Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I always got the "1015" error and then the phone went into restore mode and iTunes put 3.1 back. How can I get around that? I know JBing can get around it but the windows tool is not out yet and I have XP. Know what I mean?

whsingleton: Is it possible that those are just the controls that normally show when you double-tap the Home button? When the phone is locked, a double press of Home will show the forward/back controls, the play/pause button and the volume slider. It may be that pressing the button multiple times while it was comatose had queued up.

It does seem to be a userland process that's getting out of control, though. I almost wish mine was still as badly behaved as when I first updated so I could try narrowing it down. I did the start-with-no-SIM trick though, and now it's only pausing for a few seconds a day so it's hard to attack the problem in earnest.

At least there are now indications that Apple "Product Specialist" people are aware of the problem and trying to do some serious debugging behind the scenes...

I am having the same issues. This has just started happening to my phone for the past four days. It will randomly shut off, and I will not be able to turn it back on - as if it is in a "coma". It turns itself back on whenever it wants to. One evening, it shut off, and I wasn't able to do anything with it until the next morning when it was back on. Only thing was, the battery was completely drained. Before it shut off, the battery was still at 3/4 full - and my battery does NOT drain completely in just one night.

I have no idea what the issue is. Some say it is the 3.1 software update. I updated as soon as it came out, and have had no problems with it until just a few days ago. I haven't changed any settings or anything...

Rolled back to 3.0.1 and no problems at all. Phone is better than ever. I will not install 3.1 until the problem is taken care of.

To make a comment like that you must have insider knowledge huh?

Quite crazy to beleive that the good people at Apple don't monitor their own forums.
from time to time especially when there is a major issue.

I can say this because while nothing to do with Apple I am something to do with a major website with feedback and we are always going into the forums when an issue comes along

Fear not people Im quite sure someone from the OS team have been making
notes of all the issues with regards the 3.1 update both in the feeback and what appears here

Watch that video. Its the best out there. I tried several other tutorials and no luck. The only problem I ran into was that I needed a Windows machine to run q**pwn 2.2.1. I used Windows 7 virtual machine. Let me know if you have any questions.

If you get error 1015 that means you successfully rolled back to 3.0. You are half way there. You need q**pwn 2.2.1 for Windows make sure you use winrar to unpack. Watch this video.

I don't know what JBing is. Those that jailbreaked for purposes of unlocking you wont be able to re-unlock with a successful roll back to 3.0 because the baseband has been updated with the 3.1 update.

Thanks Fomula007, what I meant about retracting statement was that I also submitted formal feedback.
