Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

3.1 update does not cause problems with the 3GS model

that said I'm sure your get some that want to prove me wrong and say theirs is but
if you do your homework your see that some extra features in the makeup of the S model
means the update has had no effect on it.

Anybody having problems with their S can't blame 3.1

I'm not buying the 3GS because Apple obviously doesn't have their act together.

Cut off your nose to spite your face then.

Yes were all peed off at the moment who wouldn't be
but the reason we are is because without this hitch iPhones are awsome

your get the 3GS if you were thinking about getting it
even more so now that you know there's not an issue with it and 3.1

a fix will come out soon enough given the amount of fuss and then we can all get back
to worrying and wondering if when sour cream reaches it's sell by date it turns freash?

    A little more data:
    - I've been having random comas just once or twice a day since updating, enough to be annoying (since I don't know when I'll try to use the phone and find it needing hard reset and totally without power), but seemingly less than others. (But I probably use my phone less, since I have a different carrier for my work cell phone). I'd been ready to do the full reset, but decided to hold off, since it sounded like people have had mixed results, and I haven't had time to take this on.
    - Instead, since I just spent the weekend far from all wifi and 3g networks, I had these disabled all weekend. Not a single coma. Took the opportunity to do a network reset, as described above. The reset "took" (all saved networks are gone)
    - Unfortunately, as soon as I get back to wifi land, within an hour, I'm using the phone, it goes to sleep, I try it again 5 mins later, and coma! Booo I had previously suspected that iPod use or something might be related to comas, but this time I had not been listening to anything for a long time.
    - Also, plugging in to power did not help in this case. Plugging in did help exactly once before (when the battery was totally drained). In my experience, for most comas, no amount of plugging in has helped (including a few goes in case the first try wasn't recognized somehow). You really do have to do the hard reset.

I realize that we're currently looking at different wrinkles on a huge elephant, but I've been trying modest suggestions listed here, like the network reset, so just reporting back that sadly, it didn't help me.

the battery just goes dead, I plug it in to the power source and get it back after it reboots. full battery at the time, and it had happened twice now. this is after a 3.1 update, i never had issues before. I am not an expert, but this release of 10.6.1, itunes 9 and iphone 3.1 are not working together well and 3.1 is a bad release. I hope Apple release fixes fast.

Add me to the list. My seemingly random shutdowns have only happened when i was home, and connected to my wifi network. At least that's the only pattern I've been able to come up with. It has never happened to me while outside of my house. I also have noticed that i can tell even before pushing the home button that it is either ok, or in coma. When I pick it up, and it's in come, it feels unusually hot to the touch. When I do a hard reboot, the battery is drained to under 20%. This *****; I've only had my 3g for 3 weeks, then Apple pulled this bonehead move. At least acknowledge you screwed up and there will be a fix.

That would be beautiful... I love my iPhone but I am so frustrated with it, that I am almost ready to throw it away and get the POS google phone, if Apple doesn't come up with an update to fix the issue soon!

    ....S.O.S!!, Apple!!!

So I just went to Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings, turned 3G off and wifi off, as I read in some posts. I'll keep you guys posted if something gets better..... or worse?

I had a conversation with an "Apple Expert" today regarding the numerous, random shutdowns after upgrading to 3.1. The expert informed me the only way he could fix it was if I paid for Apple Care or a one time fee. Until Apple issues a fix to this problem (for free), it's just frustrating.

I can now report that having done the "reset network settings" is actually making my phone go comatose much more often than it had been (3 times in 3 hours, vs the usual 3 times per day...)

I seem to have fixed my problem with the "coma."

In settings --> General --> Reset --> Reset All Settings

I did that & reseted it & from there the "coma" stopped occuring.

My iPhone also runs smoother. Try at your own risk but my phone has been running fine since Thursday.

The "reset network settings" fix is actually making my phone go comatose much more often. 4 times today and I was going about 4 days without one.
