Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

    I'm still having this problem.

I'm left totally without a phone now. I feel like I've tried everything.

Is there a definite fix yet?

While my problem is a bit more complicated I am hoping someone can help.

First my I phone locked up but not on the blank screen but the main icons page. Nothing worked even the sleep/off button. During the night the phone battery went completly flat and when I charged the phone all or so I thought was fine. However I discovered I had lost my albums in the i pod section. What is strange is my playlist and videos along with Apps, contacts etc is still in the phone.

Now the other problem is when I now conect the phone to my i tunes it shows the device icon on I tunes and the phone says syching but everything on i tunes freezes, even the small circle with the two arrows that should revolve next to the device icon does not work.I cannot even

I believe I could try the phone reset back to the factory setting but will lose my contacts which is not an option.

For all those experiencing random lock-ups, freezes, shut-downs on their 3G iPhone.

TURN OFF THE SAFARI FRAUD WARNING.

It's a software bug within 3.1 and it's probably related to minor hardware changes due to internal 3G revisions.

I had the same problem, turned fraud warning off, and now everything is fine and dandy.

I just hope apple is fixing the 3.1 soon.

    Best,

    Tim

TURN OFF THE SAFARI FRAUD WARNING.

Yep I did this 24 hours ago and it has worked fine ever since! Before that it shut down at least 10 times per day!

    Hello,

As many, I have blindly tried all suggested tricks, except restoring my iPhone as new (I do not want to lose some of my apps data), nor downgrading.

I thought I had fixed the coma issue after resetting the networks settings, but the fix did not held, and the bug came back.

I have just tried full reset, but I am now sure the solution can only come from Apple. So please, issue a fix !

Well it's strange that it works for some and not others! Anyway they need to fix it for everybody ASAP!

I thought iPhone had randomly fixed itself when it managed to not become unresponsive for two entire days, in fact it wasn't fixed, but did last a full 68 hours and 40 minutes before breaking again. Not much help but I thought I'd share what a fighter my little iPhone is. =P

In all seriousness, the best way to get their attention is to post feedback in the form of a bug report.

Worth reposting this again for the newcomers who may not have seen the numerous mentions in pages past.

My wife has a 3G and was having this issue. I turned off the fraud warning. I think the key is to reboot the phone afterwards. I didn't and she still had the issue and after rebooting to get it back, the phone has been fine for 3 days.

Apple has said this for the fraud warning:

"Safari's anti-phishing database is downloaded while the user charges their phone in order to protect battery life and ensure there aren't any additional data fees," Apple spokesman, Bill Evans, told The Loop. "After updating to iPhone OS 3.1 the user should launch Safari, connect to a Wi-Fi network and charge their iPhone with the screen off. For most users this process should happen automatically when they charge their phone."

You wonder during this process it gets locked up??
