Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I have the same problem. After updating to 3.0.1 iPhone randomly shuts down.

It happens almost every time I manually lock the phone. And sometimes it just turns dead on its own.

My apps list is (Sorted after most used):

Facebook, BeejiveIM, iAmpRemote, VLC Remote, TV 2 Sporten, Air Sharing, Air Mouse, Trafikanten, VG TVGuide

(Not used every day) Skype, WiFiFoFum, Valutakalkul, Decibel, Matprat, NorFlights, iTranslate, Worms, Binary, BuzzCut, Spotify

(Not used after 3.0.1 update) iCam, Lux DLX, Labyrinth, Pop, Rolando, iFart, FS5 Hockey

I have not tried to restore and update again.

Apple has to fix this issue right away! This is quite annoying, all in all I have been very happy with my iphone previously. But when i updated to 3.0 the problems started to emerge and with 3.0.1 it has just been terrible.

I have the same problem too. I'm wondering if someone forgot to run the unit tests before releasing the upgrade software? That and do endurance tests on it. Mine will randomly reboot when accessing an application, or just lock up. I'm guessing someone is stepping on memory somewhere.

    Hi Formula007
I bought my iphone last November so it was coming up on a year soon. I asked if it was a refurbished phone and he said he didn't know (he probably lied). I understand it probably is a refurbished phone, but I'll take a refurbished one (as long as it works well and lasts) over my almost one year old phone. If it lasts a year I'll be happy. Then my contract is up and can get a new iphone....(hopefully a 32gig+ which is what I'm waiting for).

    Headers,

    gawd, what a story.
this is the first time that i hear a phone with 3.0.1 is going into a "coma". this is scary stuff. the sim-card messing with another phone? i cant even imagine how that could happen.

however, the only thing in common between the 3.1 and 3.0.1 phones that you got is the hardware. or is it? i think this whole issue is beyond us, i mean it's definitely beyond me.

The issue is simple and not beyond me...

I have a very costly phone that is NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE

it's up to Apple to get a fix out and quick... I don't give a monkeys what's causing
my phone to hang up or why my battery drains down within 8 hours only that I get what I paid for

" it just works". Er..... Yes but only when it and not you decides.

    by the way.

why would we seriously expect a brand, a company to produce flawless hardware&software all the time every time. there is no such thing. **** happens to everyone. why should apple be an exception. they're not demigods.

someone in this thread (maybe multiple people) have said to try turning off push notifications.

i tried this, and haven't had the "coma mode" since. before i turned them off, my phone was shutting down 3-4 times/day, even though i rarely got any push notifications.

i recommend trying this temporary fix until apple releases an update.

Also want my voice to be heard as I, too, am having this problem with random shutdowns on my iPhone G3 since ungrading to 3.1.

And just as an aside, I've been a Mac person since 1985. I can honestly say that I've never had the extent of problems that I've had just this week with Apple products. In addition to the iPhone problem, I upgraded my iMac to OS 10.6. I use Airport to share my internet connection with my iBook clamshell. Now, since that upgrade, I have to turn off Airport if I want my Mighty Mouse to work with my iMac.

Sigh.... it can only get better, right?

Thanks for the hints on this thread. I've downgraded back to 3.0.1. Lost all my SMS and MMS, but that's ok compared to the problems I was facing with 3.1, mainly the "coma" mode and battery life.

They are not an exception, I accept that no software/hardware product is flawless as such a thing does not exist but as a paying customer I expect a basic level of quality for a firmware release. It appear that even apple have dropped the ball this time, the so called coma mode is the first time I have experienced such as low level of quality from this company, there is a big difference between the odd slow down or app crash and the total inability of the phone to remain functional! Nothing further to add to the discussion other than the problem still exists on my 3G and I await a fix, no workarounds have resolved the issue.

After reading through this thread, I will no longer be buying a 3GS. I thought the company prided itself on software that doesn't have the problems of Windows, etc. So much for that.

When will Apple admit they royally screwed up on this one? How many more customers will they have to lose to for them to wake up?
