Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Okay I have read all 44 pages and I have to add my experience. I have a 16gb 3g. I have Tmobile so 2 days ago when the jailbreak came out I upgraded to 3.1. I have to say i have not had any problems described here. My battery lasts longer, everything seems faster, and not once has my phone gotten hot. I have used safari, wifi , bluetooth(headphones), apps etc. It has always woken up after sleep.

So I am wondering if this is maybe a At&t issue sending stuff to the phone that is causing the phone to go into a processing loop?

also with the jailbreak, I am not upgraded to the new baseband. Maybe the new upgraded baseband has issues?
Just wondering if anyone else out there is jailbroken, on another carrier and not having problems on 3.1.
This could help narrow down issues for those in this forum

i agree with you, i have had this problem twice now, but i didnt come on here moaning about it becuase its obviously a firmware bug with some iphones so i immediately sent feedback, it baffles me why people just complain and don't actually tell apple...

It's happening in Poland also. So it's not AT&T.

i completely agree with you re the testing apple does, but from being on here a couple of yrs and having my posts removed because i have dared complain about apple and the lack of testing, i gave up the rants as you get removed, if you complain about apple u will get removed, so now i have to have patience and listen to the people on here who apparently have no problems and love telling us how wonderful apple is etc, i now have to bite my tongue..so thats why i say send feedback it seems its all we are allowed to do on here...annoying but bl@@dy true

    I'll try posting this again...

The following instructions are very time consuming (up to 2 hours or more in some cases), requires erasing your phone (so save anything important, and DO NOT rely on the iTunes backup for retrieving the data), and only work on Macs (I don't know or have Windoze procedures for this, so don't ask).

    1. Plug in your iPhone to an AC outlet (not your computer) and go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content and Settings. This will take some time. It will also take the phone back to factory settings, just as it was when it came out of the box, so if you have a 3G, that will most likely mean OS 2.x. Once you've started this process, set the phone aside.

    2. On your Mac, navigate to your Home folder Mac HD>Users>Your Home Folder, from there navigate to Library>iTunes>iPhone Software Updates. In there you will see a file who's name will be SIMILAR to iPhone1,23.1_7C144Restore.ipsw. Move this file to the trash and delete it.

    3. Once your phone has completed the erase/reset process, connect it to your Mac. When iTunes opens and your phone shows up, click the "Check for update" button. This will download a NEW copy of the 3.1 update from Apples servers.

    4. Once the download is complete and iTunes has updated your phone with the fresh copy of the 3.1 update you've just downloaded, it will be time to set up your phone. DO NOT RESTORE FROM BACKUP!!!! Restoring from backup will most likely restore the problem you're trying to get rid of! Now, when iTunes gives you the option, you want to SET UP AS A NEW PHONE. Once that is complete, re-sync your data. Again, NOT FROM BACKUP.

This has resolved many issues for most of the people that used this restore method, but it's not a guarantee. The reason behind these steps is that performing a basic restore does not remove the 3.1 firmware currently installed on your phone, which may have been corrupted during the installation nor does it remove the copy of the 3.1 firmware package on your Mac which may also have been corrupted during the download. Further reasoning behind this is that these steps take your phone back to a 2.x version of iPhone OS (if you have a 3G), and you'll be upgrading from 2.x directly to 3.1, bypassing all of the incremental updates in between (2.1, 2.2, 2.2.1, 3.0, 3.0.1, etc...). If someone has success with this (I did after problems when moving up from 2.2.1 to 3.0), please report back so that others will feel more comfortable performing such a daunting task.

If it's any consolation, I received not only an email from an Apple HelpDesk representative, but a phone call directly from Cupertino from the iPhone Engineering team. I spent about an hour of my time answering questions about the specific shutdown/freezing behavior we all have been experiencing. So it's good to know they are proactively viewing these discussion boards. I've since emailed them various log files to help troubleshoot the issue. Hopefully, they contact enough people and get enough information to track down the problem and develop and deliver a solution to us all.

Note: I am not affiliated with Apple in any way. I'm an iPhone user just like all of you. Why they reached out to me, I don't know. Your guess is as good as mine. I just hope I gave them enough information to find a solution. And find one quickly because a few minutes after hanging up with them, my phone froze.

    Same issue for me.
While i was updating to 3.1 iTunes said that there have been an error, so the update coud not be completed and i had to restore. So i did that.
But after updating to 3.1 iPhone randomly shuts down.
More: sometimes battery charge icon said full in upper right, then after a few minutes appears the red 20% battery emergency.
Is there a way to go back to 3.0?

i posted in another thread, thought that was the main one until i noticed this one. i'm on a 3GS and have had these intermittent periods where the phone is unresponsive; do not know if i can receive calls during that time, but i just now received 2 brand new voicemails without getting a missed call. it's possible i had no signal, but i was on a freeway where i've never noticed a signal drop before. infuriating, now that i know i can't rely on my phone to wake me up or be able to make calls when i need it

#1. that it is impossible to remove the 3.1 software from itunes and download a fresh copy. I would literally have to re-install itunes.

Thats a lie. It's removable from Macs, no reason it shouldn't be from windoze either.

    Headers22 wrote:
#2. that is is utterly impossible that I got a bad copy of the os because it has a built in verification that wouldn't allow it to update if the os was fouled for whatever reason

Thats also a lie. Does the OS X disc verification prevent you from getting a fouled up installation? No it doesn't, and the same applies here.

I just sent Apple feedback. Hopefully enough people will do the same and they'll actually do something about this...
