Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Same thing happening to mine after i updated to 3.1 did a total restore to try and sort the problem out with no joy locks up one or twice a day seem to get quite hot as well, a hard reset is the only way to recover normal operations.

so here is my response to apple's insufficient customer service

Hi, i have been having issues with my phone for about a week now. the phone will not wake up when it is asleep sometimes, about twice a day. all the physical buttons on the device will be unresponsive (power, home, volume, vibrate). the only way to wake the device up is to reset it using the power and home buttons. i know others have experienced this issue and you can see all their posts here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2152619&tstart=0, on YOUR support forum. we all believe it has something to do with your great new 3.1 software update. it is hard for us to remedy this issue ourselves because you make it harder for us to downgrade to the more stable 3.0.1 software. i would also like to say that i have been to 2 apple stores 4 times in the last 3 days with this problem and i have done everything your apple GENIUSES told me to do with no avail, one even opened it up and checked for loose connections and my device looked fine. i feel the customer service of these geniuses are not as good as i believe they should be. one more thing i would like to add is that i purchased my phone in june and i also have the apple care plan so i am still under warranty.

Add me to the list of dissatisfied customers. I'm resetting my iPhone 3-4 times a day since 3.1.

A couple of reassuring words along the lines of "we're working on it" would be enough to ease my mind.

hey guys i have also left a feed back. heres a copy of my dismayed feedback to apple:

the 3.1 epidemic is also felt here in the philippines......cmon apple whats up with that?? ive been monitoring the threads since sept 13 and still no sign from apple. i just would like to make it clear that ive been an apple user since 2002. i have been running my digital studio on apple computers running on pro tools...i have used and have owned a lot of ipods and 3 i phones already...whats happening? i am now scared to even update my 3 month old mac book. there are a lot of people on ur thread who are suffering and loosing business because of this $&^% up. i am upset and dismayed with apple. i have BEEN a proud apple user which turned into dismay. heres the thread...if ever you have plans and if the apple CARE is really believable.

Hate to quote myself but please keep the bug reports flowing into Apple. Be as +constructive and thorough+ as possible.

well, after trying your method i'm still extremely unhappy. the whole process failed at step 2: deleting all data from the phone did not reset the firmware to 3.0 (this is the one that came with it), it's still 3.1.

Agree w/ Frances Robles. My iPhone 3G gets really warm, like it's been left on but the screen is asleep and won't come back on until I do the reset maneuver. The functions have been slowing down since the 3.1 update too.

Thanks for that, the rest of the people who are posting on this thread need to understand that they can write pages and pages here but it counts for ABSOLUTELY ZERO unless they back it up by posting feedback to Apple at:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

The more that do this the greater that pressure will bear upon Apple to fix this and it MAY(?) make Apple actually post some acknowledgement of the issue which would go a LONG WAY (Are you listening Apple?) to placate in some part peoples frustration on this issue.

I'm really surprised that Apple haven't really done much to acknowledge the problem. Even a forum sticky forum post would help. I'm guessing they are doing something about it, altho knowing this would at least put people at ease.

What I don't understand is why can't they just apologise that there is an error and they are trying to fix it. I'm sure 95% of iphone/apple customers would accept it and just wait for an update rather than having Masses of complaints. Having looked at a fair few comments here it seems that most people would be grateful that something is being done whether it takes days or maybe a week.

The even more annoying thing I guess is that this Download to 3.1 is still available and still kinda encouraged so people with 3G phones will "unknowingly" upgrade.

I upgraded almost a week after it came out. That was simply down to laziness. I wasn't really expecting a major bug to fall through for a semi minor upgrade.

I just hope the fix it soon.

I am also surprised at Apple's failure to acknowledge this issue. My phone shuts down at least twice a day, every day. Interestingly, after discovering the forums (which I had to find via Google), and finding that there are 654 replies on this topic, I set up a support call. The support tech SAID he didn't know about the issue... and instructed me to restore my phone (which, according to many folks on here, does not work) AND told me that the apple forums are not an official (discussions.apple.com - hmmmmm) Apple site. I will also post this on the Apple feedback page, hoping that if enough folks speak up, Apple may see that this is a real bug that needs to be FIXED and ACKNOWLEDGED.
