Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

    Honestly I would hold AT&T partially accountable for this bad firmware. I really believe that Apple was not ready to release 3.1, but were forced to do prematurely to meet AT&T's delayed MMS roll out.

    My 3G was nearly completely useless with the same problems as everyone else. I manages to turn of the anti-fraud option for Safari in the main settings, and rebooted. Everything is back to normal. Very easy to see if it helps you!

    Never posted here before, but I'm experiencing A LOT of issues regarding the 3.1 update as well on my 3g.

    Prior to the 3.0 update, I had NO problems with the phone whatsoever.

    As of the 3.1 update, these are the issues I am now currently dealing with-

    1- Phone "locks" and will not unlock
    2- Battery life is half as long as before update under the same usage
    3- Cellular network randomly shutting off, unable to make/receive calls unless iphone is rebooted
    4- Applications are freezing consistently
    5- Applications open and close SLOWLY

    Fun times. In all fairness, Apple is probably long overdue for this type of disaster and hopefully will fix it soon. Though I was ready to take my two month old phone in to the Apple store for replacement, it seems that clearly these issues are not device specific.

    Apple monitors these threads; I would hope 47 pages would be considered as feedback.

    Count me also in this long list.
    The best I could do so far was:

    1) Disable wifi
    2) Disable fraud warnings in Safari prefs
    3) Never press Stand by, let the phone go to standby itself

    all these seems to help, but occasionally can fail again. If happens, don't force the reboot right away. In most of cases you have to wait a few minutes and the iPhone will turn on normally.

    you can also count me in with this issue.
    I am running a hotel business where every call is important, i.e. if I dont pick up the phone, the prospective customer moves on and I loose money.
    The shutdowns happened three times within the last two days and everytime when an incoming call was taking place. What good is an Iphone, if it is not able to take calls without crashing?

    I agree Apple probably in some way monitor these threads but its not the official way of notifying Apple of an issue. This is why I requested in an earlier post that when people who are posting here who have experienced this problem specify whether they have posted official feedback at

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

    This is the only way we can know how many official notifications Apple have been sent, I am really frustrated by the problem as are all who have posted here, my iphone is out of warranty so a replacement from Apple is not going to happen, which is why I keep banging on to everyone who has this problem to post feedback and apply pressure to get this fixed asap.

    Please, post feedback at

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

    It takes 2 minutes and you at least have the knowledge that you have posted your problem using the official method.

    Hope everyone and my problems are sorted quickly!

    Since updating to 3.1, my Iphone 3G has frozen twice and I have had WiFi connection issues, It also removed my 3G data network connection settings. Ive also noticed that it has become very sluggish and even when I'm listening to music, there are delays when selecting other songs, it hangs alot. hope this gets sorted soon.

    I had problems after 3.1. I took the advice I found buried on this list and basically turned off "auto-lock" (by setting it to 5 minutes rather than 1, and I always turn it off myself in less than 5 minutes). I also always have it at the OS level and not in an application when I turn it off (sleep, basically). Since then it has not crashed at all. I have never shut down wifi.

    I'm sure Apple will have a fix soon, but for now this is helping me cope.

    Hi all,

    I don't have this problem and my Iphone is fully up-to-date OS wise.

    Here's some info.....perhaps it will help tie this problem down.

    My location = Scotland, UK.
    Iphone 3G 16gb
    Version = 3.1 (7C144)
    Carrier = O2 5.0
    Model = MB496B

    I use wifi, SMS, MMS, 3G, bluetooth, GPS all very regularly.
    Phone is full of paid apps, free apps, music, videos etc etc.
    My email setup is via Exchange to my work, so I'm syncing emails.

    Ian.

    Count me in with both 3G and 3GS phones using 3.1 update. Just got the new 3GS and it hangs in standby mode. Not as much as my old 3G one so it's still an improvement. And btw, what can I do with a 3G phone that your operator won't unlock?

    As always, YMMV, but:

    This appears to be bursts of 100% user-land (as opposed to system) CPU use (hence the poor battery life) as the result of something that doesn't get stopped even during a two-finger reset. Whatever it is DOES seem to get stopped (at least in my experience) when either a) the phone runs completely out of battery or b) the phone recognises a newly inserted SIM (and maybe a few other circumstances?).

    Try the following:

    * Power off the iPhone as normal
    * Remove the SIM card
    * Power on the iPhone
    * Use the phone (unlock it, faff about for a bit with it saying 'No SIM')
    * Power off the iPhone as normal
    * Re-insert the SIM
    * Power on the iPhone
    * See what happens.

    Hope this helps people - it's working really smoothly for me since I did this.

    My 3G iPhone hasn't shutdown (to my knowledge) since Monday. It's been working fine all week. How does it go from random shutdowns to being ok - without any software updates? I'm using it just like I do everyday.

    I did not try any of the suggestions on shutting features or timeouts off.

    Odd. It's a good odd.
