Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Just adding a "me too" so that Apple can see its for real. Only about 3-4 "comas" since the upgrade. Hope its fixed soon.

I'm having a number of issues since updating to 3.1 as well.
I'm experiencing the random shutdowns/resets, forcing me to do a hard reset myself.
Most frequently though, my phone loses its carrier signal somehow. It will appear to be normal, but won't receive any calls/texts, can't make any outgoing calls/texts, and can't connect to the internet despite the screen showing full signal strength and the "3G" icon being present in the top left corner. If I try to send a text or make a call, I usually get a "can't connect to cellular network" message.
The only thing I can do at that point is shut down the phone & restart it. It happens several times a day, and I've missed several incoming calls because my phone can't or won't receive them.

    Phone: 3G
    Push: off
    Wifi: off
    Location services: off
    3G: on

I hope Apple has acknowledged the issues people are having, because there's not much of a point in owning a cell phone that can't make or receive calls.

I registered simply so that I could add a "me too" to this thread. My testing suggests that the dropped-cellular-signal issue occurs after using the iPod app, but I'm not certain of that. I have the FreeMemory app, and it appears that there is a serious memory leak somewhere, perhaps in the iPod. I have seen my RAM as low as 1.5 Mb within 5 minutes of restarting the iPhone and after running only the iPod app.

    Apple acknowledge there's a problem?
What a great idea that would be on this site for the many many hundreds of
people suffering since the 3.1 update.

FAT CHANCE!!! Grin and bare it, that's apples clear message
    to it's iPhone public.

I have always just clicked update for all my Apple Software, and never a hitch.

For the first time ever with Apple I am now hesitant to click update.

I am experiencing the same problems as expressed in this forum.

It has just taken me an hour to reload and update my iPhone, after it did a hard reboot.

Did I push a wrong button?

    Cheers
    Neil

Oh yeah, lemme add my voice to the chorus.

Called support and they said to do a factory reset.
I said my computer crashed not long ago so that means I'll lose ALL my information. Support said this is what they've been told to tell people to do. Also the person had no other solution nor knew if Apple was working on a fix.

That was the least helpful Apple person ever.

Madness. I mean, did they test this update at ALL?

I have to say that Apple usually gets it together so I'm sure there'll be a fix, but they need to at least acknowledge it.

BTW, I just did a complete factory reset on my phone two days ago in an effort to correct the problems brought on by 3.1. Didn't work. The problems are the same now as they were before the reset. But at least I get to play Peggle and beat all the levels again. Thanks, Apple!

I've noticed that mine does it mostly right after I have unplugged it from the power outlet.

I had the EXACT same problems! I'm convinced it's the 3.1 upgrade. I did every suggestion mentioned and nothing worked.

I went to the Apple Store and they gave me a new phone (I'm still under warranty). I reset phone to a new user (like they told me to....which ***** cause I lost all my game settings and crucial phone numbers) and it works perfectly now. It has 3.0 and it's fine. I will NOT upgrade phone until there's a 3.2, and after waiting weeks before I read its ok. I think Apple folded BIG time on this 3.1 upgrade.

I suggest, get a new phone if under warranty, or stick it out until they fix it the upgrade....IF they do.
I'm very upset with Apple and this whole ordeal, but they did score points with giving me a new phone, hassle free. Good luck!!

Oh man, my iPhone now has worse battery life AND goes into a coma VERY frequently. APple hasn't even acknowledged the issue, very disappointing.

Don't mean to burst your balloon but unless your phone was within 14 days of being sold to you
your new phone no matter how well packaged was almost certain to have been a refurbished model.

Apple are not about to start handing out brand new phones because of a bugged update.

Anybody unsure of this statement and who are about to receive a " new" phone during a warrenty period
past 14 days should ask " is this a refurb?" the answer will always be yes if not they are commiting a very serious retail offence.

Ok, I went to the apple store after one nice but unhelpful person on phone support and a second person that was hateful and unhelpful. You ain't gonna believe this:
The second phone call with apple indicated that if I would take my phone to an apple store they would most likely replace it since they had determined that it was more than likely a "hardware issue". Ok yesterday morning 2 hrs to the apple store (I won't mention how the second phone rep person screwed up the appointment time). A very helpful guy at the apple store in Tulsa Ok, looked at the phone noted no water damage, did a diagnostic - no hardware problem and determined that a developer mode restore would likely fix the problem. I asked him to look up the case and he'd see that it had already been determined to be a hardware issue and that I was there just to get a new phone. There was no log of the second call under my case number. Great - the unhelpful and hateful phone rep also didn't log the call properly. He talked to someone in the back and decided to go ahead and give me a new phone (BTW the replacement phones are running 3.0.1 os) We did the paperwork, I walked out happy. I walked out the door and it went into a coma, hmmm, walked back in. . maybe it just needs a little more charge and a sync, ok tried that. Left the mall ran some errands, another coma. (remember running 3.0.1) Back to the apple store. Let's replace the sim card, ok sure why not. (my sim card was ancient, still said cingular) Took a little while but this guy really was awesome to work with and he patiently worked with ATT. Awesome- good to go. Walked down to the end of the mall and back. As I walked by the store I just thought what the heck and checked the phone - another coma!!! What the F is going on. (remember 3.0.1 software) Walked back in. Another new phone. So now I'm on the second new phone and a new sim card. I hung around tulsa for another couple of hours - no comas. As of now it has been about 19 hours and my phone hasn't had a coma.

Folks - I have no idea what actually appears to have fixed my problem. It would appear to me that the 3.1 update did something to the sim card. Maybe the card just wasn't quite compatible or something. Then once the damage was done to the sim card it passed it onto the new phone that wouldn't work even after a new sim card was installed. (I'm guessing that data on sim cards is not touched my any level of restore.) It is also possible that the first new phone I received had the same problem that my original did. I do not understand what happened.

I would love to actually know what happened. I kept the sim card just in case it would help for someone to actually review it.

BTW replacement phones were refurbished models. Looks brand new.

Just want to add my voice to the chorus.

I have a 3G, just upgrated to 3.1 OS, and this morning it went dead. It actually happened another time last week before I installed 3.1, and I assumed it was because it was a new app that I must have left running, draining the whole battery. Now, I'm not sure.

Anyway, hopefully the Apple folks fix this ASAP.
