Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

3G iPhone w/ 3.1 is causing lock ups at random times (about 5 times altogether so far), and I have to do a hard reboot to use the phone. This has never happened to me before with my iPhones or other software updates to the iPhone.

Have noticed other similar posts about turning off notifications. Following settings have helped me (2 days without random shutdown and counting):

    1) Notifications off
    2) Safari Anti-Phishing off
    3) deleted AP News app

Left Push on for Exchange/Mobile Me accounts, no problems so far.

Anyways, same here and it really *****. I hope they will fix it soon.

hi guys, new to the forum.

same issue here, 8GB iPhone 3G, never been jailbroken, hacked or any modification whatsoever. the random locking has happen twice whilst reading this article alone (read that as twice within 15 minutes) leaving today's total to 4 lock ups.

Considering going to the o2 store in my town and demanding a replacement (o2's usual response is to send the phone off for 'investigation' and then two weeks later call you up and demand a premium as the phone has 'water damage')

Ever since I have had my 3G (about a year and a half), it has gone squirrelly on me from time to time - spontaneous shut downs, spontaneous start ups, gratuitous offers of the red bar, etc. I have tried both soft and hard resets as well as restores to no avail.

Since I cannot relate this to anything, I am assuming that it must be sun spots, full moons, electronic biorhythms, voodoo spells, whatever. It seems that if I just let it have its little fit and wait it out, things clear up for awhile.

Freakin great.....Apple sends me a replacement 8gb 3G because I was having this random shutdown problem, and now the new 3G they sent me will not recognize wifi connections. I've tried 2 restores as well to no avail. This is maddening. The phone recognizes the IP address, it just will not pick up any wifi networks. I know others are having this problem with 3.1 as well (by reading through other threads/forums).

Thanks for the POS update apple.

I'm having the same issues. I upgraded my phone to the current release when it came out. I get random freezing and have to do a hard reboot. Additional I have to restart the phone about twice a day now to get service. I have full bars, 3G service and still I cannot send/receive calls/sms/emails due to this issue.

I added gPush about the same time as when I updated to 3.1, so I wondered which was causing the "comas". I turned off all the notifications (including gPush)and didn't have my phone lock up today at all. It was locking up 2 or 3 times a day before.

So until they fix this, I suppose keeping notifications off will have to do, but I REALLY hope they fix it soon. I like my notifications......

Comas seem to be becoming less frequent for me as well (not sure why, though I've been tinkering with random settings almost constantly since this started so there's almost no way to tell if I did anything). I went all yesterday afternoon and evening without one. Was starting to think that maybe it had somehow fixed itself, but then I had two comas within about 30 min of each other around 9pm. Will update later on how it fares throughout the day.

Same as everybody here. I have only got 2 random shut downs in 3 days, although they don't seem to be that random. Every time is has happened after I connected my iPhone to my computer, either to sync or not, then ejected it. The shut down happened when I plug the phone to the charger on the mains straight after. Twice exactly the same.

iPhone 3G, 3.1, comas are occasional (not frequent).

First time it happened was a few days after updating to 3.1. It was at about 1/2 charge when I closed apps and pressed sleep/wake to lock it. About half an hour later, I picked it up to check mail, and it was completely dead. Even when I plugged it into AC, I got nothing on screen--not even the message about needing to charge. An hour later, it was working.

Has happened a couple of times since, so not as frequent as most are reporting in this thread.
