Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

For me it is completely random, it has happened almost every day for the last 2 weeks sometimes up to 3 times a day. there are maybe one or two days where I don't think it did happen.

It happened this morning, I got a notification, screen turned on, I hit the sleep button, and then maybe 30 seconds to a minute later I went to turn it on to check something and it wouldn't, I had to hold power and home buttons for about 10 seconds to power on the phone.

Ggarthe, it helped until this morning. (at least the alarm woke me on time) On my way to a breakfast meeting waiting on instructions via text on where to park and the phone froze again. Wouldn't respond to any input, I quickly did a hard re-boot and it worked.

Last night, I did a complete restore as new with a fresh copy of the os, I didn't sync anything from the old phone. Except that I did archive my contacts and restored those from an online archive service. I set up everything from new. The only thing from your instructions that I didn't do was the "Nuke phone" option at the beginning. I'm calling apple back with the case number. They said that if I didn't work they would give me a new phone if I paid the appropriate fees. I'm very disappointed in apple with this update and their continued insistance that it had nothing to do with this problem.

Ok just got off the phone with apple. (again) At first they didn't want to talk with me because I was outside the 90 days of free phone support, but finally they relented and deigned to speak with me. They now believe it is a "hardware issue" since a restore as new didn't fix it. They want to try to repair it of course but if they can't then they'll give me a new phone. So, I'm going to take a saturday and drive 2 hours to get to an apple store. My suggestion to everyone having this problem, call apple, follow their restore restore restore advice. When it doesn't work, get a new phone if you're under warranty. Since they don't seem to be interested in fixing the problem maybe we shouldn't be interested in jumping through hoops to get our phones to work. Most of us would probably be willing to wait and hold off if they would simply acknowledge the problem and give us a "we're working on it". Maybe if they start seeing enough $$ go out the door in the form of new phones they'll be more careful with what they put in updates or maybe they really don't much care.

I phoned Apple yesterday. Initially they didn't want to talk to me since my phone is over 12 months old but they relented. I went through the process of restoring my iPhone and setting it up as a new phone, as opposed to restoring a backup. I lost all my settings, but that's a small price to pay for a stable phone.

Apple Support said that if that didn't fix the issue, then it's likely to be a hardware issue and my phone will need to be replaced. For the price of 120ukp I'd receive a 'new' phone (does that mean refurbished?). TBH, I'd pay it if it meant that my problems would definitively disappear. Actually, if I could use this misfortune to obtain a cheap upgrade to a 3GS, then I'd be even happier.

I have also the Standby-Problem with my iPphone 3GS. It often crashes while standby, only a hard-reset helps to start it again.
I have this prolbem since I have updated to 3.1

Not only the 3G ist affected by this problems with 3.1, the 3GS ist also affected.

Last Sunday I made a clean-install. After the clean-install, the iPhone worked for one day without crashes. But then the crashes came back.

Today it crashes all few minutes, so its not possible for me to use the phone any longer.

Slowly I get angry with the iPhone and with Apple!

What data is lost on the phone if you restore as a new phone and sync with iTunes instead of restoring from a backup?

    Add me to the list.

I do not use Mobile Me, and have WiFi turned off.
Mail settings were set to "fetch." I have changed them to "manual" based on what I read on earlier parts of this thread (before I realized there was too much here to read through.)

Tried calling my own number from another phone while it was dead - no response.

    Not a happy camper.

You are going to loose all your pictures made with by the phone, all SMS and mms, all the eventually notes and calendars you didn't sync, and all the settings of the iPhone and the setting of each application.

I would just like to tell everyone what seems to have worked for me. I was experiencing the standby lock about 2 to 3 times a day since the update to 3.1. Two days ago, I decided to drain my battery completely (until the big red empty battery icon with the lighning bolt showed up). Then I plugged my iPhone into the wall charger and let it boot. Since then, no lockups for two days. I've also noticed a large improvement in battery life. Maybe I just got lucky, or perhaps it is just a temporary fix, but I am pleased so far. If it locks up in standby mode again, I will take it to the Apple store and have it exchanged for a new one. Not that I think a new phone with the same hardware and software will not have the same issue, but if I have an excuse to get a new iPhone without scratches, why not?

If anyone else has tried this "solution," reply and tell us how it worked / did not work for you.

Just some advice to quickly drain your battery if you want to try this, I found that watching Youtube videos does a pretty good job of sucking juice from the battery, but it lasted for quite a bit after I got the 20% warning. Maybe the meter just needed to be calibrated. Good luck. I look forward to hearing if this works for anyone else.

    To everyone having this problem.

If your phone is under warranty, ask Apple for a replacement phone.

I had my 3G replacement with a "new" phone with OS 3.0 installed. I did fill out the official Apple bug form, but I am not holding my breath for Apple to issue a software update.

Good luck to all. I have been very disappointed with my iPhone and AT&T. I am planning to break my contract with AT&T.

I had the same problem and did a restore, not to 3.0 but 3.1. Still have the problem. Apple needs to get a move on this. Half the time I'm just carrying a brick around with me.

    Hi From Belgium,
    What Data you loose:
. All data use by non apple software.
for example: I use idisk and few files are in local: I've to put again in the iphone
. I use few radio online softwares: I've to search again the radios
. I use Mariner Calc: I've to transfert again the sheets from my macs
. omnifocus: I've to configurate again the mobile me account and synchro again
    etc...
Not complexe but long when you have a lot of software.

    Regards
