Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Well, due to my work schedule I was unable to get to the Apple store at my appointed time so I decided not to waste gas driving there only to be turned away. I instead called the Apple store, waited on hold for 30 minutes, and then asked one of the reps there about the problems I was having. I told him I didn't want to waste my time driving there only to get a new phone with the same problems.

He told me that I needed to do yet ANOTHER restore but this time to setup the phone as a 'new iPhone' instead of restoring it from a backup. He claimed that this was the only 'fix' that they had right now and that these problems were not common. I told him that maybe he should read all of the posts on the Apple support forums to see how common it really is. So now I'm even more aggravated because I'm having to do another restore, then I'll have to setup my phone and configure everything from scratch. I should NOT have to reconfigure my phone just because Apple releases new software. WHERE IS THE FIX APPLE?!

I didn't know that there are so many issues with the new update until I saw a poll on Engadget.com about it. I had just been dealing with it.

Anyways I also have seen issues with the phone just locking up and nothing works for a while. I have had to reset the phone a few times now.

I also had the phone go into a dead mode. It was on and then the screen turned off. I pressed the power and home button and nothing happened. I though the battery had drained because it complained about 20% left just a few minutes before. Anyways I thought it was drained and about 10 minutes later the phone just turned back on by itself and it was working again.

I have had two more issues. I notice that my AT&T network bars go from full to nothing randomly. Also yesterday while doing a sync with iTunes complained that I needed to authorize the machine or all my apps would be delete it. Meanwhile I had synced half hour earlier with no problems.

My phone - 3G - would randomly not be able to accept or make calls.

I turned off wifi and this has not happened in two days. It appears to be related to the wifi.

    Hope that helps.

I am a Consultant Surgeon and I use my iPhone for when I am on call.

The random shutdowns are a disaster as I now cannot be assured to be contactable.

Thanks God for my Sony Ericsson as a back up.

    C'mon Apple sort it out!

Posted this in another thread, but may as well post it here as well.

I've been having this issue as well. I am a developer, and was running the betas for 3.1 prior to upgrading to the final version, and it was with the final beta that I started experiencing the issue. This seems like the sort of bug Apple should have caught and fixed during the beta. I had hoped the upgrade would have fixed the bug, but clearly this isn't the case.

It's disappointing Apple hasn't said a word on this topic.

This problem better be fixed quick unlike the wifi fiasco. This literally could
cost lives as people rely on cell phones instead of landline .
A doctor misses a important emergency call,a car accident victim cant call out, etc.

Apple you better really fix this one quick.I know your taking your time on the wifi
problem but somebody has a problem expect some big reverberations.

I have had the same problems as everyone else on my 3G 16GB iPhone, I have posted feedback to Apple the same day I confirmed I was having the same issue, how many of you have done the same? Its the only way that you can officially notify Apple of this issue .

Please post feedback to Apple as has been said many times in this thread, Apple will not take a forum post as official notification of your problem!

Im afriad thats what it might take for Apple to recognize this issue. Someone misses a life critical phone call, or cannot call for help due to their phone going comatose randomly, and it makes front page news that Apple's botched software contributed to a loss of life.

I too have the dreaded 3.1 "coma" but for the past two days they're disappeared. This is what I did I'm not sure if it helped or if I'm just lucky.

    Turn off push
    Turn off notification
    Delete mobile me app
    Turn off auto lock
Leave a blank page in safari open (open a new page close all others).

I know i probably jinxed myself and will get another "coma" when I click post.

Actually, there are quite a few people with 3GS with same problem. So, it is not confined to 3G. Which makes me wonder, is there anyone with an original iPhone with similar problem?

Also, I, with 3G, only had one shutdown(knock on wood) since the update came out.
And, I do remember that it was in my pocket and was VERY warm.

When mine has been having this issue the iPhone has been at room temp from sitting on my desk here at work. So, the phone was not very warm at all.

I think there must be multiple reasons or triggers for the problems because I did a wipe and install and have not even configured wifi this time and it still happens.

For a while I thought it was wifi, then bluetooth, then location services then 3rd party apps, but I've tried every configuration on the device I can think of and it still happens randomly. I'm even starting to wonder if it could be that AT&T's service roll out is contributing to the problem as it seems to happen more when I'm moving around and probably switching cell towers.
