Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

But how much do you live up to yours? Enough said!

    Caveat emptor perhaps?

If you want 'Support', does one listen to those who offer 'The Dark Side'? Personally? No! Never!!!!

I can vouch for MR BIG J and his method!!! (sorry i was too busy enjoying my 3.0.1 again)

So, it is NOT JAILBREAKING. as MR Big has already stated at least twice and I have made sure myself while doing it, it DOES NOT JAILBREAK the phone. merely takes it out of the restore loop, goes around the 1015 error message. Just watch the video. or even better do it yourself. easiest thing.

However, i must say this because we're sort of beating our own purposes here. a workaround might settle things down for the moment and make people forget that there is sth fundamentally wrong with the 3.1 firmware. that shouldn't happen. apple should release an actually working version of 3.1

but anyways, thanks again Mr Big. i"m not a doctor losing lives because of missed phonecalls or the president of the USA pushing the red button because of a missed call (he's got a blackberry anyway, smart guy) but this really helps a lot. it makes a phone function like a bloody phone.

That's very true. We have to keep submitting formal feedback as well as blowing these forums up. Apple needs to live up to "it just works."

"or even better do it yourself"

Sorry, no need. Trying to get everyone else not to need to do so either!!!! How many have updated their iPhones but mot reset their iPhones or have not updated their routers/etc or even know that they might need to do so or how to do so even if they do?

    Funny old world. isn't it?!

It seems to take a lifetime even to get people to do a 'reset' (press and hold the sleep/wake and Home buttons together until the Apple logo appears, then release and wait for the process to complete, not simply a 'power-off'/'power-on') that 'might' take away their problems before they choose to listen to the 'snake-oil' salesmen!

awww come on. you're insinuating something that is just plain not true. i mean the snake oil.

a hard reset, so thoroughly described by you DOES NOT take away the problem. it's just a quick, desperate fix. which still leaves you with missed calls you never know about.

You seem so clued up about 'Missed calls' but never once have you said anything about 'network', only about 'iPhone'. Why is that? Is it that 'missed calls' have nothing to do with 'network' or is it because you do not know whether or not 'missed calls' have anything at all to do with 'network'?

    Just curious....

what i know is that before 3.1 i never had my iphone lock up on me as it did with 3.1. i also know that while being locked up with 3.1 i cannot take calls. i tried it, i heard the ringing through the other end but my phone wouldnt as mush as move an eyebrow. voicemail kicked in. after the iphone came out of it, there was no notification of a missed call.

now i'm not an it expert nor a network expert. this is what happened and it's bad enough. and english is my second language and its getting very late here, so good night.

I just got back from the Apple store @ Florida Mall in Orlando. I don't think I've been that aggravated at "salesman" in a LOOOOOONNNNNGGGGG time. First off I'm new to Apple products and didn't know I needed an appointment to get my phone looked at. I guess the market positioning is to make it somewhat comparable to my BMW in that you just don't "show up". I fully explained my problems after being asked if there was something that she could do. Sure, I tell her everything. WELL!!! It seems that NO ONE in Orlando is having this problem, they've never heard of it. I was asked what computer I was using to update with, "a PC, with Vista". "OH!!! That has to be the problem". WHAT!?!?!?!?! The young whippersnapper that was in diapers when I started doing HTML just pushed the wrong button!!! I calmly told her to look at the discussion boards and that it wasn't just me and Windows users. "Well, people get on there and rant and rave all the time, they just say anything to stir the pot". At that point I asked for a manager. I didn't get any further with her.

To me it appears that this Apple store is just what Windows users always perceived Apple to be: a bunch of snobs looking down their noses at anyone that didn't use a Mac to upgrade their iPhone.

At this point I'm going to call AT&T and tell them this story and demand a refund of purchase price on this phone and get a Windows based phone, unless I get some pretty good satisfaction otherwise. For what I spend on four phones with AT&T each month over all these years I think I'll get someone to listen.

To say the least I was just stunned at this type of business practice. You don't gain customers by denigrating the competition. All you do is make them angry and they refuse to come back. Till eight days ago I was actually beginning to think that I might try an Apple machine. Not now. Not ever.
