Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I've been having the same problem. Does Apple know about this? Do they read these postings?

Yeah I don't think the platform matter. I'm running an Asus 2.53ghz core 2 duo with vista 32 bit.

Add me to the list also, 3G phone goes into a coma, completely dead.
The iPhone is primarily a phone. If a cellphone is unreliable, I'll go back to picking up messages at home or work.

Ggarthe, your instructions appear . . . daunting. i may give it a try but honestly I resent deeply the fact taht appls is forcing me to jump through all of these hoops simply to get a product to work that should well . . just work. Plus i'm on a PC and no idea if it even works the same. Thanks for posting the possible fix.

Im not taking any chances...I have not had ANY issues like this with any other cell phone Ive ever had, and this by far the most expensive phone Ive ever owned. No excuses. Apple has not even recognized this problem.

My wife will love her new Android because it wont end up with over 40,000 people viewing a thread on "mysterious shut downs" following a supposed software update.

Are you saying that because less than 50% of users cannot use their phone properly Apple should just act like there is no problem. Give me a break. No more Apple products for me, and I hope many here decide to do the same. Then and only then will Apple get the message.

I'm fairly confident someone at Apple pays attention to these forums. I am not confident that it's anyone important. :P

In all seriousness, the best way to get their attention is to post feedback in the form of a bug report.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

We, the users, all know there's a problem with 3.1 and we'd like the comfort of an acknowledgement from Apple that this is being fixed. We very well might not get that comfort, +regardless of whether or not they are actually working on a fix+. Take it for granted that they are working on a fix and that 3.1.1 will be out soon (afterall software is their job), but continue being responsible and helpful users and provide them with feedback about this issue via all available channels. This includes the feedback page listed above, these forums, calling & speaking w/ Apple support, Genius visits, etc.

I thought this issue was something specific to my phone - some sort of loose connection or something that was powering the phone off when in the "wrong" position. It is comforting to know that my problem is shared by quite a few others. What I find most infuriating is not so much the existence of the bug, but that Apple does not even seem to acknowledge it as an issue yet. My search of support yielding not a word about it. I see posts going back to September 10. Today is September 17. A week of troubles and not even so much as a "We're looking into it". Let's see...annoying bug released through update and the company doesn't acknowledge the issue...Sounds like the sort of thing that happens to John Hodgman on the Apple ads. This isn't supposed to happen to the cool guys with the Apple stuff. Maybe we aren't so cool after all.

I updated 2 3g Iphones. The third one is my daughter's at college and I told her NOT to update her Iphone 3G! I too have had random Iphone coma. It will wake itself back up after a while. I did a complete reset, but it has gone into a coma once after that. Yesterday, it seemed to have lost the cell service. It showed 4 bars and all fine, but it could not get out a text or receive a call. I restarted it, that fixed it. Then my sons updated ( screwed up ) Iphone did the same thing. He was hours late and I was very worried as he would not respond to text or calls. We finally traced him down with a landline. And sure enough, his phone would not send or receive texts or calls, but looked fine. He powered it down and powered it back up, and all of my text messages came through. I am so ****** off about this!! These phones have been the best I have ever owned. Now I do not trust them at all! Apple!! Get this fixed!!!!

Same issues here with iPhone 3G 8GB SW update 3.1
    1. iPhone goes into coma state. About 8 times so far.
    2. Battery live is significantly shorter than before
    3. iPhone feels warmer

I saw *Palm Pre's* ad yesterday on television where they were focusing on their ability to run multiple applications on their phones. I'm now wondering when will they focus on the fact that their phones wake up after going into sleep mode. Maybe they are reading Apple support's discussion board.

Does Apple always remove posts critical of them on these forums? Someone started a thread about unsatisfied customers after the 3.1 update that is now mysteriously gone. Thats it Apple just ignore them and they will go away....

What a joke...as i said before lets hit them were it hurts, in the wallet. The 3GS I was planning on buying my wife for Christmas just turned into a GOOGLE ANDROID. Not paying a premium for a phone when the company cant even release properly tested updates.

    CYA Apple! Another customer lost.

Iphone 3G unusable after the update. Can't open apps, can't check email, can't receive calls while another application is running. The phone freezes. Must reboot the device constantly. Battery life is worse than the original battery life (before they offered the update that made it reasonable).

    I dub this a Techno-Travesty.

Another thing to consider is that most Apple employees also have and use iPhones, so there is a good chance that a significant number of them are also experiencing this problem. I am confident that by providing feedback and reporting the bugs to Apple, and update/fix will not be too far away. I have owned an iPhone since the original, and in my experience, Apple is very good about fixing bugs.

The moderator will remove post that violate the board agreement. If it doesn't have to do with a problem they are having and they are just ******** about how unsatisfied they are it will get removed. They have another place you can tell them that. These boards are for people having issues not a ***** session.
