Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I have experienced many the iPhone hangs. The unit comes back to life on it's own about 10 minutes or after a Hard Reset.

My guess is something related to Notifications since he hangs began after configuring the new EBay Notification feature.

I have EBay and AP Mobile sending notifications. Since removing AP Mobile I have had no more crashes. Could EBay and AP Mobile somehow be fighting each other?

I am adding a post on this thread to bump up the number of people with this problem.

iPhone "Coma" has become a common term now, and this issue is bigger than Swine Flu! A recent poll online indicated that 73% of users who upgraded are experiencing problems!

I would love to know why when this problem arose on the 10th of September I was still able to upgrade on the 17th and Apple still have the poisonous version of the OS on iTunes and encourage people to install it!!

It's FOOOKED!! Pull it of the net Apple!!!!!

I am having a new phone delivered tomorrow to see if there's a remote chance this fixes it, but if not I guess we will all have to put up with it until Apple stop drinking smoothies, notice there's a problem and get coding.

I urge any users reading this who have a problem to add a post saying "Me too" so Apple can see the extent of the damage they have caused!

Stand up and be counted people!!!!

Same problem, same phones. Actually happening on both mine and my partners. We both have 3gs. Only happening often enough to be annoying, every couple of days or so. I noticed today when mine "coma -ed" it ran the battery down. This does seem to be an enormous problem. Still watching for that update.

Updated to OS 3.1, and within the next few days, my phone also experienced a spontaneous shut down. Had to connect phone to my computer to get it restarted. The random shut down occurred again, today. This has never happened before the update. Hope there's a fix
    soon.

+1 for stupid iPhone lockup. It's occurred daily at least once for me. Hard reset is the only fix.

    ME TOO!

Went to the local Apple Store and they said they hadn't heard of ANY issues with the 3.1 update. I personally don't buy it...I worked in consumer electronics for 5 1/2 years and the blanket response for ANY software bug is "We here haven't noticed any issues"

Standard smoke screen until corporate can get a grip on what the **** happened. My iPhone has "coma'd" about 10 times in the last 2-3 days. UNacceptable.

When I called applecare they acknowledged the problem was a known issue with 3.1. They gave me a case number so I could go into the apple store and get a replacement no questions asked.

The hardest part was getting the apple store people to see me without an appointment. Worse than a doctor's office! I guess that's what happens when one store servers like a million people.

After suffering through "Coma Mode" for the last 3 weeks, I went to the Apple Store in Houston. I was advised to Restore as a new phone which I did last night. So far, so good. I will report back in a couple of days and let you know if it worked. What an irritating problem!

Oops, sorry, I listed my OS as 3.0.1. It is in fact 3.1.

Same problem here. since upgrading to 3.1, a couple of times per day my iPhone 3G 16GB goes unresponsive for several minutes. It might be logging keypressesI use when I try to wake it up because a few times it has immediately taken a screen shot as soon as it wakes up, and sometimes a song is playing. I tried a reset to factory and a restore from backup (wasn't ready to commit to reconfiguring all my settings) but that did not fix the problem. Hoping for a fix soon.

Same thing here with my 3g. Started happening soon after upgrading to 3.1. At first I noticed when I tried to wake my phone it would take screen shots by itself, now it just shuts down and will not wake until I reset my phone. I've had it happen to me on WiFi and 3g.

This mysterious unresponsiveness has been happening to me since 10-Sep, which I guess is the day I installed the new OS 3.1. I think I have to hard reset the phone about once a day now, and there is no way to tell if it is responsive or not. Very frustrating.

I think I might be suffering the batter life issue as I now notice I have to recharge at the end of each day, and I barely use it during the day for anything.

    Another "me too"

iPhone 3G, bought when they launched in July 2008. I've turned off push notifications but use Exchange push email, Wifi and Bluetooth.

I've noticed that when the phone is in Coma Mode, the Bluetooth and Signal Strength indicators on the car display disappear as if the phone is no longer paired.
