Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

Why would you reset the network settings for ? Aren't you supposed to do that in like network emergencies ?

I suggested, resetting everything so that u keep all your data but your phone is set up like a brand new one

Tottoroo02 - yeah just plain bizarre. It's been more than 24 hours and no comas. I don't know how a sim card could really mess with a phone etc. . . But note that my first replacement had a coma running the 3.0.1 software with the old sim card and then a coma with 3.0.1 software and a NEW sim card. The second replacement phone had the benefit of the new sim card. It isn't simple whatever it is.

This is complete garbage! I wonder how many missed calls & missed job offers I may have had in the past week due this coma crap happening. And with such a large population having so much problems why wouldn't Apple step up the pace on fixing the problem?

Add me to the list. This happened about 5 -6 times since installing 3.1 I don't know if shut down is a proper term because I'm not sure that the unit is actually off, It's just completely unresponsive until a hard reset. I also got the problem of not being able to find a signal after one of the resets. Eventually after about 15 minutes it did get a signal. That only happened once and seemed to have happened to someone else on this discussion.

I've had the same problem. My original iPhone 3g would turn off and wouldnt turn back on without a hard reboot. I thought it was a hardware problem and went to the apple store. They apparently thought so to because they replaced the unit. But the new one is doing the same thing. I really hope apple releases a fix to this soon.

Everyone; just roll back to 3.0 for the time being or at least until Apple finally does something about this flaw. Sometimes we have to take action and not just wait around for others to make things better for us. But like like tottorro02 mentioned we have to keep submitting formal feedback/complaints so we could be heard.

Same thing for me. It appears to be getting worse. Everything was fine the first few days then I had a random shutdown. A couple days went by and then another shutdown. Now, it's every day I get at least one random shutdown, and apps that need logins, like Facebook, keep getting signed off.

    Hi Everyone:

I, like so many others, have also experienced the frequent “coma” mode. This began almost immediately after installing the 3.1 update. Everything I did, resets, turning off WiFi, etc. had no effect. I finally did something that seems to have solved the issue. I do not know if it will work for everyone, but here is my solution that finally ended the madness. These steps may result in data loss (contacts, calendars, mail, photos, music, etc.) if these items are not also on your computer.

Step 1: Locate the file iPhone1,23.1_7C144Restore.ipsw. Delete the file and empty the trash. The file can be found at the following location:

    Macintosh HD\Users\User Account\Library\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\
Note “User Account” is the actual name of your user account.

Step 2: Connect your iPhone and allow it to sync with iTunes. Remember to import any unsaved photos into iPhoto.

Step 3: Now, if you click “Check for Update” it will tell you the iPhone has the latest version. Don’t let that throw you off. Click “Restore”. iTunes will realize it does not have the restore file (the one you deleted) and it will download a new copy from Apple. It will then proceed to use the new file to restore your iPhone.

Step 4: Setup your iPhone as a NEW phone. Do not restore your data from a backup. Setup your sync options and sync your iPhone to get your data.

I do not know how many people this will help. It definitely fixed mine. Perhaps the original update file issued in the first couple days was damaged. It might be worth a try if you have tried everything else. Best of luck to everyone.

I was 20 years old when this commercial hit the airwaves and until this week have never owned a closed source device. Until I opened my new 17" Pro ----- Friday. All this while my phone locks up. Hey "Geniuses" if any or you look up and see a psychotic GENEX in jogging gear in your store spinning like a dervish with an iPhone as a discus, DUCK QUICKLY. That monitor over your head is about to bite the big one. I am a great fan of discount tire...This should add some levity.

This POS is a PHONE first and foremost and a critical piece of my business. I'm socking it to AT&T tomorrow.

Just wondering if anyone here using Jailbroken firmware? The jailbreak firmware does not update the baseband firmware (modem firmware) to 5.x.x. So this might be causing the problem?

Yep, random shutdowns here too after updating to 3.1, particularly after manually powering down the screen with the on/off button.

    Never had any problems before.

I really hope Apple fix this soon - seems to be a very widely experienced issue, for which there is no established workaround, which renders the device inoperable.

I updated to 3.1 ... My iPhone is okay now... I had 2 random shut-downs when I locked my iPhone manually but I could solve it with pressing the sleep/wake + home buttons for 6 seconds and after that everything was fine.

    With this update:
-my battery capacity is the same,
-Safari sometimes quits when I want to switch between pages or when I want to close page(s),
-iPod sometimes quits when I use Genius,
-and sometimes my iPhone is so slow (happened once since I updated -1 week-)

I will report if I discover new problems with 3.1.

My 3G iphone (8GB) has been locking up for over a week now randomly. I'm pretty sure it's been since the 3.1 update but I can't say for certain. I did a full restore through iTunes a few days ago with no better results.
Today (Sunday 9/20/09) it locked up about 6 times, each time it's unresponsive for about 5 minutes if I let it just sit. I took it to the Apple Store today & have an appt in a couple days for the Geniuses to talk to me about it. The employee there showed me how to reset it which it will respond to, but nothing else. I simply want it to work as it should & used to. I didn't pay a premium for a phone to have it operate unreliably! C'mon Apple, get your crap together!!
Somehow I don't think a comparable high quality car manufacturer (comparing Apple in the ranks of the computer industry) would offer up the lame excuse "So you're having problems with your car? You say it stops operating randomly? Simple! Just get out of it, push on the gas cap & lift up on the door handle for 10-20 seconds then wait for the dome light to blink & it will restart for you! There, problem solved! Happy motoring!"
