Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

WOW, and I thought it was just me!! It has happened several times each day since the update. I JUST reset it this minute and decided to look here for help.

    Is there a fix?

I just wanted to chime in. I read about 20 of these messages and I seem to be experiencing the same problem since 3.1, i.e. at least once a day (it seems), my phone will not come back to life without holding the power and square buttons down for 10 seconds to reset it. It does appear that if I catch it before the battery is completely dead, the phone is awfully warm, like it is really busy doing something. Sometimes when I restart it the battery is dead as if it worked really hard on something until the battery drained and it shut off.

Anyone else notice that their phone was overly warm when it wouldn't wake up?

Trying this method to see if I get my old firmware back. Interested to see what happens, this leads me to assume the original firmware that shipped on the unit is permanently stored on ROM somewhere? But is the base band separate and will be rolled back as well?

OMG im glad i looked on here i was upset thinking this is the Dev teams fault...after i installed the updated jailbreak my phone started doing this crap too at least now i can confirm that it has nothing to do with the jailbreak...so LAME! On a positive note...im glad i waited on the DEV team to work on the update for 3.1, i didnt loose my baseband so ill be downgrading to 3.0 tonight and will have my iphone back to normal...ill be waiting on a fix from apple then jailbreaking again after the Dev team comes up with an upgrade.
if you didnt wait for the jailbreak or choose not to jailbreak im assuming your SOL and will have to wait on a fix from apple. that *****!

Ok, some but probably not all of us! have posted feedback to Apple, it would be of enormous benefit to all with problems if from now on when you post here you also confirm whether you have also posted feedback to apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

At least we will know how many official notifications Apple have received! And therefore how much of a stiff ignoring they are giving this issue.

    Peace!

@nikey33: Many thanks for the most constructive feedback. Thanks to your guidance, I did send the following feedback to Apple. I must say, however, that I lack your patience and magnanimity on this kind of obvious recurring issue:

Count me as one of the - apparent - many thousand users of your product who is experiencing shut downs with the 3.1 update. I have to do a hard reboot of the phone to get it to work.

At this juncture I have to add to the chorus: "Was there any testing done on this or did you expect me to serve as an unpaid QA resource?" This kind of obvious, replicable defect is unacceptable for the money I'm paying AT&T and you!

This is unacceptable for the premium price we all paid for these phones.. Ive been missing calls all day long and my phone is virtually unusable.

For those reading this, dont buy an Apple product unless you are prepared to deal with issues like this which Apple will not even recognize as a problem.

Will for sure be the last Apple product I buy.

    iPhone OS 3.1:
My iphone 3G freezes randomly about 2 times a day since OS 3.1. It reboots (without PIN request) when pressing on/off and home botton for 15 seconds or by random too. Horror!!! APPLE PLEASE DO FIX THIS NIGHTMARE BUG!!! I was in the Apple store in Zuerich and they didn’t know about this problem (but wanted to sell another phone), but the other customers did!!! Shame for you Apple!
    Kind regards!

Just got off the phone with apple. This time a less than 5 minute wait. The tech was very polite and assured me that he was 100% positive that all would be made right in the world if I simply would restore it as new. I asked what would happen if it truly bricked my phone this time, I was assure that it just wouldn't be possible for a non-hacked phone to be bricked by an os update. I also learned:
#1. that it is impossible to remove the 3.1 software from itunes and download a fresh copy. I would literally have to re-install itunes.
#2. that is is utterly impossible that I got a bad copy of the os because it has a built in verification that wouldn't allow it to update if the os was fouled for whatever reason
#3. That I was being done a favor being allowed to talk with the tech since I didn't qualify for phone support any longer.

I will do the restore as new as recommended and see if it fixes it. I have little hope because so many on this list have tried it multiple times to no avail. We shall see.

Ok you are shouting "APPLE PLEASE DO FIX THIS NIGHTMARE BUG!!!"

Have you actually given Apple an official notification of your issue buy posting feedback to them?

Sorry to go on about this but if you fail to _*officially tell Apple*_ they will only be stimulated to fix this issue by the number of official complaints/feedback they have received, I can almost guarantee that this thread could have a thousand posts but if none of the complainants tell Apple by official means it will be a side issue to them, you need to PUSH hard and the first step is using using the feedback system at:

    Good Luck

    Hey all,

I was having the same issue with random shutdowns of my 3G. I called Apple support last Sunday. They said that hadn't seen any widespread issues. They asked me to take the phone to an Apple store. I did that on Sunday. They ran diagnostics on it and, believe it or not, the diags came back clean... No resets, no high temps, no battery issues.

Since I had an Apple care contract and no apparent physical issues with the phone, they replaced the phone. But, they were somewhat unconvinced of an issue.

The phone performed flawlessly prior to the 3.1 upgrade. After the upgrade, the phone, on standby, would completely drain the battery in a matter of a 3-4 hours. It would become very warm to the touch. It would also shutdown randomly.

For the record however, the replacement 3G is working fine with 3.1 installed. Certainly a head scratcher.

I upgraded to 3.01 a few days ago without any trouble, and now my phone is frozen on the low battery screen when I plug it into the charger - otherwise, it's dead. When I try to restart it, the screen goes blank like if it's going to reset, but then it just goes back to the low battery screen. I can't get phone calls or anything...very, very frustrating!

Because a re-boot won't fix it, I don't know what else to do. When I get home, I will try to plug it into my computer and see if that does anything to fix it, but I'm not holding my breath.

I am experiencing the same 'coma' bug reported by many others in this thread.

I have submitted an official report via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html
