Q: Mysterious random total shut downs following 3.1 update

Ok, I updated lastnight without a hitch. But now I get random complete shut downs of the phone. It has happened twice. In both instances the phone has come back after doing a hard reboot. Anyone else having this problem?

On my soap box for a minute: EVERY OS update that apple has released for the 3g since I've owned it (other than the last 2.1XX update) has cause problems. The 3.01 update caused it to hang and slow down to a crawl despite two different restores and reinstallations of everything and now this. How hard can it be to write an OS for a maximum of 3 hardware configurations? Does apple actually test this stuff before it goes out? If the slogan is "It just works" well it just doesn't when it comes to apples ability to provide a functional OS for one of their premiere devices.

Iphone 3g, Windows Vista, itunes 9

I'm experiencing the same issues. For the record, I have the following:

    1. OS 3.1
    2. 3G 8GB

It took a week or so after the install of 3.1 for it to start entering Coma mode, but it now does it randomly once a day or so. I have also had it be otherwise responsive, but not accept calls or texts at all. Upon cycling the power, then all of my text, missed call, and voicemail indicators suddenly show up at once.

I can vouch for this too. iPhone coma has happened 3-4 times since 3.1.

I get the same problems and it's very annoying to find out that the iphone's battery depletes quickly as well. After a full charge, and after my iPhone freezes up/shut down, I would find the phone very hot and battery depleted in within a freaking hour! I'm also having problems with the bluetooth connection with my car. At times, the iphone bluetooth would intermittently connect and disconnect. At other times, after my iphone connects via bluetooth with my car after a minute or so, it disconnects and I would find the phone shut down or frozen screen.

Does Apple have a Quality Assurance and Quality Control their products before releasing any product?!

Apple products are quite expensive so why aren't they doing their job and making sure their products come out fine and fully tested before release?

The same thing happened (s) also.. but further more the screen blinks and acts like it wants to go to sleep at times. when I wake it delays then sometimes hangs up requiring a hard reset.

After experiencing this very problem upon upgrade to 3.1 and reading through the various posts to this thread I decided to call Apple just to see what they had to say. Level one support was very nice but quickly booted me to level 2. The tech pretty much told me the problem was software and the fix was to get a new phone. So, friends and neighbors, it appears the only fix, at least officially, is get a replacement phone. This option is fine if you are still under warranty or have Apple Care. Personally, I've already been down the new phone route and prefer to wait and see if they come out with a fix. But, at least they sort of admitted it was a software problem.

    For what it's worth.

i also am having the same problems on my iphone. I have a 16gb 3G and it worked fine up until I installed 3.1. I loved the 3.0 update and had not encountered any problems. I updated to 3.1 the day it went live and ever since my iPhone has been freezing and shutting down atleast 3-4 times daily and this morning it did it 5 times and every time it requires a hard reset but usually doesn’t come back on during a usual hard reset. I have to hold it some times for 20 seconds to get it to restart. 80% of the freezes have occurred when using safari or app and goes to sleep mode through auto lock. I have tried multiple resets and restores to no luck. Hopefully they will have an update soon!!

    ME too!
I have IPhone 3G. Since last weeks update, have experienced TONS of "coma's".

Went to Apple Store today in Louisville, KY. *Was told that the problems are INDEED DUE TO 3.1 update and an update to fix this "3.1.1" was to be released today!* I was also told that Apple had already released an update earlier today for their Itouch.

The tech guy explained to me how to take the 3.1 off and restore but ENSURED ME that with this update "3.1.1"- it WOULD NOT BE necessary.

Going on 10:30 here and no update. hmmmmmm

    Me too, ever since 3.1:

Random freezes while phone is locked/asleep. Often when nothing is running, just on the home screen. Happens about once a day, but I just had it happen twice in a few minutes.

Force reboot brings it back (for a time), BUT I also notice something interesting: if I try to wake it but it's frozen, and then I wait several minutes, it WILL often wake up... *but now BOTH the sleep and home buttons are non-functional: they take a screenshot.* Normally the two together would do that, but after a freeze (if I don't reboot), either one alone does. The phone is otherwise functional, but once I enter an app I can't get out, and I can't re-lock the phone, because neither button works. Rebooting brings things back to normal.

Anyone else see this screenshot issue? Try waiting a few minutes after a freeze--don't reboot, just see if it comes back awake... with both bottoms "reprogrammed" to take screenshots! (Then you still end up having to reboot to get those buttons working again.)

A full wipe and restore did not help (but it did lose ALL my stored passwords, for Safari and Mail alike). I was afraid it was the phone (it's a warranty swap about a week old) because my old phone didn't do this. But maybe it's 3.1. I'm afraid to roll back and risk corrupting my backup (never heard of that risk, it's just complexity I want to avoid).

3G, 16GB, WiFi and Push on, Bluetooth off.

I would suggest contacting Apple customer service. I did because I was experiencing the same problem and they were tremendously helpful.

Updated Sunday AM and found that since then, my phone has frozen at least 5-6 times in the last two days. This happens randomly after I manually lock AND let it time out and lock on its own. Today, I got the added bonus of only being able to take screenshots when attempting to get the stupid POS out of its frozen state. If it wasn't for the fact that the iPhone is the only phone that AT&T carries right now that even remotely catches my fancy, I would have gotten rid of this thing a long time ago. Apple seriously should have fully tested before issuing it out to the unassuming public. Currently, my opinion is that Apple blows.
