We'll see and will post back here tomorrow.

Add my name to this list. My phone won't come out of the blank (black screen) Need to do hard reboot every time. Has done it about 5 times in the past hour. Does this about 10-15 times a day. I have tried doing the restore and everything else mentioned in this thread. Very Very Annoying. I hope they are working on this and they get it fixed soon.
