Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

After a few days of my phone working fine I thought I would do another test. I turned wifi back on and sure enough it died again. This time it wouldn't even hard reset and I had to plug it in to reset it. It said the battery was dead and when it came back on, even while on the charger, was draining the battery until I turned wifi off. I suspect one of two things. Either the radio is coming on and staying on or the battery charge level is reading incorrectly. It could be a combination of the two as well although it is most likely one thing. The temp issues I've read about likely mean that it is turning on hardware and leaving it on instead of terminating the process when it ends. It needs to be patched asap.

    this is ridiculous.

my parents tried calling me just now, and my phone didn't even ring.
i tried calling my parents, and my phone didn't even ring.

i would call apple and complain about this, but my phone won't call anyone.

    honestly?

i haven't ever been this frustrated with an object.
this is a dangerous situation--what if i can't make emergency calls, too?

i don't want to test whether or not i can call 911, and i hope i won't have to.

i highly recommend simply allowing customers to downgrade to os 3.0.
3.0 is obviously more functional, at least on a basic level, than 3.1.

if apple didn't supply unix-based operating systems, it's possible that i would have just completely switched to crunchbang (or insert linux distro of your choice) already.

p.s. --- i don't even have the option of choosing iPhone OS 3.1 under the OS drop down menu for this post.

    Count me in as well.

I have a one year old 3G, and I updated to 3.1 just a couple days ago. Ever since, I've had issues with it locking up, and the only thing that brings it back to life is a hard reset. Yesterday, I was using Zenbe Lists for my grocery list, and I must have had to reset it at least four or five times in a single shopping trip.

As for battery life, mine was cut in half after the PREVIOUS update. I don't use my phone particularly heavily, and my battery used to last me two days. Now it's nearly out by the end of the day. I tried turning push off, as I'd read on another forum, but it didn't help.

I suppose I'm #38,125 to read and/or comment on this. I (like so many others) use this thing for critical business communication. It's daily lock-ups make it worse than useless. At least if it's a brick I know I'm missing important calls and eMails! Mine sometimes gets going again on its own if I leave it be for a while, but I usually find that a hard reset is the best way to get it back. WHAT THE ** IS THE MATTER WITH APPLE THAT THEY HAVE NOT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM IN THIS FORUM, LET ALONE ANYWHERE THAT THE MORE TYPICAL iPHONE USER WILL SEE??????

2-3 lock ups per day here on my 3G. I would like to invite all those with problems to bring their iPhone to the apple store. Maybe apple will listen if the stores are overwhelmed with complaints.

One interesting note though. When connected to my car via bluetooth the phone locked up. Although locked up it was still connected to my car(Infiniti G35) via bluetooth even though it was locked up. SO it appears to still be "on" but non-functional. Only when did a hard reset did it disconnect. I couldn't make any calls during the lock up but the indicator on my cars screen showed battery life as it usually does when connected. When I did the hard reset it said "Joseph's iPhone disconnected" and reconnected after it restarted.

Having the exact same issues as everyone else! With some added Symptoms...

    16gb 3G purchased September 2008

-Phone has gone completely unresponsive - black screen; completely shut down, numerous times since upgrade to 3.1 on 09/09/09. Only way to get the phone to respond again is to do a hard reset. (Home + Power button)
-Battery life has drastically been reduced since 3.0.1
-EVERY call lasting longer than 5 minutes fails at some point - no apparent reason - always have full bars of 3g
-Phone will lose connection to the network on occasion at random locations - home, university etc - Zero Bars, No Service for about a minute.
-SMS is extremely laggy - "send" button becomes unresponsive on numerous occasions

Have tried the following to resolve the problem:
    -Reset All Settings
    -Reset Network Settings
    -Erase All Content and Settings
    -Restore - From 3.1 Backup - x 2
-Restore - Set up as New phone - x 2
-Deleted .ipsw file from mac - Restore - New Download of 3.1 - Set up as new phone - x 2
-DFU - Restore from back up / and as New phone - x 2

This is absolutely ridiculous, I barely have a useable/functioning phone!

(Phone has never been jailbroken - nor have I had any problems with it prior to 3.1)

if you call apple support and tell them about the problem, they will send you a brand new phone if you are still within the 1-year warranty.

HOWEVER, even with a brand new phone i have still encountered the random shutdowns.

most recently my phone was very warm when i noticed that it had gone into this "coma" mode so maybe that previous poster was correct when he said that they may have tried to change the kill-temperature range for the hardware

however, they really need to patch this, because it is absolutely ridiculous for such an expensive phone to be so unreliable. i may miss important calls because my phone has been "off" in my pocket for a long time.

I have the same problems with random shutdowns. I have a 3G 8GB bought in June 2009 (4 months old) and it has never been jailbreaked and I have only had some minor problems (mostly since 3.0 update) such as the lock up slider is frezing and I cant answer the phone. This bug with random shutdowns has happpened to me 4-5 times a day and this is NOT OK Apple, this does NOT work. Fix this ASAP.

Well I am another one to join the throng of severely disappointed phone users.
3.0 was not a bad release, quite stable and generally usable. I cant belive that during Apple's testing they did not encounter the same problems as we are all having. Mine is a 1st gen 3G about 7 months old whihc i know have to keep charged up in the office for fear of it going flat when I take my eyes of it. I have had at least 3 occasions where I have been called and it did not ring or even show a missed call, which before 3.1 never happened.
The most frustrating thing of course if the complete shutdown and only hard reseting brings it bask, this usually happens when I am running BeeJive.

Come on Apple, this is my second complaint today about your products today (first being about MobileMe web pages refreshing making emailing impossible), get your s*it together and get back to being the company we all worship you for. You are dangerously close to falling into the Microshaft league!!

    Hi Guys,
I just got off the phone with an apple tech who seemed reasonably knowledgeable. I'm 6 days out of warranty.
He explained that the upgrade process simply overlays the updated files, and to restore the device *_setting up as new_*. This would force iTunes to write a clean version of the OS to the device. If you restore from a backup, it'll just write the image of your device back (including the problematic system files.)
Then to get back all your data, restore from a backup. This should place only the data back onto the phone leaving the system files in tact.
I'm not sure how much of this I believe, but it's what was said. I'll try it and let you know if it works.
Let me know if this works for anyone else as well!

It doesn't seem to be a shutdown, but rather a run-away process.
The lock occurs, but then the phone becomes unresponsive. If you let it be for 5-10 minutes, it usually returns to normal behavior (or at least mine does). This might have a lot to do with just how ridiculously slow the OS has gotten in general on the 3G hardware.

Don't know if this'll help anyone else, but I've gone 3 days now without a crash after turning off notifications in the Settings. Had the eBay app that was set with that on. Turned off all notifications. Anyone else here using eBay app?

may not help anyone else... but may be worth a shot.

I am so disappointed that Apple has not said one word regarding this disastrous update.

I have been plagued by this problem and have tried everything. Nothing works so far!

We should all take our phone down to Apple's service centre and demand a refund so that they will take it more seriously.

As i mentioned in the last post, my shutdowns are (almost) gone. I experienced only once since i posted last time. i noticed after you press the power button, it takes almost a second or two for the phone to come to life. I can't explain why my shutdowns have become *less frequent*. if someone is have the same experience i d like to know about it. I removed all the movies and songs from ipod. (in case thats relevant) thank you
