Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Count me in. I upgraded to 3.1 last night. My iPhone has been fine up until a few minutes ago. I went to use it and it's dead.

This is my 3rd iPhone. First one was replaced due to faulty vibrate switch and the second one due to no Wi-Fi after 3.0 upgrade. Now this issue.

Apple really needs to get their act together. They're releasing stuff that doesn't work which never used to be the case. I'm really ****** about this now.

Count me in, thought my 3G phone was on its way out until I saw this thread. Has been shutting down since 3.1 update, need to hold down to master reset to cure. Also, no data to back this up, the OS appears to have slowed down again, keep getting slow operations when using the ipod application. The genius mix thing appears to be the worst!

Will log a defect report at feedback page.

Nothing new figured I'd add myself to the list.

I had a slight issue installing 3.1 (had to do 1 restore), but everything was running fine yesterday until the evening. I had 1 shut down last night and another overnight.

I had charged my battery full and it was drained by this morning. I was not on WiFi nor do I have MobileMe.

The only thing I have noticed is that the issue goes away when my phone is operating off direct power and not battery, although this defeats the purpose of a mobile phone.

Add my name to the list too. It's happened to me twice now. First time I was browsing in Safari and locked the phone using the top button. Second time I was listening to music and paused the music using the button on my headset. When I came to use it again a few mins later it was locked hard. Plugging it into the power doesn't elicit a response either. All this within 24 hours of the 3.1 update. I've had this iPhone for over a year and it's never done this before.

I don't have my MobileMe calendars enabled, so that's not the cause for me.

I could kick myself. I hardly ever jump on an update from Apple because of things like this, and this time I got tempted by the new features. Stupid me!

Neat test. I'll try that myself.

Odd man out, I guess. Updated to 3.1 first day, no problems since then. Heavy usage with AT&T navigator, iPod function, screen on continuously as well as normal manual and self lock after 1 minute, no lockups. I sync MobileMe calendars, and email, too. No abnormal power drains.

Count me in. Had 5 total shutdowns yesterday, did a restore, only had one after. Seemed to help a bit. I was chalking it up to a bad 3rd-party data cable from Hong Kong. Hrm.

Add me to the list as well. APPLE FIX IT!

I've had numerous shutdowns on my 3G, not as many since a full restore, but they are still there. I've also had my phone ring for a call and text messages while the vibrate button was on!!!

    3.1 is broken!!

Add me to the list... Only one shutdown today - expecting more based on what I read here.

Strangely though, my battery life is much better than it was with 3.0.1

Had the same issue with the phone seeming to shut down. It is unresponsive to home or power button presses and switching to silent mode doesn't cause the phone to vibrate. Seemingly dead.

When I connect it to my macBook, there is no response either, however when I disconnect it, the phone comes back to life and the Mac throws out the device removed before ejecting error and it continues normal operation.

A side note when I upgraded to 3.1, the phone restarted into recovery mode and I had to do a complete restore to upgrade. So this is more or less on a clean install.

Add me to the list. It just happened to me this morning. Totally unresponsive until I did a hard reset. Nothing worse than being worried about your phone randomly turning itself off.

Count me, rather my wife, in as well. She just called me from a land line saying her 3G was dead as a door nail. She contacted AT&T and I assume they had her do a reset.
For my own information and understanding how do you perform the "hard reset" step?

    Add me to the list.

Happens both with WiFi connections and 3G connections.

I also have one calendar subscription and use MobileMe.

hold the sleep/wake button and the home button down for a few seconds until you see the apple logo

Ok, it just happened to me again. I'm sitting here at work and I decided to check my phone around 12:15 so I hit the home button and nothing. Coma mode. Instead of doing a hard reset I was patient and kept hitting the home button about every 30 seconds to see if it would wake up. Around 12:18 it came back!! So something is causing the phone to just hang and not respond to any input for a few minutes. My Wi-Fi is on but not connected and I have a few push services running along with bluetooth.
