Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

It is difficult to find the responses within these pages that suggest solutions. Maybe a new thread needs to added. It seems rolling back to 3.01 has worked for some, turning off Fraud Warning in Safari has worked for others. The Wi-Fi issue has been reported since 3.0 update so I'm guessing that's not the new culprit with 3.1. For me, I turned off Notifications in the General Settings (just below Wi-Fi) and haven't had a crash in over a week. I also deleted a couple of Apps (AP Mobile and Sports Tap) that used notifications.

Ok, simple solution. i had the same problems last week after updating.

I got fed up with it.

call 02 or your sp and claim the sales of goods act under your consumer rights. I think they have been told to pretend not to know about the problem but stick to your guns.

got a new phone coming tomorrow!

    Dont give in to them

good luck, my friend. I've been to the apple store for a new iPhone 2 times... guess what? It's not a hardware issue... It is 3.1 update. That's the name of this forum.

Since I updated to 3.1 I had 2 random shutdowns so far. "It's not a bug, it's a feature!" is how Apple will put a spin on it.

Since upgrading to 3.x, my 3G has had battery life problems. In addition, I experienced a crash during standby. Never experienced this before.

I don't usually use Wifi. When the crash occurred, it was when Wifi was enabled. Any connections?

I have a iPhone 3G, no jailbreak, push email and calendar on.
The same problem here after updating to iPhone OS 3.1, never had problems with freezes before, so I guess it is a OS 3.1/software problem.
The last time it happened after leaving the subway, maybe it has something to do with iPhone leaving/joining the network (T-Mobile in my case).
I am going to turn "auto lock" off and test if is a workaround for me.

Update: after turning off WiFi for several days and using it only when I was at home on my wireless network, being diligent in turning WiFi off when done, I had no "coma mode" incidents until yesterday. I've not done anything different since my post on Sept 17th, but suddenly I am back to square one with a dead iphone that needs CPR at least twice a day. This is VERY bad as many know as this is a phone not just a PDA. I depend on it for work and many other things including waking me in the morning. It was serious enough that the total lack of response by Apple has me back looking at the Windows Mobile or Gphone offerings. Man, I love my iPhone but whatever happened to the motto "it just works" ? Hope there is a fix soon because I depend on this thing daily!

I have heard that some are trying to restore back to 3.01 but have not found out if they are successful. The longer this goes on the less this "former" Windows Mobile user thinks he's got a good thing. Again, this is not a PDA, it's a lifeline, it's a phone and more. We depend on this. Apple, fix this or at least acknowledge the issues which are obvious.

By the way, yes I know how buggy Windows Mobile updates were. I just never thought I would see the same issues when I switched. The length of this forum alone brings back memories of when they released upgrades for my Axim X50v.

    This is not good.

Registered to put in two cents as well. My iPhone 3G was perfectly fine before the 3.1 update. Since I've updated, it does the hang/coma thing various times during the day. I don't use push, and have turned off the fraud thing in Safari. Still having problems. I'm missing phone calls, and texts because the phone won't ring. I have to turn it off and back on to get it to work, then the texts or voicemails I missed will pop up. This is VERY frustrating. Get with the program Apple! My phone is useless because of this. I've also noticed that my battery meter is wacky sometimes as well. I had the phone on the charger all night, it showed as full while plugged in. I unplugged it, and it went down to half. Turned the phone off and on, then it acts normal. This is BS. Phone is almost always hung after a night on the charger. Its gotten to the point where I just turn it off and on when I wake up, and randomly during the day to ensure I'm getting my texts and calls. I shouldn't have to do this. I've advised all my friends with iPhones who HAVEN'T updated NOT to. My buddies with 3.0 on their phones are laughing at me. FIX THIS PROBLEM APPLE! I'm paying too much per month for these type of problems.

This is also happening to me. Ever since upgrading to 3.1, sometimes my phone goes back to sleep and won't wake up. When someone calls, they can hear ringing but my iphone does not ring and does not show the missed call.

I called Applecare and they had me restore the phone to factory settings and re-sync. I did that, and the problem was fixed for 3 days. Now the problem is back.

PLEASE FIX THIS APPLE!!! I am at the verge of getting another phone, I just can't affor to miss calls!!!

I am just another dealing with the phone's random black outs after 3.1 update. Made a genius bar appt. They just backed up and restarted. It took 3 hours!!! Anyway, problem NOT solved. Still blanking and now my mail won't "push". I have to go in manually to retrieve mail. Arrgh. Anyone hear of any fixes or aknowledgements from apple? Obviously, this is epidemic.
