Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

ggarthe's response on the reset is the right way to go, it completely changed the behavior of my IPhone after a bad install of OS 3.1. EVERYONE should try it. I consider it the "FIX" for this issue.

I don't know whether the deep discharge is a total and lasting fix, but it's at least a workaround - it's in essence identical to the one I posted earlier: it gets the phone ALL the way off, to reset the parts that other resets don't reach. Powering on with no SIM and then powering off and re-adding the SIM seems to do the same thing.

It appears to be manifesting itself through an over-busy userland daemon somewhere, something high enough priority to interrupt the normal UI. Tracking the CPU usage during freezes indicates that it's User rather than System time that's spiralling out of control.

Is anyone who still has the freezes during normal operation (mine have gone away) finding that it affects 3rd party foreground software any more or less than native apps like mail and ipod?

i did a restore as new phone but nothing happens...its still a brick...frozen...doorstopper like product. but the thing that puzzles me is that my battery doesnt want to drain...its still at 100% since september 14....this is really weird and mysterious. maybe its because its frozen.

Ufilee I did follow ggarthe's instructions with the exception that I didn't erase the phone first but did a restore as new and didn't sync a thing from the old profile. It froze again this morning. So fwiw, it didn't help me. The phone is generally speedier than before but it still goes into coma mode.

Well, I didn't fix mine. I did delete all of my data, set up as new With a new download of 3.1 etc etc and still have freezeups. I also tried the sim card fix that didn't help either. Back at square one.

This is ridiculous, I can't believe the number of posts here about this issue. I hope everyone is sending bug reports directly to Apple about this. ( http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html ) It definitely needs to be fixed.

I hope we can get enough people logging complaints to Apple about this issue that they acknowledge that there really is a problem and release a fix in a timely manner.

Seems they are too busy putting video cameras on Nanos and whatever else.

Yeah so much for Apple's rock solid software is right....this is a joke. I cant even use my iPhone for its main function... A PHONE!!!!!

I will be recommending GOOGLE ANDROID phones for everyone this Christmas.

Bottom line is dont buy an iphone if you need a cell phone for emergencies, you cant rely on it.

send me your email address to myth199@yahoo.com with some kind of reference to this post and I will send you the links on how to. there is a really good youtube video out there that I used. There are many post or step by step instructions on how to do this. You just have to find the right one. This will only work on the 3G.

I just thought I would jump in saying that I'm having the same problem. It started randomly this past Sunday night after browsing through the ebay application. I panicked and eventually found some info online that instructed me to do the hard reset, which worked. Since then, it has crashed 3 more times on me. That's 4 crashes in 6 days. I updated to 3.1 on 9/15 and didn't have my first crash until 9/20.

I posted last night about how I turned of the anti-fraud option for Safari in the main settings, and rebooted. Everything returned back to normal. Everything still is working normally. By phone was unusable before, Anyone else try this? Seems too simple a fix, but at least for me, it works.
