Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

    Same problem for me!

It's really annoying when I need to make a phone call. No matter how hard I press the home button, it just doesn't wake up.

How ridiculous the update is! How can Apple release that without considerate testing?
Apple, what are you doing there?

Black iPhone 3G with 8GB. After updating to 3.1 I get the following problem more than once a day:

The iPhone does not wake up when pressing the buttons. It is also noticeably WARM. It doesn't ring, and calls end up in voicemail. Only way to bring it back to life is holding both buttons for 10 seconds.

I spoke with a colleague that has the same model and he is facing the exact same problem after updating to 3.1.

From all the complaints it is clear that 3.1 is flawed. This is not a minor bug, this is a serious disruption of my productivity. We need a fix NOW.

I updated to the 3.1 on Thurs night and my phone has shut down by itself 7 times! Like the previous post experience, only a hard reboot has brought it back. Last night it happened three times back to back in less than 15 minutes. To top it all, today t didn't want to turn off, after I found that even when it had the capability of online browsing, e-mail exchange, iPod use, calls were not coming thru. After receiving calls from friends via landline is when I figured it out. They called me, it rings normal to them, but I never got their calls or lost calls for hours. I tried to turn it off to reboot, but it wouldn't let me. My only option was hard reboot. Frustrating! Just wondering when a "fix" will be available. Anyone with some good news?

It's happened to me over and over again. I've stopped touching the button on the top of the phone - it seems that if it just goes to sleep without me touching that button it doesn't do the weird black-screen thing. It's pretty obnoxious to have to do the reboot all the time - and probably hard on the phone!

I hope this gets fixed soon! You think this would have come up in the testing..

I placed a post way back on page 18 (I think) a few days ago describing the same things everyone else is experiencing...non-responsive from being asleep.

I called apple support and they couldn't figure anything out so they gave me an appointment at the genius bar in the mall near me. The genius bar had no idea but were aware of the problem and just gave me a new device. Problem solved (so far).

came across this elsewhere might help:

As we reported earlier, many iPhone users have encountered problems with the iPhone 3.1 firmware upgrade. Until Apple comes out with fixes for these bugs, the solution may be a downgrade to earlier software versions.

If you're having problems with the iPhone 3.1 update, try this restore to downgrade to iPhone OS 3.0.1:

    - Download the correct iPhone 3.0.1 IPSW file for your iPhone:
http://www.quickpwn.com/2009/07/iphone-3-0-1.html has the IPSW files from Apple under "iPhone 3.0.1 Download Links."

    - Make sure your iPhone is connected to the computer.
    - Open iTunes, then hold down "Option" and select "Restore" on your Mac (Shift and Restore in Windows) when your iPhone mounts.
    - Choose the downloaded 3.0.1 IPSW file.
    - This will restore your iPhone to OS 3.0.1.
    - Now you can restore to your latest iPhone backup.

You are missing one step Formula007, error 1015 will occur after the firmware roll back and you're phone will stay stuck on recovery mode. Error 1015 is a good thing you just have to find a program to cycle it out of recovery mode.

Been away from itunes sync for a week and I only got one instance of a "shut-down/deep sleep/whatever it is" compared to several when syncing itunes every day, using itunes 9 is the worse itunes release I have seen on OS X (crashes). It occurred after using the camera application. Surprised apple have failed to release a fix for this as it is generating a lot of bad pr in this and several other online forums.

Exactly the same thing here. Phone is quite warm in my pocket.

I restored through iTunes, and didn't get any more blank-screens for a couple days, but its started again.

    Hello,

As many here, I have had the "coma" issue since 3.1

I have tried many things (including sending an official feedback), but so far, the only move that worked was this one (reseting the networks settings).

I hope this will help you.
