Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

    Dear Mr Apple,

You see what you have people doing? Tut Tut

I think the thing I find frustrating is not having Apple acknowdledge there is a problem. Im pleased in a way to come on here and find that its not just me and it would be a nice touch if when you logged onto this offical Apple website it run a status window right off the homepage keeping us up to date and at least letting us know they have identified a problem and that they are working to resolve it.
Also is there not a way that off itunes there could be a simple way of backtracking to the pervious OS say underneath the restore when on your iphone summary page. Im only guessing that if i do a restore it takes it back to how the phone was before even the 3.0 update came out?

peoples thought on this? even better a bigwig from Apple itself? is there any place to go for offical news?

I've done a full restore two times, as a new phone each time, and no luck.

What I've found curious is that I didn't have the problem with the iPhone fully charged. Then, when reaching half battery, three shut downs in an hour.

I've turn Off push notifications (gpush & notifyme), but On for my mobileme account, so I'll wait again to that half battery moment.

I've got the same issues since upgrading to 3.1.

I've sent my bug report to Apple and recommend everybody who is suffering from these problems does likewise.

Fill out this form http://apple.com/feedback/iphone.html and make sure Apple is aware how many people are suffering with this bad update.

Just submitted the following feedback on this issue via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

I encourage everyone to contribute their observations as well so Apple can identify the cause of this problem.

    ---

After installing the 3.1 update on my iPhone I have been experiencing random lockups on my iPhone 3G 8G, usually twice or more per day. Usually I will notice my phone is unusually warm in my pocket, and upon trying to wake it I will find it unresponsive - the screen will not wake up until doing a hard reset. If I don't catch the issue right away, by the time I reset the phone I find that the battery has almost completely drained, which leads me to believe that some process is stuck running while the phone is ostensibly asleep, draining the battery and overheating the phone and eventually causing it to lock up.

I have a Bluetooth adapter in my car and sometimes while driving I will catch the phone locking up - my car stereo chimes whenever a Bluetooth phone connects or disconnects, so if the Bluetooth adapter chimes unexpectedly while I am driving I know it has lost connection with the iPhone. However, I haven't noticed considerably more lock ups while driving, so I don't believe the Bluetooth connection itself is causing the issue.

I have tried doing a phone Restore from iTunes, which did not help the issue. I have disabled push notifications on the phone and phishing protection under Safari, which I thought might be the background processes responsible for the issue, but these steps did not help either.

Please let me know if I can supply any further information to help resolve this issue.

    Hi from Belgium,
just few news after total reinstallation.
Since 2 days everything works, no crash , no frezze, battery ok.
So for me it resolve the problem.
In resume, this solution can resolve problem for few people.
try it. (reinstall OS3.1 and don't restore but select new iphone)
Hope Apple propose a solution for everybody else.
    Good WeekEnd

I think that we should send all of our useless iPhones back to Apple care of Steve. That will get someone to look at it.

Had a 'coma' the other day. Decided to leave it alone and see if the phone would come back. It did in about ~5 to 10 minutes. I pushed the button and what did I see on the top of the unlock screen? The IPOD controls, including the volume slider (it was at the TOP, when in the iPod it is usually at the bottom!) Anyway, I unlocked and this image went away never to be seen again. I was able to make a phone call.

Note that I had NOT touched the iPod all day (and I had done a complete reboot in the morning.) Also, I have had problems inserting/removing the headphone and pausing through the headphones. Perhaps it is the iPod app that is the run-away process?? Anyway, this is just speculation.

This was the last straw for me. I found some instructions online on how to downgrade the OS to 3.0.1 (there is a workaround!) and did that... note that this does not include the baseband, but numerous folks have confirmed that the problem is in the OS 3.1 update itself and not the baseband. I set my phone up as a new phone and reinstalled all apps/podcasts, etc.

What ***** is if you are not technical or confident doing it, downgrading to 3.0.1 may not be an option to you. Needless to say, I will NOT update again until Apple both releases a fix and the discussion boards VERIFY that the fix works (and doesn't cause other headaches.) Note that I have already submitted a report to the URL that has been posted numerous times here, so I have done my part.

Having the same issues here as well as problems with playing music. The songs on my playlist play for 10 to 20 seconds then change to the next song. If I do a restore is that going to fix the problems? This is really frustrating.

I also tried downgrading but it didn't work for me. What is the workaround? Can you post a link or send a pm please?
