Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

For those suggesting to turn off fraud warning: that's a neat idea, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be a magic bullet for all. It was the first thing I tried, since it was a simple suggestion (and I did reboot after, and have several times since). It also doesn't fully make sense to me that this would be the problem anyway, since I never get these comas when the iPhone is plugged in to a wall charger, and several others have reported the same. Although technically fraud prevention could probably interact somehow with being on battery, this doesn't seem like an obvious kind of interaction...

The iPhone freeze is continuous when i activate push service for my mobileme account.
If push is disabled the freeze is rare.

Suspicion a problem to push service or mobileme services, when i disable "fraud warning" does not change nothing.

    @TempusThales:
Did that but no coma followed; actually never using 3G, Push and the top (power) switch gained me no following comas (IWFM)

I know this is not much considering the problem, but it seems that when my iphone locks up, the number of signal strength bars drops (i. e. 4 bars to 1 bar in a 4 bar zone). I use this as a notification to reboot my phone.

still no response from apple? it's getting a little ridiculous now, i get 'random' voicemails and a slew of text messages all at once from the phone going comatose like this! this is rather troublesome to know i can't rely on my phone to even receive phone calls.

This is completely ridiculous! My phone randomly turns off at least 3 times a day since the update. FIX IT ALREADY! I'm missing important calls

I'm also experiencing random shut downs (3G - 3.1)...sometimes as many as 2-3 per hour. It appears to go into "coma" mode with greater frequency as the battery power goes down (i.e. < 20% = more frequent).

Hopefully Apple releases something....soon...as I'm tired of trying to wake my phone up from a deep sleep.

Adding my name to the list of crashing iPhone 3G after the 3.1 update. Mine does not turn off by itself; it just won't get calls, voice messages or send text messages. Have to turn it off and on again to get it to work. Does appear random.

How do we FIND the solution when there are 64 pages of these messages? It says "helpful: 2" and "solved: 1" but how do you locate those?

Count me in. I've had it happen a few times a day. When it comes back on, I notice my phone has no connectivity and takes the time to reassociate with a tower, so I wouldn't doubt that my phone is "off" when it goes black.

Has anyone tried going back to 3.0.1? Just an idea...

Mine has been perfect after rolling back to 3.01 and setting it up as a new phone. I realize 3.1 is a POS, but I'm not sure why everyone is just complaining about it instead of rolling back to 3.01. If your phone worked fine before 3.1 like you all claim it did, ROLL BACK.

This has solved the problem for many people in this thread and several have posted links to videos on YouTube which walk you through the process very simply.

I just updated yesterday, and I've seen either the Mysterious random total shut down, or it WON'T shut down. Additionally, there are locations in some NING communities that I belong to that I have always been able to access, which now I cannot, while others, using their Mac or PC still can. So far, after turning 3G and wifi OFF, no "comas" since yesterday. I was having about 15 "comas" a day. Try that and please let me know if it works.
I know it is not the solution, but at least your iPhone will be ON until Apple fixes the issue.
