Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Add me to the list of ****** off customers. My iPhone 3G, since updating to 3.1 likes to become a brick at random times. My favorite time was when my car died and I was in need of a WORKING cell phone. Thanks Apple!

Interesting about the 'Warm reset' line in the Device Log.txt file -- I just happened to capture one of my hard resets with the iphone config utility, and (among about a zillion other things) I do have something about 'warm reset':

Wed Sep 16 20:22:13 unknown /usr/libexec/ptpd[13] <Notice>: PTP interface bas been activated at high speed.
Wed Sep 16 20:22:13 unknown com.apple.BTServer[30] <Notice>: Warm reset complete!

I had also noticed today that I mainly get crashes when I'm out and about and walking around a lot. I didn't know what to make of it, except possibly that I'm not using the iphone much when it's a hectic day at work (luckily, I have a rock solid reliable T-mobile phone for mission critical stuff!), so maybe it was having more unoccupied time to crash unnoticed. (i.e., maybe waking it up often keeps it alive better). However, I'm sure it's also a lot warmer in my pocket while I'm running around, too. I realize this is how conspiracy theories start, but I guess one desparately latches on to lots of things when the mystery and frustration levels rise...

I too, have had this problem with my 3G, and it definitely is thermally related. If my phone is a coma, I can rest it on a cool surface and in a few minutes it will be responsive again. Very strange!

Given how intermittent the 3.1 coma's seem to be, it seems to be very easy (in the "other" thread) to be reporting a lot of false positives on 'fixes'.

Would be helpful to start a thread in which ONLY SOLUTIONS WHICH FAIL get posted. This may help in beating the non-clued in Apple tech support and genius folks to the punch in wasting everyone's time.

The rule for FAIL should be: if the phone coma's even once after the attempted fix, it's a FAIL.

From the main thread, failed fixes appear to include:

Replacing hardware but still having 3.1 installed (whether 3G or 3GS)
    Turning off autolock
    Turning off wifi
    Restoring via iTunes
    Turning off push

    etc.

    Adds?

Well so I thought maybe I got lucky, not a single crash or coma all day at home. Then I step out side the house drive for 10 minutes down the road, checked the phone when I got out the car and sure enough in a coma. (This was after a new install and no configured wifi, just 3G this time to test the wifi theory, so that's shot down).

I was starting to think it was heat related but not longer believe that as the phone was in an air conditioned car just like the house and not in my pocket. The warm back comes after the coma state, still leading me to believe it's some kind of cpu loop lockup that causes it to crash and burn.

I have a 3 month old 3G. Updated to 3.1 the day it came out. I get the coma several times a day.

Also noticed something else strange. I get random new email sounds, but when I check to see the message, nothing is there. These ghost email sounds happen 10-15 times a day. Anyone else getting this too?

Count me in as another victim of 3.1. I updated my iPhone the day 3.1 was released and was almost immediately greeted to a shutdown and hard reset. I now average about 2-3 hard lockups/resets a day. Very annoying, but even worse is that Apple is not providing any info on the issue. Not even a peep that they're are working on it. Apple is supposed to be the "reliable" platform with good customer service? What a bunch of crap. I didn't whine when my wifi stopped working at many places after the 3.0 update, but this is bad. Come on Apple, give us some feedback!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not having shutdowns as of yet. What I am having is problems with my battery. I usually go all day on battery with 30% left and now I have to charge at 6PM. *** Apple. Get it right the first time. Now we cant go back.

I am having the same problem since doing the update. In addition my battery is not lasting nearly as long as it did before the upgrade.

Count me in for another iPhone 3G that locks up randomly after the 3.1 update. Also my battery life has been DRASTICALLY reduced.

Same problem here.... random shut downs & comas, atrocious battery life (well, it was bad to begin with, now it's just unforgivable)...

For all the talk of "it just works" and the stuff we're fed about "build quality" I do wonder, is the iPhone OS dev team ********? Every time there's an update, I think, cool, new functionality! New stuff to play with! Maybe some improved stability!

It's so damned inconsistent. Sometimes battery life improves only to get hamstrung in a later update, or freezing issues get fixed only to reappear later. It's just not acceptable.

Seriously... I will have paid, over the course of two years, something like $2,700 for this phone. I think I deserve Apple's best and brightest on the case.

Unfortunately, they've moved on the next big thing, their 3GS, so I doubt we 3G people will have our prayers answered. Our Apple Dev Team seems incapable of developing software updates for THEIR products across THREE product lines - (original, 3G, 3GS). I have little doubt in my mind that the dev team are focused on getting the most out of the 3GS, which in turn is crapping out older hardware.

I loved my iPhone, I really did, but Apple... you're losing me, and fast.
