Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I was contacted by Apple support and asked to plug my phone in with a cable and duplicate it while, collecting logs via the console tab with the iphone config utility. So far no dice, but I'm wondering if it doesn't happen when I'm plugged in, as it's always happened to be off a cable.....

    So-

Has anyone had this happen while the phone was on the usb cable?!

With WiFi disabled in settings, I have not had a lockup since 7am this morning. I don't think it matters if you're connected or not, just whether or not it's on.

I don't think that's a direct issue, as I've had lockups with my wifi on and off, but I just turned my wifi on to see if I can force a lockup. I really wish for a lockup right now so I can forward this log to them and get it fixed! :o)

I mentioned a similar observation earlier. I have yet to have an issue with locking up while attached to my MacBook. Not sure why that would have an affect, but there does appear to be some battery issues as well with the 'coma' mode. Might be that it is getting hung up with some battery diagnostic?

My iPhone actually had an issue upgrading, but it was resolved once It restarted the computer and tried again. I sent the error log to Apple. It was working fine all day of 10th (things seemed peppier and the battery life SEEMED better).
Today my phone was working fine and I unlocked the screen (I too have auto screen lock) to check my email and set the iPhone down. I though of something I also wanted to check and I found that the screen was black and pushing any of the buttons would not work. I had to reset it and went on through my day.

Later on this afternoon I was listening to a few podcasts and I paused to answer a question and when I clicked resume on my headset the podcast would not resume. I had to hard reset it again. This time I also when and had the phone reset all settings. I had wifi and Bluetooth turned off. I also do not have MobileMe. So far my iPhone is working fine, but only time will tell.

I just wanted to voice my issue here and sadistically, I am glad I am not the only one.

Thank God its not just me.

It happened once yesterday - and so far three times today.

I lock it or it locks itself after timeout and I can't get the screen to turn back on. The only solution is a hard reset.

Also, another random thing - going into websites in which I have saved my username and password - I type the first two letters - the iPhone suggests the name - I hit space to complete - and it puts it in there twice - or once or twice - it has just inserted that word - but didn't auto-complete - so, it left what I typed in and then what it suggested as the username. Weird.

Mine has had the same problen since the latest upgrade. It had gotten to where it was locking up once a day - every day - then finally just randomly went to the boot screen with the silver apple and stayed there for about 5 minutes. I finally had all I could take and called iPhone help and - of course - they said it sounded like it needed a "restore as new phone" wipe. I did that and it was fine for about 24 hours - now it's back to doing it 1-2 times a day. Windows Mobile is looking better all the time.

I had the same problem last night around 11:15p.m. est. i did not have wifi turned on and I dont have mobileme, so that can't be the cause. It hasn't done it today, but I haven't used the phone all day, it has been plugged in.
When it did go into a coma, I tried doing a hard-reboot, and still nothing happened, until a few minutes later, and then it eventually did a hard reboot.

I just had another "blackout." I had paused a podcast for about 5 minutes. I unpaused the podcast from the headset and I received no response. I cursed and worked on my task. I remember reading how someone waited a few minutes. I tried a few minutes later and pressed the top button and my phone was back. I did not have to reset the iPhone. I have not resolved the issue, but I will continue to document my experiences here. Good luck to everyone!

Well, I just sat down to my computer to check the latest replies on this topic and my phone went into coma mode again!! (4th time today) But I just gave it a few minutes and it came back to life. So to be optimistic its not the worse thing that could happen but its super annoying. It seems like its happening to lots of people under very different conditions so it might be really hard for us to figure out exactly whats causing the problem.

I'm sure the Apple engineers can replicate this problem under test conditions and figure out why its happening. Hopefully they can do it sooner rather then later and issue a fix.

Count me in too. Same issue: random shut-downs after OS 3.1 update. Only a reset will make it work. It happened once yesterday and about six times today. On the most recent attempt to reset, the battery was completely drained. It had been at around 80% charged three hours earlier, on the last time I'd successfully used it.

Same here. Hoping for a solution soon.

Tried to restore an older iPhone software image, no luck.

Now I have another incentive to ditch the iPhone.

so i went all day with wifi, push notification, mail fetch.push off and still suffered from this today while at work. i noticed however that when you just wait it out for a few minutes and press the sleep/wake button it goes back to normal.. but i think its a problem with the firmware recognizing the sleep/wake function because after it locked up i pressed the home button and it took a screen shot and everytime after that i pressed the home button it kept taking screen shots.. almost as if i had the sleep/wake button held down.. anyways, this is getting really annoying and they need to correct this soon.. hopefully
